Oh! He was actually doing it! Okay okay, you can do this Claire. Be bold. Be brave. Be Cassie. She told herself as Stefan bent down. She smiled shyly, or was it slyly? Behind her scarf as she reached up now that he was closer. "I think you have something in your hair." She said, her brows furrowed a bit as stood up on her tiptoes to get a better look. She gently reached out with her mittened hand, touching his hair lightly and moved it sightly to try and get a better look, before she tucked the strands behind his ear.
"Can you turn your head that way?" She asked pointing to the side. She waited until he did so before adrenaline began to course through her veins. Alright, it was go time. It was time, alright you booger, you can do this! She thought to herself. "Hmmmm." Her brows furrowed together in confusion. Then, with lightning speed she was reaching up and pulling her scarf down before leaned forward, placing a quick kiss to his cheek. She then turned on her heel, and bolted. "Got it!" She called.
Oh goodness, oh sweet peas, oh for the love of fudge! Her heart was racing as she made a beeline for the castle as fast as her legs would carry her. Despite her short legs, Claire was quite quick. She didn't dare look behind her or else she might break again, and she'd broken enough that day. Cassie would be proud right? She'd done the thing! Kisses on the cheek weren't bad, right? That was fine. She faltered for a brief second. Cassie had said to use tongue. Should she have licked him?! That thought had her lose sight of what was in front of her and she tripped suddenly. Landing on the ground. "Fudging apples!" She cursed from the ground. She quickly got up, her arms outstretched at her sides. "I'M OKAY!" She yelled in case anyone had seen her trip and was coming to her aid. She continued to run towards then castle then, fully set on not stopping until she'd either keeled over from lack of breath or until she reached her room unless she was stopped.

While he should have felt ecstatic for this moment (and briefly he had), he instead felt horribly guilty and filled with sorrow. It wasn't that he regretted kissing her, that hadn't been why he pulled away from her. It was more because he knew he shouldn't have wanted this so badly. He respected her more than this. She had just lost her husband. And even though she had somewhat insinuated that she did not mourn for him, he still couldn't help but feel it was wrong for him to be kissing her, especially if she was in any sort of vulnerable state right now. The last thing he wanted was for her to think or feel that he was taking advantage of her, or the situation she was in.
He had spent so long trying to get over her after she had married Edward. His brothers bared witness to that part of his life and how bent out of shape he had gotten. It had taken him a while to move on, too. Every time he had seen the two together, he got a sick feeling in the pit of his stomach for a while. Until he had grown completely numb over it all. He had felt angry and then guilty for feeling angry when Eleesa had gotten pregnant with both boys. Those should have been his children. And when Edward completely started to disregard Eleesa and slept his way around the castle, those feelings of anger, sorrow, and how she should have been with him, had stirred up once again. He would have never treated her that way. She would not be so unhappy. Oh, how it killed him to see her unhappy.
He had never allowed himself to fully get over her. Not then, not now. If Eleesa would end up being forced to marry another, or worse yet, chosen someone else, he would not be able to handle that pain and loss again. So perhaps it was best not to allow himself to become too attached- too hopeful.
Triston noticed the tears welling up in her eyes, and how she turned away to hide them. It only left him more concerned and worried. Had he hurt her? Did she feel that he was using her or treating her as Edward had? Did she feel that he had taken advantage of her and she was too nice- too scared to say anything or stop him? Before he could say anything, apologize again, something she was walking away. Briskly. He frowned and hung his head for a brief moment. In shame. Embarrassment. Sorrow. Disappointment- but mostly in himself. Should he let her go? Should he follow her? He did not want to make matters worse, though he did not know which option would cause further damage.
Before he could talk himself out of it, he moved after her and caught up, grabbing hold of her arm. "Elees--" No, too informal. "Your majesty, wait." He stopped her and turned her to face him. "Please forgive me- I did not mean to offend or upset you... I-" He looked down at her before allowing his eyes to drop further to look at the ground. He shook his head in defeat, "You just lost a husband... I do not want you to think I am taking advantage..."
He should not have said that- now the idea was most certainly in her head. He lifted a hand to rub his face in frustration. "Can I at least walk you back?"

He wouldn't doubt if he had something in his hair. It wouldn't be the first or the last time, so he believed Claire. Ducking down low so she could reach the top of his head, except now she was telling him to turn his head, so he did. What he hadn't expected was for her to kiss his cheek, and then run.
He stood back up, watching her as she ran off, and he couldn't help but chuckle. She was adorable and he couldn't wipe the smile from his face as he continued walking on. He wouldn't go after her or stop her because he didn't want to risk making her more flustered or breaking her as she had put it. In truth, the woman was confusing as hell... with all her girl emotions, and he wasn't too sure how to act or be around her at this point. She had made it horribly awkward. Or maybe it was his fault as he should not have asked to kiss her. He did not think it would have caused as much of an issue. It was only a game, right?
Stefan eventually caught up to Aric and Alexandria, but he remained a distance behind them, to allow them their privacy, but close enough to act if they came in danger. Back on duty.

Alexandria laughed and gave an overly concerned look before reaching for his face and kissing his cheeks. "Oh, I am sorry my love. It's just the way of life... You cannot always be fairest of them all, my prince." She grinned and looked him in the eyes, her expression softening as did her grin. The queen looked at him admiringly and quickly brushed her lips against his. "I love you," she said in a more serious tone, finally dropping her sarcasm and joking manner.
She meant that with all of her heart. Aric had done so much for her and Aralore, it would be extremely difficult to not love the man- to not let him into her heart. They had helped and healed one another from their losses and heartache and proved to one another that it was possible to love again and to be happy.
She was quickly laughing again as Aric answered her question about his sense of adventure. "Oh... But you didn't seem to mind back in Aralore having my brother or my people looming about?" She grinned and playfully nudged him.
A loud laugh escaped her at Aric's comment of Claire needing to stand on a chair or ladder to kiss Stefan, and she was quick to cover her mouth to stop herself. The poor things. One extremely tall and the other extremely short. It was quite comical but adorable. She quietly watched them behind Aric's shoulder and noticed as Claire got Stefan to bend down. Alexandria laughed, "or she could just ask him to bend down..." She motioned to Aric and watched as it looked like Claire was trying to get something out of Stefan's hair. Suddenly, she was kissing his cheek and running off. Alexandria buried her face into Aric's shoulder and laughed. "Oh, dear..." She knew how Claire was and how embarrassed she had been about the booger incident with Stefan. It probably took the poor girl a lot of guts just to be able to do what she just did now.
She lifted her gaze again to see if Stefan went after her, but noticed he was laughing, shaking his head, and finding his way to walk behind them, resuming his duty. Alexandria smirked and looked back at Aric, "Stefan is a good man...I am happy to have him as my guard." Not to mention, the man had saved both of their lives now.

Now, suddenly, she wasn't talking much at all. Why did that make things feel even more awkward?
Shane wasn't very good at conversation to begin with, let alone with a lady who was very talkative. Not that he had entirely minded it, the sailor just figured he was appearing very dull and uninterested simply because he didn't know what to say half the time. He hadn't been lying when he made it clear he hadn't been to court in awhile or attended any such events. And there was a very obvious reason for it.
He waited for the inevitable, knowing she wasn't going to easily be able to walk on that ankle just yet. And attempting to do so might just make it worse, even if they were right there at the castle. She'd still have to walk back inside, and despite the fact that he didn't call himself a lord, Shane liked to think he was still a gentleman. Cringing slightly, he indeed caught her as she reached out for him, not letting her fall. At least he wasn't telling her I told you so.
A grin found his face again but kept himself from laughing, knowing that right now would not have been ideal. She was feeling horribly embarrassed and the last thing he wanted to do was make it worse, even if seeing this side of a lady was rather endearing to him. It made her seem real and not like many other ladies of the court who hid behind their false facades, wearing masks to make themselves appear better. Avalynn was innocent, kind, and truthful. She was resilient even when facing soft travesties such as this.
Remaining by Ava's side and making sure she remained upright, her words actually made him halt their walk so that he could regard her. Bright eyes slid over to her face and his brow furrowed; lips pursing with thought. "Why would I do that?" he asked in all seriousness. "Suffice to say, you're not so easily forgotten, Lady Avalynn." Shane seemed so matter of fact, as though his words were no big deal to say at all, gently urging them into a walk once more. The response could have been misconstrued for flirtation, perhaps, but the man was nothing if not honest right now.

Triston was calling to her, stopping himself from being too informal and that seemed to only break her heart further. It made her less inclined to do as he requested, afraid that the tears stinging at her eyes would begin to fall and there would be no hiding them. Eleesa only paused when he grabbed her, turning her around to face him and she was unable to meet his gaze. It felt childish but she knew she was crumbling quickly beneath this sudden weight and she didn't know how to keep herself upright.
"It's...fine, Lord deGrey," she replied after a quick moment, struggling to gather herself together. If he wanted to be formal all of a sudden, then fine. Eleesa was borderline upset and enraged, and her expression kept fluctuating to show it. He was trying to apologize, mentioning the death of her husband again and it was the absolute worst time to do so. If she wasn't so distraught already, she would have known what he meant by all of this. She would have been able to read through the lines, past his words and the look on his face and really understand...but she couldn't right now. All of this had suddenly drawn back that overwhelming doubt over herself and she was drowning in it.
If she wasn't careful, it might completely consume her again.
Finally, those watery blues settled upon his distraught face and she appeared hurt, in an almost angry kind of way. "Taking advantage?" she heard herself repeating as though she hadn't heard him correctly. "You think...that I would have allowed that, if-" Eleesa couldn't even finish that sentence while she was in sudden disbelief. Every word out of both their mouths was being misconstrued and making it impossible to recover from presently. All she heard right there, right now, was that she was weak. That she was a woman who would have allowed a man to get that close without a fight. It was one thing when it had been Edward, her king, but anyone else? She liked to think she was stronger than that.
Her throat was closing up and she felt a single tear fall to leave a warm trail down her cheek. "No," she whispered to his question because she knew her voice would crack. Eleesa was holding herself high but it was so horribly obvious that she was hurt and conflicted. "It is...probably best that we just...part ways here." Somehow, that hurt to say more than anything else. A hand rose, pressing the back of it against her mouth to suppress the sobs that were waiting to shake her entire form. "Please, excuse me." The dismissal was barely audible as she turned away again and ran back towards the castle.
Her heart, in pieces, was left there on the forest floor.

Shane was catching her again. Again. How could one lady be so clumsy in a matter of an hour or so? She was quite literally falling for him. He was handsome and kind which made this all the more embarrassing for her. It would be easier if he was cruel or just another pretentious or pompous ass. But Avalynn did not get that sense from him- especially as he still offered to walk her inside and stay with her, despite how annoyingly irritable she had probably been or become.
Despite wanting to get away from him and her embarrassment, she was thankful to have him by her side, allowing her to lean her weight against him so she did not have to put much of it down on her pained ankle. She had asked him to forget about her, and the moment the words left her lips, she wished she hadn't spoken them. What if he agreed? Surely they did not know one another so it shouldn't matter whether or not she'd ever see this man again. But there was that small bit of hope she felt. Shane seemed different and genuine. They had found one another today, and it had to be more than just chance. Right?
Shane stopped, which caught her a bit by surprise, causing her to stumble into him slightly. She wasn't prepared to stop. Avalynn blinked and stared at him as he regarded her and finally spoke, "Why would I do that?" She half expected sarcasm to filter into those words, but no, he spoke and looked at her with a seriousness that told her he wasn't joking. "you're not so easily forgotten," he added. Avalynn stared at him, her expression filled with bewilderment and maybe a bit of doubt. He rendered her speechless, and she couldn't think of anything to say, so she just laughed. He wasn't serious, was he?
He was already urging her along to walk once again, and his words played in her mind as they walked in what was probably an awkward filled silence. To most, it may have seemed that the conversation ended since she hadn't said anything in response. She had laughed at him as if he had told her a joke. But to Avalynn, his words kept repeating in her head, so when she finally spoke, it was as if he had just said what he had and she was responding now, "Oh, right...Who could forget a silly girl who fell out of a tree, not once, but twice?" She laughed nervously at herself and shook her head. Clearly that is what Shane meant. She was a foolish, young girl and that's why she wouldn't be forgotten. Not because she was beautiful or sweet or kind or funny, but because she was a babbling, clumsy fool. Why would he forget about her? Because she wasn't worth knowing, at least in her own mind.
"I'm sure the guys back at the ship would love to hear this story..." She said, in an almost accusatory tone. This would all become a big joke at her expense, she was sure.
They were within the castle now, and Avalynn wasn't sure if she should allow him to come with her to her room, or if she should flag someone else down to help her. Would it be deemed improper of her to allow him to bring her to her room? Strangely, though, there was no one around. Perhaps on their way, they would run into someone.
She sighed, leaning against him as she hobbled along down the hallway, motioning to the direction they needed to head in. It was becoming more of a struggle and she was getting sore and tired from trying to keep the weight off her foot as she walked. So she suddenly stopped and let go of him, moving to the wall to hold herself up. "I just... need a minute." She told him, too proud to tell him that she was struggling. On so many levels. Her room was suddenly feeling so far away, and she wanted to cry. She could feel her throat closing up on her and her eyes were beginning to sting. Avalynn did her best to push the emotions down and steady herself against the wall.
"Really, I think I should be fine to make it the rest of the way, you don't have to--" She really wasn't sure that she would, but at least she had the wall to help her along, and eventually, someone else- anyone else, would come along to help her the rest of the way.

It wasn't fine though. Nothing about this moment was fine. And he was seemingly making it worse the more he spoke and the more he apologized. He could tell the queen was growing angry and upset with him. The way she averted her gaze and struggled to hold back tears and speak.
Triston wasn't really sure what he had done wrong, aside from thinking that he had forced himself on her and taken advantage of her vulnerability. He hadn't meant to and he needed for her to know that. Only- she was offended by him thinking that he had and that he'd even think that she would allow him to. He stared at her, confusion on his face. It was not what he had tried to imply as he did not think her to be weak at all- hadn't he briefly argued with William about that not too long ago?
He sighed, rubbing his face again, at a loss for words. What else could he say to even try to remedy this moment? He wasn't even sure why Eleesa was so upset. In his mind, it couldn't possibly be that she had feelings for him, too, and that he had ruined their moment. Instead, he was the problem. He had asserted himself whether she wanted him to or not. And how dare he do so on the widowed queen. Triston had let his selfishness and hunger get the best of him and now he was ashamed and embarrassed for it. Maybe he should have asked her if he could kiss her instead of just going for it. Yes, that may have prevented all of this right now. Or if he had just kept his mouth shut about her claiming her prize of kissing him. They would be back at the castle now and may have had a pleasant conversation on their walk back.
Eleesa was turning him down to allow him to walk her back. She didn't want him near her now. And he couldn't even blame her. He didn't even want to be around himself right now. Maybe it was for the best that they parted ways now before he ruined things any further than he already had.
She excused herself and ran off before he could say anything else or respond to her. Triston watched, feeling his own heart had been ripped from his chest and was being dragged on the ground by her as she ran away from him. Again. She was so far from his reach, despite how close he had gotten to her. Twice now. Perhaps it just wasn't meant to be.
Once she was out of view, Triston sank down onto a nearby boulder and sighed, covering his face into his hands. Was he foolish for loving her so? For never letting go of her, after all of these years? Was it time to finally let go?

All he could do at this point was laugh at Alexandria's teasing words, and relish in the fact that she seemed to be in such good spirits despite everything else happening in the world, the unsureness of it all. Their time here, now that the funeral was over, was a good distraction and should be a decent reprieve before they headed back to Aralore...to inevitable war.
"Love you, too," he was quick to reply in return, all the joking drifting aside for that one, lingering moment. It was like his heart just swelled in his chest because those words didn't feel so strange and foreign anymore. He wasn't avoiding them or pretending the feeling didn't exist. They were both beyond that now, both accepting of it so freely and that they were meant to not be apart, but to be together. With whatever life through at them.
Then, the humor was just as quickly returning. Aric chuckled again, but he was trying to look annoyed. "Yes, well...lo and behold, your brother was doing things he shouldn't have as well. So." Oh yes, that whole thing. In all honesty, he didn't know what to make of it. He wasn't exactly angry at Cassandra- disappointed, maybe, but not angry. Sadly, he couldn't blame her, but where did that leave her now, being back in Tresteria? Was the affair over?
He wasn't going to ask.
But love was in the air, apparently. Or crushes, anyway. Alexandria's words were making it sound like her little handmaiden had a thing for the extremely tall guardsman. It was hard not to laugh at the idea of them together- so sue him. He glanced over his shoulder when his wife pointed out the pair, just in time to watch the embarrassing moment. Aric nearly stopped in surprise over it. "What...on earth...? Did that just happen?" Well, he was definitely laughing again. Sorry, Claire.
As Stefan decided to follow after them and not Claire, he shook his head in soft amusement, remembering the man's words from minutes ago. "He is, and good, because he's not going anywhere. Although...when we get back home, you should force him to take some time off." Before things got dangerous, of course, but Aric wasn't about to voice that. "He deserves it and doesn't think he should." His hand dropped down to her own as they were finally entering the warmth of the castle.

Shane would be an idiot to not admit that this was very...awkward. The funny thing was, it wasn't entirely Avalynn's fault- the sailor legit just didn't know how to properly act around people that weren't his crew, especially around lovely ladies of court. He was actually a little surprised he wasn't stumbling over himself, because he didn't really understand what the norm was anymore.
Despite her clumsiness, Avalynn had been one of the kindest souls he's ever met. She seemed to berate herself for things she really shouldn't, though. He admired her down-to-earth mentality, even if her mouth seemed to constantly be moving. At least she wasn't babbling about boring things or courtly gossip, and his lack of responses or short replies were simply because it was the way he was. Sometimes he even kept to himself when on the ship, it all just depended. It was perhaps why he was such good friends with Wesley- the man could talk if he really wanted to, and then Shane didn't have to.
They walked in that silence and he figured the matter would just be dropped. He couldn't tell if he had said the right thing or not, because her bewildered expression could have been for either thing. Yeah, this is why you don't socialize anymore, Sully, he told himself. He was just trying to be polite and respectful, and possibly just made a muck of things. Then, moments later, she was finally responding, and it was his turn to look confused.
He really did not know how to respond to that. Why did he let that fucking idiot friend of his talk him into doing this?
'I'm sure the guys back at the ship would love to hear this story...' Was that an accusation? It kept Shane silent and maybe he should have stopped but he didn't bother to until she decided that she needed a break. Even then, he wasn't sure what to say. He was still trying to figure out what he had done or said to offend her or give her reason to say such things. Frankly, he was growing a little annoyed by it, and by remaining silent it was only escalating said annoyance.
The silence lingered still, and he was of half a mind to leave her there since she claimed she could make it the rest of the way to her room. He doubted it, and he would most likely regret walking away if he did, but he probably should have anyway. However, call it brazenness or perhaps he was still trying to prove a point that he really didn't have to, Shane moved back over to her and scooped her right off her feet again. Stupid lass. She clearly wasn't fine, and she was insulting him while insulting herself.
Was this what women did? Was this normal?
"First off-" he said sternly but not harshly before she could think to argue. No, she wasn't going to get a chance to ramble on this time. It was his turn. "Stop acting like it's the end of the world. You fell out of a tree. Twice, sure, but shit happens. Last I looked, we're all human and we make mistakes." Oh, cursing in front of a lady wasn't proper, but Shane wasn't caring as he began to walk. And he would continue to just wander the halls carrying her until she indicated wherever her room was. He also didn't seem to care that people were clearly staring. It wasn't his problem.
"Secondly, don't twist my words, my lady. I meant what I said. If I wanted to mock you, I would have done so to your face. And thirdly-" They were walking passed a couple of women who were clearly eyeing them in suspicion so he shut his mouth for a moment until they were out of earshot. "You don't know me, so I will forgive you for your assumptions that I'd be pompous enough to talk of you as if you were a joke. I've laughed with you today, Avalynn. Not at you. There's a difference."
Alright, now he was done.

Avalynn had always been hard on herself. Maybe it was the pressure placed on her by her mother, to be the perfect lady, and always reprimanding her for her clumsy ways- that she would never find a husband if she did not slow down and focus on avoiding mistakes and be more graceful. Maybe it was her long legs that tripped her up, she wasn't certain, but she had always been this way. Worst of all, she had feared letting her father down. He was a good man and Avalynn had loved him dearly. The last thing she wanted was her father's disappointment in her. After he died and after her mother had sunk into a depression so deep that she was barely living, Avalynn felt more pressured to do her best, to be a positive figure for her younger brother- to ensure he had a good life and grew up to be a good man. These were things that she shouldn't have had to take on- but she had.
She tended to push men away, out of fear that her mother would be right- that no one would want her because she wasn't graceful and she spoke too much. It was easier to push them away before things got serious and she'd be hurt by the disappointment of things not working out.
Yet, this man, he wasn't being pushed away so easily. Instead, he was scooping her up into his arms again, causing her to shriek in surprise. Her mouth opened to protest against him, but he was speaking before she had a chance to, his stern voice causing her to pause and keep silent, maybe even shocked speechless, as she hadn't expected him to speak to her like that- he had been fairly silent this whole time.
Was it the end of the world? No, he was right. Most of the time, Avalynn did not recognize when or if she was overreacting over such things, mainly she did so to avoid others from doing it for her, for putting her down. If she put herself down, then they could not.
Last I looked, we're all human and we make mistakes. Avalynn stared at him, her eyes slightly widened. In all honestly, she wasn't sure anyone had ever uttered those words to her. Mistakes were bad, she wasn't supposed to make mistakes. And now, here this man was, telling her it was basically human nature to make mistakes, and he was excusing it. Her lips parted, "I-" Her voice cracked, unable to get her voice out. But he was already speaking again.
I meant what I said. He hadn't been mocking her? Why was it so difficult for her to believe? Yet, she could tell by his expression and tone in his voice, that he was telling the truth. He was admitting that he'd mock her to her face and she wondered if he really would. Everyone else did it behind one another's back. Was this man really so different? Then again, he didn't hang around the court as much as the other men she met.
Shane was right- perhaps it was unfair of her to make such assumptions without knowing him completely. He had been kind this whole time and he hadn't laughed at her. He could have easily teased and made jokes at her, but instead, he had only really laughed with her.
When he fell silent, Avalynn continued to stare at him, unsure of what to say and how to respond. He was absolutely right. About all of it. "I..." She hesitated, her voice cracking once again as she struggled to find words. "... You passed my room." Avalynn pointed to a door that wasn't too far away. She smirked only slightly and let out a silent laugh, closing her eyes in the process before reopening them, "But you're right and I'm sorry...I just-" She cut herself off and shook her head, not really wanting to get into trying to explain herself. After a moment of hesitation, she changed her train of thought regarding trying to explain why she was the way she was, "forget that people outside of court can be different from the pompous men who roam through these walls..."
She did not speak again until Shane placed her down just outside her room. "Thank you..." She said, her voice slightly filled with embarrassment. Not just from everything that had happened, or that she had to be carried, but more so because he had put her in her place and she felt bad for making assumptions about him.
Avalynn leaned against the door, her hand resting on the doorknob, but she didn't take her eyes off of him. "It was nice to meet you, Shane." She smiled gently and found herself hesitating yet again. A breath of a laugh escaped her nose and she grinned a bit more, "You were a good catch..." Her gaze fell to the floor for a moment, her hair falling to hide the light blush that rose to her cheeks. She was soon to lift her gaze though to look at him again, "thank you for catching me, though. Twice." Another breathy laugh passed through her lips and she shook her head. "I suppose you have proved your worth..." Avalynn recalled their banter from earlier on in the tree, when she had told him he should have to work for the kiss since he had made her work so hard to catch him. She had told him she wanted a kiss after all, but that it would be strange to do so with a stranger up in a tree. Shane had suggested they start by climbing down, and then this whole whirlwind of a mess that was Avalynn happened.
"If you still wish to allow me to claim my prize... Then again, as you stated... You caught me and maybe it's you who should be claiming some sort of prize." She was rambling again, nervously. Could he just say something to stop her before she continued to make a fool out of herself? Again.

Shane was no stranger to the pressure of parents. For him, it had gotten dangerous. It had gotten dangerous for his older sister and he could only pray that it didn't extend to his younger siblings. Sure, the trading company gave him the ability to leave Tresteria, but it also paid very well, thus giving his father what he wanted and expected, placating him for the time being. Not that Shane knew of Avalynn's own plight, nor did he have reason to voice his own. Yet, being out on the seas with the crew had certainly helped him forget what it was like to be constrained to court and to his home.
As he began to talk, perhaps more at once than he had since meeting her, he worried that he stepped too far. Avalynn was actually silent, although she tried to interrupt a couple of times. Once was to point out her room, he realized, and Sully was quick to stop and turn back around. It had only been a brief second of awkwardness, but he gently set her down and promptly took a step back to give her space. Just carrying her down the halls probably looked very wrong. Sometimes he forgot how to act when home- not that he was much different when on the ship, honestly.
Finally, she began to speak, and it seemed like his words had gotten through to her. Shane truly hadn't meant to berate, yet, perhaps she didn't take it in a negative way, as it hadn't been intended in that way to begin with. He just said things as they were, and she had been wrong to assume. And she was wrong about herself. She shouldn't be thinking such negative things. Then again, he didn't really know her, maybe he was just being extra polite.
He couldn't exactly judge people when he practically did the same thing with himself.
"Yes, sometimes they can be," he added in agreement about people outside court. But Shane also knew his fair share of horrid people outside these walls as well. Gently waving her thanks away, his crooked grin finally returned slightly. "It was nice meeting you as well, Avalynn." But her following words actually had him chuckling, a light bit of surprise painting his features. He was a "good catch". "Anytime," he told her, his head tilting a little bit as he regarded her. Of course he noticed the soft tinge of pink that touched her cheeks, and dare he think it was cute. Then, she was rambling again. He realized he wasn't saying anything now because this kind of rambling was cute as well, because she was embarrassed for different reasons.
So, he got to claim the kiss, huh? Well, he supposed their roles had sort of reversed, yet even still. All of a sudden, that teasing charm slowly began to return.
Shane took back that one step and moved closer, casually resting his arm against the wall as he faced her. "It is still your prize to claim, my lady." He leaned in just a little more, his voice dropping as though they were sharing secrets. "Take it, or name another price." Was that a glint of challenge in those bright eyes? Huh, that was surprising. Maybe he was encouraging her to take charge as she seemed so weighed down by the thoughts and orders of others.

Avalynn was thankful that Shane hadn't boasted or threw it back in her face that she was wrong when she clearly admitted that she was and even apologized for it. Most of the men she knew would have gloated over that, only making her feel more guilty or embarrassed about herself. Men were more superior than women were and any chance they could be reminded of that, Avalynn was certain they'd take it.
There were a lot of things that affected her and the way she thought about things. Oftentimes, Avalynn pushed her thoughts and emotions down, covering them with her cheerful demeanor and smiles. When she wasn't at home, she felt a little more freeing and able to be herself. It allowed her to be who she wished she could be and it prevented others from knowing that there was ever anything wrong or bothering her. Though every so often, those insecurities that surrounded her would seep out. Such as times like this one.
Yet Shane had dropped it and gone along with her as she changed the subject, not reminding her of her place or that she was inferior to him. Strangely, it reminded her that those insecurities were just that and that maybe Shane was different than the others. Avalynn could be herself and not worry too much about the judgment that may bestow her.
She watched as that crooked grin found his lips and he admitted that it was nice to meet her. Although she would have normally doubted that, she could tell he meant what he said. He had just berated her for not believing in what he said, and perhaps this man of so few words, only said what he meant to. Avalynn smiled, unable to prevent it from spreading-- that grin of his was far too contagious.
She had insinuated that she wanted to kiss him, as it was supposed to be her prize for capturing him. Shane had done so much for her in such a small amount of time, whether or not he knew that, she couldn't say. But she appreciated it for him and if kissing him was the best way to thank him, she'd not hesitate. He had proved his worth, indeed.
Her blue eyes remained on his as he moved closer to her again and leaned against the wall. For a moment, she had thought he was about to kiss her and she found herself holding her breath. Her cheeks were on fire, and although she wanted to look down at the ground and hide within herself, she couldn't bring herself to pry her gaze from his own. It wasn't until he leaned in closer to her and spoke, did she realize she had been holding her breath.
Take it, or name another price. He was challenging her. Again. And we all knew how things ended up at his last challenge to her. Avalynn grinned, her eyelashes fluttering slightly as she stared at him and drew in a staggered and nervous breath.
She closed up whatever distance remained between them, placing her hand on his chest before her fingers curled into the fabric of his shirt. It would appear that she was choosing to claim her kiss, only she stopped just inches from his lips and paused in hesitation. She only got to claim one prize, right? Was that what he was suggesting? A kiss or another price. Could it be anything? She thought during her moment of hesitation before the slightest grin formed on her lips. No, she couldn't kiss him. Not yet. That could very well be the end of this meeting. She would kiss him, Shane would go on his way, and she could never see him again. Maybe it would save her from whatever embarrassment she was capable of throwing herself into. But Avalynn kind of wanted to know more about this man.
She pulled back only slightly and her lips parted to say something, but she did not just yet. Bright blues searched his own before she finally did speak. "Will you attend the Yule ball with me?" Yes, that was the prize she wished to claim. More time with him. "You know... In case I need someone to catch me when I trip over my gown..." Avalynn grinned and watched his expression as she waited for his answer.

Married to Aric Demarais

It was nice to see that her husband's mood was already changing now that she was with him again and teasing him. What they had been through in the last couple of months had been a whirlwind of a mess. And while they had managed to find small moments of time to enjoy together, it was hardly enough to appreciate their newfound love for one another. Still, none of it had broken them and Alexandria liked to think that it was only making them stronger.
Aric had seen her in some of her darker moments, yet he was still there at her side. There wasn't much she could do to change things, but she could at least remain at his side during his own dark moments. And if she could manage to give him some light, she would try her best to shut away her own darkness to drag him back into the light with her. There was no use in dwelling on things when she had no control over it at the moment. And neither did Aric.
Her smile widened a bit as he returned her sentiment. How lucky they were to have been able to find love in their arranged marriage, and amongst all the chaos. Alexandria felt blessed and happy. Moments like this made her easily forget that there were other issues at hand, and she loved Aric for that.
At his mention of her brother, Alexandria couldn't help but roll her eyes, but she laughed and shook her head, "yes... Let's not get into that one..." She still wasn't sure how she felt about the whole thing between Orin and Cassandra. She expected Orin to be smarter than to get involved with someone who was not available. But she understood and it made it difficult to really be angry with both of them.
Thankful for the quick change of subject (at the expense of Stefan and Claire, unfortunately), Alexandria drew her bottom lip in as she watched, somewhat concerned but amused. "I think it did just happen..." She laughed softly and looked back to Aric as he insisted that Stefan was here to stay as her guard and that he deserved some time off. She nodded in agreement. "Of course. Does he feel that he cannot take time off?" Alexandria frowned lightly, it was never her intention to come across as demanding of anyone and she hoped she hadn't made Stefan feel that he was not allowed to take time off. She held her husband's hand as they entered the castle and walked quietly down the halls. They were passing by what appeared to be the ballroom where others were gathering for food and refreshments after the chase. Alexandria smiled and looked up at Aric. "I think I've had enough excitement and socialization for one day..." She pulled on his hand and continued down the hallway, giving him a deviant smile, "I think I'd like a better prize from my husband than just a kiss. Especially since he broke the rules." She grinned and led him to their room without allowing him time to protest, and shut the door behind them.

His father boasted. His father treated women and others that were inferior to him like bugs beneath his boots. Shane saw it firsthand, saw what he had done to his sister and how he reacted in the aftermath...and the sailor couldn't deal with it. He didn't want to be that kind of person which was why he was thankful for the crew of The Anne every single day. They gave him a job and opportunity while giving him a freedom he didn't think he'd ever be able to have otherwise. The thing was, though, he was afraid it the family duty would all fall upon Quinn, and Shane hadn't been able to figure out how to keep that from happening. Once Eamon O'Sullivan was completely fed up with his eldest son's "bullshit", he would move on to his other son.
So, yes, dear Avalynn, there were still people out there that weren't complete scumbags. Perhaps it was a rarity, but Shane liked to pride himself on his manners. His mother taught him respect where his father did not.
Yet, he wasn't thinking about any of this because he found soft amusement in the way her cheeks flushed. Maybe he was teasing her a little bit with his subtle movements, but he wasn't about to claim a prize that wasn't his. Not to mention, it was a silly tradition, and he should have known she wouldn't claim it either. Still, when she drifted that much closer with her hand resting against his chest, fingers curling into his shirt, Shane did believe she was about to give in.
His breath caught in his throat when she was only inches away and he could smell her perfume again. Out of instinct, those blue eyes dropped to her lips when she hesitated to watch the grin curl up the corners of her mouth. Knowing she had another idea before she spoke already had him slightly grinning in response. Then he heard her request and huffed out a gentle laugh; gaze studying her own as if he didn't believe her at first. 'You know...in case I need someone to catch me when I trip over my gown...' Well, he supposed he walked right into this one. He did say to choose another prize, but he didn't think he would be the best of company at such an event.
Shane's expression faltered just a little as he drew back a bit more. She might have noticed a flicker of unsureness in his eyes before it was gone. He couldn't very well say no, now could he? At least, from what he'd been able to see, the lady was pleasant enough and not like most gossiping women of court. What was one little event?
Lips pursed in thought as his eyes narrowed in light contemplation. "I suppose I can do that," he finally answered her, the crooked grin appearing once again. "You know...in case you trip over your gown." Shane chuckled lowly as he reached for one of her hands and placed a kiss to her white knuckles. "Then I shall see you tomorrow, Lady Avalynn." Ducking his head in farewell, the sailor took a couple backwards steps as he watched her before finally turning around to head back down the hall.
