- The second-born son to Eamon and Brona O'Sullivan and the eldest son, Shane's childhood had been a whirlwind of emotions. While his mother was caring and kind, his father was quite the opposite.
- At the age of eleven, he was witness to the "accidental death" of his own sister, Eithne, at the hands of his father. Shane had been riddled with guilt, having found out his sister was with child that was not of her betrothed's...and he was the one to inform his father of the ill news. He thought the man would understand and allow Eithne to be with the man she loved, but instead, Eamon was furious. Father and daughter argued where, it was ruled, that Eithne fell out of the manor window on the top floor. Shane blames himself and still has nightmares about it.
- Avoiding court as soon as he was old enough, Shane found himself at the docks where he met Elliot Walsh . The man helped him realize that there was a beauty with the sea and a purpose, and it wasn't long after that that he joined the merchant vessel, The Anne, as part of its crew. It gave him a job to support his family while his father slowly drinks himself to death.
- Shane considers Elliot to be a better father than Eamon and would do anything for him.
- Also upon joining, he met Wesley deGrey - the son of the man who started the whole company- and considers him his best friend.
- Shane is almost terrified of love because of what it had done to his sister.
- He has a decent singing voice, at least for shanties, but prefers to play the mandolin or hurdy-gurdy when the crew breaks out into song...which tends to happen a lot.
- Enjoys a good whiskey but is worried to drink too much because of his father's history with it. The last thing he wants is to become a drunk like him.
