[Scene Continued from The Past Comes Back to Haunt ]
[EOIN] He laughed at her. "You need to make a better bribe," he told her as he slowly got up to his feet. He didn't reply to her next comment, though, because in truth...he just wanted to keep busy. Eoin wasn't sure what tomorrow would bring and whether or not he would be of the right mind to return to this manor anytime soon. The least he could do was make sure this one task was finished. His grin returned when she mentioned haunting him. "It's a deal." He actually believed she would manage to haunt him, so he'd be sure to keep her safe. All she would have to do is sit there, really. Leaving the house after handing her a lantern, he was heading back towards that shed to gather some supplies. It would take a couple of trips, but he had the ladder over there and a small bag filled with whatever tools he may have needed, before slinging up a bundle of wood and thatch (freshly procured from earlier) and waited for her to head up the ladder first. That way she could light their way...and he could make sure she didn't stupidly fall. [d]
[NEMERIS] She followed him outside, throwing her shawl around her shoulders again before leaving. He hadn't asked for her help in retrieving all of the items from the shed, so she just stood there, holding onto the lantern to give him light. Once the ladder was placed and he instructed her to go up, she stood on the first rung and fixed her dress so she would not trip over it. She turned to him and narrowed her eyes. "You best not look up my dress, or look at my behind while I climb up this." She smirked and carefully climbed up the ladder with the lantern. Once she was up, she found a stable, flat spot on the roof and sat, waiting for him to make his way up. Her grey-blue eyes glanced around at the horizon and sky. It was getting darker, especially with the storm slowly approaching. [d]
[EOIN] "What kind of a man do you take me for?" he said in mock offense, waiting for her to ascend. He waited a little before climbing up after her. At the top, he spoke up again, "Watch your step." He was following behind her still, his free arm hovering near her back just in case while they walked to the hole in the roof. He dropped the bundle of supplies and began to untie it. " You can sit right over there. It's safer." He gestured towards the other side of that hole. "What even made this damage anyway?" he inquired while he set some of the wood down, adjusting it over the gap. [d]
[NEMERIS] "A man." She replied simply. They were all mostly the same weren't they? She remembered the look on the merchant's face when he had overheard her say she should accept someone's coins for her to join them in bed because she had needs too. It had probably been close to a year and a half now for her.
She moved to where Eoin told her to sit and she did, drawing her knees up and planted her feet firmly against the roof. At his question, she thought for a moment. A lot of things had happened around here, so she tried to remember what it was that brought this doom to her roof. "I think that was from a tree falling during a storm..." Fortunately, that tree had made excellent firewood after. [d]
[EOIN] He should be offended by that, but he supposed, in ways, she was correct. Still, he refrained from being less than gentlemanly, even if he was tempted to make a joking comment. He was beginning to hammer the pieces of wood in place when she explained it had been a tree to do the damage. "You're fortunate it hadn't been worse." It could've done a lot more damage if it had been any heavier. But hopefully these makeshift beams he was adding to the exposed rooftop would help keep it secure. Eoin paused briefly in his work, reaching over to lift her hand up that was holding the lamp a bit more. He'd like to not slam his finger with the hammer. "Now, this isn't going to look as pretty as the rest of your fancy roof...but it'll keep the rain out," he explained. He could build basic huts and small lodges...but that was it. Very basic, and using whatever the forest provided. [d]
[NEMERIS] She knew she had gotten lucky regarding the small amount of damage her roof had received from the fallen tree. But she didn't respond with anything more than a nod of agreement. She raised the lantern as he urged her hand up. "Sorry," she muttered. Though at his next comment, she raised a brow and looked at him with a puzzled expression. "Do you think I am some kind of spoiled, ungrateful noble woman?" He had continued to imply it throughout the day--giving her a hard time about not having servants to do things for her and now thinking that she would be bothered by how her roof looked? She couldn't care less. [d]
[EOIN] At her reaction to something that wasn't meant to be cynical, he halted the hammer midway in the air to flicker those gray eyes to her. "No," he said quickly. "Just commenting on the craftsmanship of this manor, and my fix is shoddy at best." It would stand out like a sore thumb, whether it bothered her or not. It had been simple conversation, nothing more but he promptly closed his mouth afterwards. After nailing down a couple of those pieces of wood to seal the gap, he was retrieving the thatch to begin tying it in small batches. This would patch up the rest of it and plug any holes. She'd probably want to bring someone out to properly fix it...were it him, anyway. [d]
[NEMERIS] As he answered her, she suddenly felt foolish for jumping to conclusions. "Oh..." She responded, laughing slightly. "It's better than a big gaping hole...Or collapsed roof..." She shrugged her shoulders, switching the lantern into her other hand so she could relax her other arm. There was a light rumble of thunder in the distance, and her grey-blue eyes shifted up to the sky, watching the clouds as they were quickly approaching. "How much longer do you think this will take you? The storm is almost here..." She warned him lightly. [d]
[EOIN] "That it is," he commented with a smirk. He actually wondered if there was any major damage done to the inside. He didn't think to ask or check about it. At the sound of thunder, his gaze drifted upwards. Well, so much for seeing the stars tonight. "Shouldn't take much longer..." Hopefully. He was securing the thatch to the wood now, filling in every crevice and gap that he could see. Of course, just when he was near finish, the sky decided to open up and begin raining. And not lightly, mind you. It started off with a couple of droplets before it was full out downpour. "Well...fuck," he murmured. [d]
[NEMERIS] She nodded in response as he assured her it shouldn't take much longer. She held that lantern up higher for him, as if her shining the light better would help him speed up with finishing. But her eyes remained on the sky, until she felt those droplets of rain, and before she could say anything, the sky opened up and dumped on them. She screamed and covered her head with her hands, dropping the lantern as it had already burnt out, anyway. But it was no use, she was already soaked and nothing was going to prevent it. "Eoin!" She yelled out through the loud rain, as if he could do something about it to make it stop. She looked over at him, squinting to see him through the rain, and she just started laughing, because, what the hell else was she supposed to do? [d]
[EOIN] Talk about bad luck. Nearly done, fingers nimbly trying to tie down the rest of the thatch, he became soak to the bone almost immediately. It was like the heavens were testing him, teasing him...torturing him. The light was gone and he heard it roll down the roof and shatter somewhere down below, and Nemeris was panicking. It was dark up there, but he could still make out her face when he heard that laughter. All he could do was laugh as well, completely exasperated at this point. What else could go wrong? Maybe he shouldn't have thought that...because they still needed to make it down without breaking their necks, and it might prove challenging in the dark and the heavy rain. "Watch your step," he heard himself saying again, calling loudly over the storm as he reached for her hand. Carefully leading her over to that ladder, he would begin to ascend first, but waited to ensure that she would be okay. He'd stay close, and they would have to take each step carefully and slowly. [d]
[NEMERIS] She found his hand and gripped onto it tightly, slowly standing and carefully walking back to the edge of the room. Her clothes were heavy and dragging now and she could barely see where she was going because the rain was falling so hard and making it difficult to keep her eyes opened. As she was nearing the ladder, though, her foot caught part of her dress, and the roof, now slippery from the rain, caused her to fall and slide down the roof and over the edge. One hand hooked onto the edge of the roof, her other hand had still been holding onto his. She screamed out in panic, but she was trying not to panic. Her grip wasn't strong on the roof, and with the rain, her hand would start to slip. [d]
[EOIN] And the bad luck seemed to continue. Was it just following these two everywhere now? Plaguing them each with different problems? This one was immediately involving the both of them. Just as he was about to step down to the first rung on that ladder, he felt her slip, nearly taking him with her. A gasp of panic, he leaned back against the slant of the roof as she was starting to slip. "I've got you!" he called over the rain...which was making everything extremely difficult. He knew her grip would slip, maybe even their own hands. Praying his feet wouldn't, he gripped her wrist with his other and began to slowly pull her back up to the roof with him. [d]
[NEMERIS] Bad luck, indeed. Maybe it was the negative energy they both had surrounding them, and together, it just lead to disaster. While her fingers were slipping from the edge of the roof, she felt Eoin's grip around her wrist tighten as he tried pulling her back onto the roof. With her other hand, she tried to strengthen her grip, to help pull herself up, but she couldn't seem to get a good enough grip because of the rain. She really was going to fall to her death and have to haunt Eoin, just as she threatened. She yelled up at him, so that her voice could be heard through the rain. "I can't hold on..." And before she could say or do anything else, her hand slipped from the edge, leaving her hanging only by Eoin's grip. She tried to grab hold of the ladder with one of her legs, but even that was too far out of her reach. Strangely, though, Nemeris wasn't panicking. She was calm and trying to help him with attempting to grasp onto anything to pull herself back up so he wouldn't be holding all of her weight. [d]
[EOIN] Well, he was panicking. Her life was in his very hands at the moment...and he had been the one to invite her up there with him. Granted, he didn't expected it to rain so suddenly, but even still. A curse flew passed his lips when her hand slipped and it pulled him just a few more inches closer to the edge of the roof. Leaning back and leveraging with his knees, he carefully let go of her wrist (still holding tight to her hand still), he reached out for her other hand. "Come on, Nem...reach up!" When he could curl his fingers around that hand, he used all the strength he had left in his arms to begin pulling her up. Rain soaked through his clothes, ran down his face and half blinding him, but he growled in frustration to pull her back up onto that room; falling back against it and yanking with him. [d]
[NEMERIS] Part of her just wanted to let go, fall, and be done with this life. Perhaps that's why she wasn't panicking. But Eoin wasn't giving up. When he offered her his other hand, she grabbed hold of it and he was pulling her back up onto the roof and right on top of him as he fell against it. Her breathing was heavy and labored, her hair and clothing soaked and clinging to her. She couldn't bring herself to lift herself off of him just yet, because she was afraid she'd fall again if she moved the wrong way. "Thank you..." She said breathlessly. She slowly lifted herself up off of him, still hovering though, and she looked down at him. "Sorry..." She suddenly said. For slipping, for making him have to save her, for falling on him. For living? She turned her head to look behind her so she could see where she was on the roof, and she moved off of him and beside him, sitting down first, so she could let him get up and head down the ladder first. [d]
[EOIN] Nemeris didn't weigh a terrible lot, but it still nearly knocked the wind out of him as his back hit the roof, then she was making it a little worse. A cough, he was squinting against the rain that pelted his face mercilessly, and he fought to find his breath. Unable to talk easily just yet, he nodded at her thanks. He was still gripping her hands, now crushed between them, and a part of him was afraid to move. There was no saying how long this storm would last, and it was getting cold really fast. They would have to make an attempt to get down soon. She was apologizing and then finally shifting off of him...and all he could seem to do was laugh. And laugh lightly. "That was a bad idea," he admitted, sitting up slowly. "You weren't made for manual labor." Which really wasn't a slight against her. He had simply wanted company, and despite his amusement, he was feeling guilty about it. Eoin carefully shifted down closer to the edge of the roof to find the ladder. "I'm going to climb down a little and wait for you." He had to yell a bit over the storm. "Take it slow. Take your time, alright?" Nodding to her to affirm this again, he'd begin to slowly lower himself onto the ladder where he would look up to wait for her. [d]
[NEMERIS] Her brows furrowed and she narrowed her eyes at him when he sad she was not made for manual labor. Rude But he was right, and she started to laugh and then she shook her head. "It was a bad idea...and I told you that from the beginning." She laughed again before she followed him to the ladder, carefully ascending down the ladder until she was firmly on the ground. She looked at him, as soaked as he was, she was no better. Another laugh escaped her as she held her hands out in defeat over this damn rain. "Let's go in before we freeze to death..." She yelled out to him, her voice nearly lost in the loud downpour. [d]
[EOIN] He wasn't built for many things either, apparently, and may have argued that if she had truly been offended. But his laughter kept up as she, too, managed to find the amusement in this horrible situation. "Yeah, yeah..." he muttered at it being his idea. And it could have been a disastrous one. His feet planted first to the now muddy ground, and he was reaching up to help her down the rest of the way. "This...is karma," he finally said in annoyance. For what, well, he wasn't entirely sure, but...come on now. This was so undeserving! Turning, he was ushering her inside as the rain was clearly not letting up. "Which room was it above?" He was asking her this as he tossed the soaked cloak aside by the door, already heading upstairs. Well, this would certainly be a test, wouldn't it? [d]
[EOIN] He laughed at her. "You need to make a better bribe," he told her as he slowly got up to his feet. He didn't reply to her next comment, though, because in truth...he just wanted to keep busy.
