NEMERIS' PAST ..
Nemeris stood in the shadows of her older brother's room. He and her husband had been acting so strange lately. Her father had just been killed and no one in the kingdom knew how it had happened. A lot of the people were looking at her wrongfully, thinking that she had planned the death of the king so that she would be appointed queen and her husband, the new king. It was decided by her father that her husband, Nicholas, should be the one to take over the kingdom once he was gone. She knew James, her brother, had been jealous of this decision. She did not blame him either; he was next in line for the throne. She secretly knew that the real reason for her father's decision was because he did not believe his oldest son would ever be capable of ruling a kingdom.
"Now that he is gone, you will be named king, and my sister queen. You must act immediately. Send the army off to Caestis and have them attack. We will become more powerful, it's the only way."
"But James, your father would not have wanted that. He ran this kingdom in peace. I have no intentions of changing that."
James laughed and shook his head. "You are foolish, Nicholas. Did not we agree to kill my father so that you could step up and take over and show this country how a real kingdom should run? Those were your own words, I believe."
Nemeris froze. Eyes narrowed as she peered out of the shadow and to the two men that stood talking. Both her brother and her own husband had become traitors. Her blood boiled with hatred now. She and her father were very close. She was the only woman that he trusted, even over his own wife he chose to speak to Nemeris instead. Just then, the door opened. She moved further into the shadows, remaining unnoticed. It was her mother. She wore a wicked grin upon her lips.
"My boys...Well done... No one suspects the death was on your hands. They already blame his witch of a daughter because of her ways." Her hand lifted to her son-in-law's shoulder. "I am sorry you must put up with her as you do."
Nicholas grinned and shrugged his shoulders. "I have her tamed by now."
"Well, it just so happens she is searching for you. You should go to her."
Nicholas turned to look at James who nodded, agreeing with his mother. "Go on. . . We will discuss more of the matters later."
"Alright. Goodnight." Nemeris watched quietly as he turned on his heels and moved out the door not noticing her. She clenched her teeth together, angry before her eyes returned to her mother and brother. They were silent until the door slipped shut.
"That man is going to ruin everything! He does not wish to go to Caestis!" She saw her brother begin to pace in front of the window. Her mother's voice was soothing and calming.
"My son, calm down. Be patient. Listen to me, child... We have succeeded in our first task. The king is gone, I am free and now we must take action to make this kingdom yours. He was wrong for choosing someone outside of our blood to take over, just because he favors dear Nemeris over you." She let out a quickened sound of disgust before she continued. "But her husband is weak, you know. He believes everything that is fed to him. He believes you are already on his side. It will be easy to stab him in the back and point the blame on Nemeris once again."
"But mother, why would Nemeris be to blame? Everyone would know that if she kills him she will no longer be in power."
"Oh, but she will. . . She will be a queen ruler with no husband." A grin formed upon her lips "At least until her son is old enough to rule, or unless she dies. If she dies, and her son is not old enough, it will be you who takes her place. Do you not think we could blame her for wanting to take over the kingdom herself and rule it all her way without a husband in the way? She is evil. She will ruin everything if she gets to the throne."
James grinned and nodded. "Mother, I love your thinking. . ." He stopped in front of her and placed his hands upon her shoulders as he looked into her eyes. "This kingdom will be mine. . . Ours. I will slip some poison in his drink and we will be rid of him. My sister, I will work on. Have faith, mother. It will all be done with. Our kingdom will become powerful as it should already be." He kissed her cheek. "You should rest. Surely your mourning for father has been keeping you up at night."
She felt betrayed. Her own blood. They were throwing her into a greater darkness that she had ever seen before. Quietly, Nemeris moved through the dark shadows of the castle before slipping into her son's room. He was peacefully asleep in his bed. She moved to lay down beside him and stared at him as he slept. Fingers delicately brushed through his light hair. She whispered quietly. "My son. Wake up."
His eyelids flickered open and he looked to his mother confused. Nemeris grinned and spoke quietly. "My son... I have another lesson to teach you." She rested her elbow against the bed and leaned her head against the palm of her hand as she lied on her side. She watched as Christian sat up with tired eyes and looked to her, ready to learn. He was still young. Seven years old now and very intelligent for his age.
"You must. . . Trust only those who love you. Even then, you must be careful. It is hard to tell who really loves you and who does not. Your grandfather, for instance. He loved you with all of his heart. He would have protected you for all of his life."
"Mother? Is it true what they say?"
Her eyebrows furrowed curiously and she shook her head. "What have you heard, son?"
"They say you were the one who killed him in his sleep. Is that true?'
Nemeris smiled weakly and shook her head. "As I was saying. You cannot trust those who do not give you love. People cannot be trusted all the time. They make up lies to hurt others. They live for power and for greed, none of which you should never possess my Christian." She lifted a hand to brush away a strand of his hair. "I loved your grandfather just as I love you. I am so saddened of his death. Do you honestly think I would do such a thing?"
He fell silently before he shook his head. Nemeris smiled again and pulled him closer to her, wrapping her arms around him. "Mmm. My dear boy...You must be careful with the words you choose to listen to. People spread lies and insults at one another. You must trust only your heart." She placed her hand over his chest where his heart was and she smiled softly, brushing her lips against the top of his head. "One day you will be king, and you will have many men who will lie and dishonor you behind your back because they want the power you will have. You must trust no one but who your heart tells you to. Do you understand, Christian?"
He nodded his head silently.
"Good. Never forget this. I will never let anything bad happen to you. Trust that. You are my son, and I love you." She smiled and kissed his forehead before she gently nudged him to lay back down. "I will sing to you, it is time for sleep." She watched as he closed his eyes again. Her free hand moved to pull his blankets over him and she began to sing to him softly, watching as he fell asleep.
"Look at how she does not mourn for her husband! It is because she wanted him dead! She wanted the power of ruling this kingdom alone! She is a traitor! She has killed the old king and now her own husband. Is this the kind of ruler you want in Saryndale?" Her brother gripped her wrist tightly as he stood upon the balcony of the castle shouting at the people below. She wore no expression and said nothing.
He continued to yell. "She will not be the queen of this land. She will be burned at the stake for what she has done!" The people below cheered loudly and began shouting chants of her death. Nemeris' eyes narrowed. She turned to get a glance at her son behind her in the distance. He was crying fiercely. She pulled her arm out of her brother's grasp and rushed to her son, kneeling before him. "Christian. What your uncle says is a lie. He does not love me, or you, or his people. Do not believe what he says."
Christian pulled away from her and yelled at her between tears. "I love my uncle! You told me to trust those I love. And I hate you. You killed my father, I hate you. I hate you!"
Nemeris watched as he pulled away from her and ran out of the room. She remained crouched down upon her knees, frozen. Her brother stepped up behind her and laughed.
"You crazed woman... Look at what you have done. You've ruined everything. Can you blame him for hating you?"
Nemeris slowly stood and turned to her brother. She glared at him with a darkened stare. "By all the gods, you are cursed, dear brother." She moved closer to him and spit into his face. He growled angrily and reached out, grabbing her neck within his hand. He pulled her closer to her and yelled into her face. "Do not place your curses upon me, you deviled witch!"
Her hands reached up to grip around the wrist of his hand that wrapped around her neck and she spoke, pulling his hand away. "I know everything. I know what you have done. It was you and Nicholas that killed father... It was you that killed Nicholas."
He raised his other hand and slapped her hard against the side of her face. "Cursed lies! How dare you accuse me of such things."
She stumbled back after the blow and lifted her hand to immediately rub at the stinging sensation upon her cheek. Sea-green eyes lifted to once again narrow at her brother. "I have not accused you of anything. It is the truth! You were always jealous father loved me more. He never believed you could rule a kingdom on your own." She grinned and let out a wicked laugh. She knew her brother was always intimidated by her. "You execute me, and I will swear by all the gods I will come back and haunt you and curse you for the rest of your life." She folded her arms over her chest and glared at him harshly.
He fell silent and considered her words, knowing very well that she was capable of ruining his life if she so wanted to. He growled loudly and shook his head. "Exile. You are exiled from this land. If you ever return, I will kill you myself. Leave."
Nemeris laughed at him again. "I would rather die than to see you rule this land and ruin everything father has worked for. I will leave by sundown with my son."
"Christian stays here."
She looked at him, eyes narrowed more. "He is my son, not yours. He will go with his mother."
James shook his head. "If he leaves with you, I will send out guards to find you and he will be slain right in front of you. He stays here. He will not go with his mother anyway, he hates you, now. I will see to it that he grows up hating you more."
Nemeris turned and walked out of the room. It was the last time she saw her brother.
Quickened footsteps carried her to her son's room once again. She opened the door without knocking and found him lying on his bed crying into his pillows. She shut the door and spoke harshly. "I did not kill your father! Your uncle did."
Christian lifted his head, tears staining down his face. "Get out! I hate you!"
"You have already said that. Are you done your childish fit now?" She folded her arms over her chest and raised a brow as she leaned against his door. "We are leaving. Get your things."
"No! I will never go anywhere with you. Everything you have ever said to me was a lie! Uncle told me you killed grandfather too. He said he saw you do it."
Nemeris shook her head and rolled her eyes. "He wants this kingdom for himself."
"No, mother. You want this kingdom for yourself!"
She sighed and moved closer to him. "Christian. Understand how your uncle thinks. Your grandfather chose your father to be king instead of him. He has let his jealousy run wild, and it has come to this."
"Get out, mother! Leave! I don't wish to see you again. You teach me wrong things. You tell me not to trust anyone but yourself when you are the liar! You are the one that cannot be trusted!"
"That is enough!" Nemeris raised her voice at him and shook her head. "We are leaving now, whether you like it or not." She moved and grabbed his arm, pulling him off of the bed. "Get your things."
Christian started to scream loudly. "No! I won't go with you! I want to stay here with uncle! You are a murderer! I hate you!"
At his screams, the doors opened wide and the guards moved to pull Nemeris away. "You heard the orders of the new king. You leave without your son." They pulled her out of the room. It was then that Nemeris finally poured all of her emotions out, realizing that this was actually happening. She struggled against their grip and screamed and began to cry out to her son, attempting one last time to get him to believe her. But he turned his back on her and ignored her cries. The doors were shut and she knew her son was lost from her.
She lived in silence, in darkness, in solitude. Trusting no one, clothed in black as if she lived as a dark shadow. She found her faith in her abilities, her secrets, and in the animals she now only trusted. She allowed her strength to grow as she became bitter and cold, vowing to never let another into her life. She was alone and determined to get back to her son one day.

MORE ABOUT NEMERIS ..
- Upon arriving in Aralore, she quickly befriended Alexandria Eveleigh- Demarais and became one of her most trusted advisers. For the first time in a long time, Nemeris felt like she belonged somewhere and that her gift was accepted and used for good.
- She fell in love with a man named Brennus, who did not completely love her back. He was in love with the queen but could not have her, so he settled on Nemeris. The two constantly fought over everything and it was quite an abusive relationship, mainly verbally. Brennus had gotten her pregnant but then later died just before the war in Aralore.
- When bandits attacked the island after the war, her manor was broken into and she was attacked. This caused her to miscarry and lose Brennus and her baby. Both deaths caused her to completely spiral into a dark loneliness and she barely left her home afterwards, for a long time.
- She warned queen Alexandria not to get involved in the marriage arrangement with Aric, asking her what would she had done if Eoin had not died in the war.
- Though she did not have a vision of Eoin Rodain being alive, it ended up that he was, and he returned to Aralore a year after the war, too late to save his relationship with the queen.
- She took Eoin into her home and soon realized that he was probably her only friend now.
- If she touches someone, she can pick up on their emotions and feelings, sometimes feeling those emotions herself. When she has a vision, she typically experiences what happens in the vision, physically.
- She wants to go back to her homeland to get her son back, but she is horribly afraid that he will be killed (as her brother promised he would be), or that her son would want nothing to do with her.
- Nemeris secretly wants to be a better person, but fears judgement and rejection.
- She can be quite the seductress. There is an alluring presence about her, and her eyes typically pierce through one's soul.
