Dove didn't often go out on her own; her brother Trout was always at her side when she ventured out into the city. He liked to make sure that he could act as her interpreter when needed, and that she wouldn't get run down by any carts or carriages. Today, though, he had errands to run getting supplies for his students, so he'd left Dove unattended in the book store. She was perfectly content to wander on her own while he did his other shopping. After all, books were a thing of beauty to Dove: thousands of words, stories and songs, that weren't hidden from her.
She moved up and down the aisles slowly, trailing her thin fingers along the spines of the sections she passed. Finally she settled into a section of quests and other chivalric things and plucked down a book called Tristan and Isolde to skim through. She decided it seemed a little melodramatic, and tried to put it back on the high shelf it had come from, but she couldn't quite reach. She pushed up onto her tiptoes and tried to slide the book into place, but the ones on either side had tipped into its space, and it just refused to go on the shelf. She glanced around to make sure the shopkeeper wouldn't see her, then used the lower shelf as a toe hold to boost herself up so she could reach. Proudly, she was able to maneuver the book into place, and she hopped back down from the shelf.
As she did so, however, her back foot caught on her skirt, sending her tumbling onto her rear. Her head and shoulders collided with the shelf behind her and sent a heavy vibration up through the shelf. The movement knocked forth a hail of books, and Dove barely had time to put her hands over her head as two dozen heavy volumes of mythology fell around her causing an impact she could actually feel through the floor around her. Luckily only a few actually hit her, but it still left her dazed and somewhat afraid to move for fear of shaking more books loose.
