Lucian listened to the remainder of Marinette's story. It was a beautiful story and she told it so well. He had forgotten where he was as she had pulled him away and into the story. He continued to hang onto every word, not really paying attention to anything else.
When she finished, he stretched his limbs out in front of him and had a confused, perplexed expression on his face, followed by a saddened one. "So she only got to see her family once a year? Because she stayed tiny for the rest of the time?" He knew it was just a story. "Was she happy?" He kind of wanted more of the story and the afterlife of it.
Olivia was asking for the story to be read again and that she enjoyed the happy ending and he realized that he may have been potentially crushing that, so he answered his own question, "Oh--well, of course, she was happy-she found love and became queen and all the dolls loved her and were her new family away from home." He smiled. "That was a lovely story. Thank you for sharing and reading it to us."

Triston had never managed to get close enough to anyone that may have resulted in marriage, unfortunately. His only family was his brothers, Olivia, and their mother. There had once been that hope, but that hadn't gone the way he had wished. It had left him heartbroken and hesitant to allow anyone else in. Although he was a charming and pleasant man, he kept himself closed off, and he never really knew why. He had loved Eleesa and he was afraid of that same rejection and the pain it had caused him.
Although he was grateful to have his brothers, he still felt that missing piece of him.
At William's mention that they were missing one, he turned his gaze around the room. Wesley wasn't around. Neither was Helene. He grinned and shook his head. Hopefully, Helene wasn't repeating all the stories they had just told her.
He smirked at Lucian's question and was about to answer it, but his younger brother was quick to correct himself to avoid upsetting Olivia's hopes and dreams. "Or maybe she did get to visit more frequently, they just didn't write that in the story." He smiled at Marinette, "Thank you. Happy Yule."

Helene lead the way down the stairs and gave one more look at Wesley over her shoulder while she wrestled those kittens before she went to stand in the doorway of the sitting room. "Well....I'ts not a pony, but...." The smile on Helene's face was a bit sheepish. She was excited to see Olivia's little face at seeing the kittens, and she was already shooting a glance at William. "We have one more present for you Olivia." She said to the little girl, grinning at her as she walked in with the kittens.
Helene glanced at Mari and smiled at her, shooting her a wink. Everything had gone perfectly. Aaaallll according to plan, and Helene was quite proud of her and her sister for what they were able to pull for the evening. Coming over to where Olivia and Lucian were sitting, Helene lowered herself down to the floor and then let the two little grey kittens loose. She glanced up behind her at Wesley, grinning at him, before she turned to look at William. "We found them on the way home, and decided to keep the little greys," Huh imagine that. There were the human deGrey's and now the catGrey's. Helene nearly snorted at the little joke she thought up, but she managed to keep it to herself. Instead her grin just widened. "But we wanted the little black one to go to a good home. And what better way to show Olivia responsibility then a kitten of her very own." Helene reasoned. "And!" Helene turned to the little girl, reaching out to pull her close so Helene could look at her, and that she had her full attention. "The kittens are very little still little Dove. You'll have to make sure all your ribbons are picked up and safely put away. In fact I think the best option to ensure ribbon safety is to give them to daddy to hold onto. She can hurt herself if she gets ahold of one that's left out. She's also got sharp little claws," Helene took her fingers and wiggled them at Olivia's middle, tickling her lightly. "We wouldn't want her to shred ribbons either." She told her. "Promise you'll take good care of her?" Helene asked with slightly raised eyebrows showing the little girl that it was important that the little kitten was in good hands.
"This just means you'll also have to come visit with us more often so she can see her sisters." Helene whispered to the little girl, giving her a wink before let her go.

Marinette was already opening her mouth to answer that it didn't technically say that Yule was the only time she visited her family, just that she never missed Yule, but Lucian seemed to catch himself, and she almost laughed. That was sweet, that he knew right away that he'd said something he shouldn't--but even sweeter that he'd been paying enough attention and cared enough to worry about it in the first place. She beamed at him, and before she could say anything else, Triston was taking the words right out of her mouth.
"My thoughts exactly!" she chimed in, still playing idly with Olivia's hair as she stifled a yawn with her other hand.
Marinette looked up at the sound of her sister's voice and all her sleepiness disappeared in a flash. How could she have forgotten the most exciting event of the evening? She shot a quick apologetic look to William before she detangled herself and scooped her kitten, Sasha, out of her sister's arms and kissed the top of her fuzzy little head. The kitten immediately made her way onto Marinette's shoulder and nuzzled into her neck; that was already proving to be her favorite place to nap.
She sat on a different cushion this time, closer to the brothers: this was partially in case they wanted to pet Sasha, but also just because she wanted to be nearer to them. After moving away from the sleepy heat of the fire that had put her into a bit of a daze, it felt good to be somewhere a little cooler. Relaxing in a refreshing kind of way. She leaned her back against the sofa as Helene spoke to Olivia and explained about the kittens, covering her mouth for another yawn. She was more tired than she'd thought, after such an eventful day. Sasha yawned too and curled into a little ball against her neck.

Was this a good idea? Maybe it wasn't. It didn't feel like a good idea but perhaps he was worried for nothing. It was just a kitten- it couldn't be that bad, right? And it'd teach Olivia responsibility. Still, why did he have to be the one to hand the adorable thing over? If William blamed him for somehow being a part of this, he was going to haunt Helene for the rest of her life.
He watched from the doorway as Olivia's big, brown eyes lit up at the sight of the two grey kittens, suddenly becoming very wide awake. Helene explained to her that she'd have to take care of the kitten that was currently digging little claws and teeth into his hand, and to pick up all her ribbons (something William would probably really appreciate), all the while he was murmuring curses under his breath. The damn feisty thing just wouldn't stop!
Then he was walking into the room further, shooting William an awkward, apologetic smile before kneeling down in front of Olivia. Setting the black kitten down, the thing immediately bounded towards her and his niece was all smiles and squeals of laughter. His own smile spread across his face and he chuckled as he leaned in to whisper to Helene, "Smart with the ribbons. William might be more lenient now." Not that it looked like his brother was angry. Honestly, how could he be with how happy his daughter was? She was a good kid and old enough to appreciate the sweet, vicious little monster.

Dark eyes blinked, shifting to regard his youngest brother who seemed to still be in a bit of a trance. His question brought the slightest smirk to his lips while his daughter excitedly asked for the story to be read again. By the looks of Marinette, however, she was fairly tired and he wondered if he should begin trying to wrangle everyone together to head home.
Just as he was about to speak up, however, Wesley and Helene emerged...and they were holding something in their arms. He could already see the slight fear on his brother's face, and Helene's was only half apologetic. Oh no, what did they do? Blinking again, he appeared dumbfounded, wondering if he was more tired than he truly was. Kittens? Did the sisters get his daughter kittens?
Oh, no, just one. Still. Will was completely speechless.
It was true that Olivia had been begging him for a pet for awhile now. He never relented because he felt like she had been too young and wouldn't have taken on the responsibility properly. Perhaps, though, she was old enough now...and, even if he was still currently unable to utter a word and sat there wide-eyed, he got a good look at the little fuzzy faces and, dare he say, they were pretty cute.
Well, dammit.
William did perk up a bit as Helene mentioned the ribbons and he had to refrain from laughing. It was true, but he knew she was saying it for his own benefit and sanity. "I, uh...wow." He really didn't know what to say, other than he couldn't exactly tell Olivia no. But she deserved this, and to see how brightly her face lit up was something he couldn't ignore. It made him happy to see her smiling so much.
Dark eyes flickered between Marinette and Helene, a hand pressing to his heart with gratitude. "Thank you," he murmured. "You have certainly made her holiday that much better."

Although she really wanted to hear the story all over again, Olivia was beginning to succumb to sleep. She was up way past her bedtime at this point, but she was fighting it! She was having such a good time and really did not wish to leave, even if Marinette's soothing fingers at her hair was making it difficult to concentrate on anything but slumber.
That is, until the kittens.
She sat up straight when Uncle Wesley and Helene stepped into the room, and suddenly, she found the energy to remain awake. And she squealed very loudly at the sight of the adorable creatures. Then, once more even louder, when Helene said the black one was hers.
"For me? Really?" She was suddenly buzzing with excitement. Olivia was frantically nodding when Lady Hewitt explained the situation with the ribbons, and that was certainly something she could do! 'Promise you'll take good care of her?' "Yes, yes, I promise!" The little girl was smiling so hard already that it was beginning to hurt.
When her uncle kneeled in front of her to place the kitten down, Olivia immediately picked the fuzzy baby up the moment she was close enough, gently cradling her against her chest. Her smile somehow widened and she couldn't contain her happy laughter. "She's sooooo cute! Thank you! I promise...I'll take very good care of her!"

Marinette laughed softly at the girl's reaction to the kitten. The two were a perfect match, she could tell. Luckily, William seemed pleased as well. She'd been a tad worried, but even so, she hadn't been able to resist the idea of making Olivia so happy. And the kittens had desperately needed safe homes, and she knew William could provide one for both girl and kitten.
With that taken care of, and everyone showing signs of fading, Marinette decided it was time to clean up. She was the first to rise and the others followed suit, gathering up their gifts as they trailed towards the entrance. After a few extra hugs and kitten kisses, even Olivia was ready to go, yawning in unison with her sweet little black kitten.
As the carriage pulled away down the drive, its lantern swaying, Marinette couldn't help feeling a little lonely. It was sad to let their friends go off into the bleak winter night. But, there was always the promise of tomorrow. A happy Yule indeed.
