When Helene mentioned his daughter enjoying the holiday, his dark eyes flickered over to her as she seemed amused and content to talk with Marinette before Triston was calling her over. William smiled softly. "She is," he told her. "Thank you for this." He had probably told her and her sister this several times already, but he meant it. The gatherings at the castle were always grand and spectacular...but this was nice. This was better, actually.
Her laughter brought him to a pause, glancing at Lady Hewitt and wondering if he had said something particularly funny. He couldn't be offended, however, when she began to explain. "Oh." Alright, that made sense. "I'm sorry, I wasn't...really insinuating. I didn't know." Maybe he did assume that she had loved her late husband. Then again, he hadn't ask. Even still, he seemed to ease a little knowing that he wasn't entirely alone, that she could at least understand...if not understand it far more than him.
William offered another light smile, listening to Helene as well as his daughter's laughter nearby as her uncle was lifting her up. "I know," he confessed with a light nod. "I do. I just...wish I had let go sooner." As observant as he normally was, he couldn't discern his own emotions sometimes. That was kind of strange, wasn't it? And, with that said, he did notice that flicker in her eyes before she was thanking him. "It was our pleasure, truly. It's much...quieter here than the castle." At least, he thought so and he quite obviously preferred the quiet over the large, crowded banquet hall.
When Helene acknowledged her sister, Will's attention drifted over to Marinette briefly. He couldn't help but feel like something had been wrong. And was he imagining things- were those tears? Perhaps he was just weary from the day's events, because Mari was quickly and seemingly happy to oblige the request. Soon, the music drifted over them, even garnering Olivia's attention.
"By all means..." he chuckled at Helene who was determined to drag his two youngest brothers into this decorating madness. Dark eyes watched Olivia with Marinette for a long moment, catching the girl's words and he huffed out another laugh. Oh, sure, now she suddenly wanted to play piano. Not when he suggested she learn.
Drawing his gaze away, a humored smirk still on his lips, he moved to Triston's side to lean in and whisper as he eyed the tree, "This is looking...interesting." Will was trying not to laugh.

Why did he look so shocked? Well, truthfully, he didn't really know. Maybe because this had never become a thing for any of the deGreys. At least, not really. William had had Catherine, of course, then decided it was a good idea to get involved with Margery...and that was sort of it. Triston had a fleeting thing with Eleesa all those years ago but none of them ever really spoke of it. And Wes didn't know why he all of a sudden was. If there was some underlining reason for it, the sailor was honestly completely oblivious to it. He genuinely just wanted to know.
But yes. Lucian probably was going to be teased about it. Lovingly. That spontaneous violent love.
Perhaps he should stop asking questions, though. Here wasn't the place to, and he knew Lucian didn't like announcing things to the rest of the world. This was his to cherish, and he didn't need everyone hanging on him and asking him a hundred things. Regardless, Wesley was still grinning, and Lucian wouldn't hear anymore teases from him. At least, not at the moment. His brother liked the girl, and maybe it would blossom into something, who knew? All the deGreys suddenly seemed like they were either growing up, or moving on to better things. It was a good kind of strange, he supposed.
Oh boy, though. Luci was smitten certainly. It was actually pretty adorable, and Wes had to bite down on his lip to refrain from ruining this perfectly civil moment with something completely stupid. He meant it when he actually just wanted to ask. Slapping him on the shoulder, there was a look of pride on his face. Damn his brother was a good man. Just listen to him! Maybe Wesley's question was weird and out of the blue, but it wasn't every day that some girl appeared and had Lucian speak of giving her a better life. It was charming.
And then the charm was mostly gone.
He got an elbow in the side and he heard the tease spill from the man's lips. "What're you feckin' goin' on about?" Wesley paused immediately, visibly cringing...because Olivia always had this habit of being around whenever he cursed, and he always tried not to. Fortunately, Triston was keeping her busy and he let out a sigh of relief. Then it was back to deflecting Lucian's assumption. The problem was, he didn't know how to.
And as if she knew, Helene miraculously appeared in front of them...and it actually made him jump. He glanced to the tree when she mentioned it. "Aye, a perfect tree cut down perfectly by a perfect person." Um, okay? Wesley could have rolled his eyes at himself then. "It does need some decoratin', yes...and yet, you, my lady...aren't decoratin' either." He dared to smirk before she was waving her hands at them. He grabbed Lucian by the arm, walking sideways as he ushered his brother towards the tree. "Don't turn your back, Luce...she pounces when you least expect it." And in a fake moment of panic, he rushed passed his brother as if leaving him as a sacrifice.
Godspeed, dear Lucian. I shall tell Anemone of your bravery!
He grabbed a couple of those ribbons that Olivia seemed to have all over the place, and since the tree looked overly decorated, he attempted to find places to tie them. And one of those places happened to be in William's hair. He heard the man sigh before he chuckled. Will just pulled it free and tossed it back in his face. "I've been forced to tie ribbons to things!" Wesley proclaimed.

Lucian didn't really know what else to say about it all. It wasn't often that he found a woman that he was interested in--no less that she was interested back. Then again, he spent a lot of his time around men over at the military base, so it wasn't always easy to meet women. It had happened so naturally and quick, though, and Lucian couldn't help but wonder if it was too good to be true, or if perhaps it was just fate pushing him in the right direction. Either way, Anemone made him smile and he enjoyed being around her.
He laughed at his brother's curse and just as he did, he turned to look and see if Olivia was standing nearby. He grinned and shoved Wesley again. "Come on, talk!" Yeah, perhaps it was not the place or time. Suddenly, there she was, bossing them about. Lucian's eyes widened and he looked at Helene with an expression of guilt as if mother had just scolded them. Wesley was ushering him towards the tree and he couldn't help but breathe a laugh out his nose at his comment. But then he was rushing off, leaving him to the wolves. Or a wolf? Against his brother's advice, he turned and gave a sheepish grin to Helene. Please don't kill me.
He made his way up to the tree and grabbed a ribbon, pretending to look busy with tying it to a branch, only he really had no idea what he was doing. So he just stood there, dumbfounded and trying to figure out what the point in this was. Did these women really think their tree would look nice, decorated by four men? They would have been better off just having Olivia do it on her own without her father and three uncles to mess it up. Lucian looked over at Wesley trying to tie a ribbon in William's hair. Poor William. He chuckled slightly. "Wes... I think that ribbon is more your color. It'd bring out your eyes..."

Triston chuckled at Olivia's response to his question. Of course she had another red one! He followed her orders and moved around the tree for her until she found another spot. Triston carefully set her down and as she went over to find another ribbon, he glanced over to Marinette, noticing her on the verge of tears. He frowned and placed a hand on her shoulder, offering her a reassuring smile. He wasn't certain what was bothering her at the moment, but he wanted her to know he was there for her if she needed someone. Before he could ask, though, Helene was urging her to play the piano and Olivia was giving him another ribbon to tie in the new spot she had found.
He took the ribbon from Olivia and laughed softly, tying it to the branch she wanted it on. And then she was off again, her interest now moving towards Marinette playing the piano. He laughed and glanced over to William as he came to his side and commented on the tree. Triston smirked and took a step back to glance at how the tree was looking and he let out a laugh. He couldn't stop himself. But he quickly cleared his throat and became serious again, whispering back to William, "Interesting indeed..." He smirked and continued to decorate so he wouldn't get yelled at again. "How are you doing?" He hadn't gotten a chance to talk to William since before the chase, and after hearing all about it, he felt horrible for his older brother and that his fiancee had decidedly wanted to go after him instead. "I am sorry about Margery..." He quietly whispered, his voice filled with sympathy. "I'm here... if you need to talk?" He almost felt awkward saying that because it wasn't often any of the brothers spoke of this sort of thing with one another, but he and William often spoke openly with one another, and Triston considered himself a very understanding and compassionate person.

Marinette let her fingers slow to a stop at the little girl's words and turned to her with a smile. It was cute that she wanted to learn, and it reminded her of herself at that age. She'd loved to sit and watch her mother's hands while she played. She thought it was like magic. In a way, it was a kind of magic: making music was as close to magic as she would ever come, anyway, and the closest to peace she'd ever been. Perhaps this was an opportunity to share that gift? "I bet you could learn in no time, little lapin. Here, sit with me, and I'll show you." She scooted over on the wooden bench so that Olivia could sit on her right, and once her new student hopped up beside her, she pointed to the keyboard. "I'm sure you noticed that each of the keys is a different note, right? Well, I'm going to teach you to play a duet with me. Are you ready? Let me see your hands--" she demonstrated by holding out her hands flat and wiggling her fingers, then waited for Olivia to do the same. "Now make them arch tall, like spiders..." Once the girl copied her again, she'd move her small hands so that her fingers rested on the keys needed to play the bass part of the song she'd been playing only a moment ago. "I bet you can count to three, right? That's all you need to do. Watch."Marinette tapped the girl's fingers to press the keys much more slowly than she'd been playing, counting out loud as she did. (Olivia is the blue part here!) "One, two three. Two, two, three. Three, two, three." She moved to the other hand. "Then you switch and do the other hand. One, two three. Two, two, three. Three, two, three." She smiled at Olivia. "What do you think, can you try that on your own?"

Helene arched an eyebrow at Wesley saying her perfect tree had been cut down by a perfectly perfect person. He was a bit full of himself wasn't he? "I have hostess duties to see too, like ensuring everyone has a job." She fired back at him. She nearly rolled her eyes then as he dragged Lucian to the side, ushering him towards the tree. She placed her hands on her hips, trying very hard not laugh, and to keep that serious look on her face. She scoffed then as Wesley offered Lucian as sacrifice. "I do not pounce!" She called after him, shaking her head, and then internally groaned when Lucian gave her that don't kill me look. Honestly! Wesley was going to give her a bad rep of pouncing on people at this rate! But, at least they were decorating.
Helene took a moment to observe the room again, smiling at the sight of Mari and Olivia at the piano. It brought back memories of their mother teaching Mari, and attempting to teach Helene. She then set her eye on her next victi-deGrey. And she was not going to pounce despite what a particular deGrey seemed to believe. She moved silently, all but materializing next to Lucian and pointed to an empty branch. "You missed a spot." She whispered. A small smile appearing on her face as she busied herself tying her own ribbons to the tree. "Despite what your brother has said about pouncing, I do hope I'm not that scary." She huffed quietly. Her eyes flickered back up to Lucian. "I noticed you were a bit quiet at dinner...." She began, giving Lucian an assessing look before her gaze softened. "I wanted to make sure you were feeling welcome. And that despite not meeting until today, I do really appreciate you coming. Mari and I wish to be friends with all the deGrey's." She informed him. She stood a bit taller then and began to tie a ribbon to another branch. "And if you won't mind, I've already decided we're friends." What could only be described as a wolfish grin appeared on her face as she whispered to him. "You helped me capture your wily fox of a brother, after all, and after seeing you two together, I think you and I are going to get along swimmingly." Her grin turned more wicked as she glanced up at him and then around to where Wesley was to ensure he wasn't listening, before she leaned in to whisper quietly to Lucian. "It seems you enjoy getting under his skin just as much as I do." She winked up at him then and went back to her ribbons. Pretending like she hadn't just been conspiring against Wesley with his brother.

Marinette seemed to play so flawlessly that it intrigued Olivia. The little girl couldn't help but stare at how the woman's fingers just glided across the keys with ease, like it was magic! She figured she'd never be able to play that well and having to sit still for lessons had sounded so boring when Daddy had suggested it.
"Really?" she asked in excited surprise. Mari thought she could learn! Well, if Marinette thought so then she would certainly try! With a bit of a hop in her step, she slid onto the bench beside her, unable to sit still all of a sudden again. She was so anxious but was listening intently to the woman's instructions.
Immediately, she lifted her hands up and wiggled her tiny fingers in front of her face, barely concealing the smile that lit up her features. "Ewwwwe, spiders!" she giggled but tried to copy Mari to the best of her ability. She wriggled lightly in excitement when she was helping her tap the keys and it was almost like she was playing! Soon, though, her face became serious, trying to count along and understand. A firm nod. "Yes, I think I can." Well, she was definitely going to try at least!
When she felt ready, after counting out loud to remember it, Olivia tried playing it on her own.

William chuckled lightly at Wesley's antics, chucking the ribbon back at him. He shook his head and nearly rolled his eyes before the conversation got serious again, this time with Triston.
He expected people to be asking him about all of this, asking if he was alright, especially with the whole Margery mess. Will told himself that he was fine, and he made himself appear that way on the outside, only letting a little of the hurt show. But the truth was...he wasn't okay and probably wouldn't be for awhile. As the eldest deGrey, however, it was almost as though he thought he couldn't crumble. That was such a foolish thought, he knew, but it was there anyway. He didn't want to show his weakness because he wasn't sure if it would destroy him. Wasn't sure that, if he allowed himself to fall, that he wouldn't be able to get up again.
So when Triston asked how he was doing, he just repeated what he had said to Helene. He told him that he was "better than expected", that this was "inevitable", that yes, he should have "dealt with this sooner". William didn't bother explaining why he had dragged his feet because no one really tried to understand his reasoning before, so there was no point in repeating himself. And that was fine. It was something he'd deal with on his own.
What Will didn't tell Triston was that he wasn't surprised that she had gone after him instead. Everyone noticed Triston first. Everyone wanted Triston first. Perhaps a sane person would be bitter about it or jealous, but the man just shrugged it off because it was normal. It always had been. "I appreciate it," he'd say after in regards to Triston being willing to talk, but until he knew how to completely process it, he wasn't sure what else to say. "Just...pray she doesn't start any shit tomorrow." He offered a barely-there smirk, but he really was hoping Margery didn't try to ruin the holiday. He couldn't handle that right now.
Olivia's squeal of excitement had his eyes shifting towards the piano where she was seated next to Marinette...willingly wanting to learn piano. Again, he chuckled lightly because, of course, she had argued with him about it. But because Mari had been playing or asked her to try and learn, Livi was all for it. It was typical, but it had him smirking in gentle amusement, watching as his daughter began to play. Then, it had him stopping in the decorating, lightly transfixed by how eager Olivia was to learn, how excited she got when she managed to (mostly) play the small, simple tune. Even when she messed up here and there, she didn't get overly flustered, and Marinette was all too eager and patient to help her along the way. Dark gaze drifted to the soft spoken woman, floored by how willing she was to smile despite what he'd found out earlier today. It was just proving to him further that she was stronger than she gave herself credit for.
As William quietly watched them, a plan was slowly beginning to form, an answer to the promise he had made. He honestly couldn't believe he hadn't already thought about it.
Blinking, he idly picked up another ribbon but didn't go to tie it to anything yet. He spoke to Triston once more. "I was wondering...if perhaps I should retire as ambassador," he said in way of trying to sway the subject away from Margery, even if this sort of stemmed from it. Olivia needed someone home with her, a parent. "I can't be traveling and leaving Olivia all the time...it isn't fair to her. Perhaps-" A soft pause, he managed to find one more bare spot on the tree to tie the ribbon. "I could be of some assistance to you, should you get the regency." Attention fell to his brother. "Should you need it, that is."

"Yes you dooooo!" he had called back to Helene when she denied that she pounced. And no, it certainly wasn't ladylike, but that didn't seem to bother him any.
He was holding up a purple ribbon when Lucian made his comment, and he looked at it in deep thought. "Hm, you think so?" Not really asking, he draped it around his neck as though it were a scarf, turning in place to model it. "You might be right, Luce." Wesley was about to ask Olivia what she thought when he noticed she was over by Marinette, seeming interested in playing the piano. A small smile curled his mouth as he went to find a spot to tie a green ribbon to when he noticed Helene was speaking with his young brother.
Why?
What was she saying? What was Lucian saying?
You best keep your trap shut, Luci…

Lucian laughed quietly as Wesley modeled the purple ribbon around his neck. He shook his head and just continued on with the decorating. That is until Helene stood beside him and was critiquing his work and that he had missed a spot. He laughed and smiled back at her, before listening to what she had to say.
He wasn't really scared of her. Or at least he thought he wasn't. If Wesley liked her, then he would, too. That went for all his brothers, really... Except for maybe Margery, but even he stayed civil with that mess of a woman. For the sake of William. Lucian shook his head in response and was about to say something but she was already asking about his quietness and wanting him to feel welcome. He frowned just slightly because he knew how he often came across at first impression, and he wished he didn't, but it was just how he was around new people. "Oh... I'm sorry about that... I uh... Am always quiet?" He smirked and let out a small, embarrassed chuckle. "Thank you for wanting me to feel welcome--I do." He nodded in confirmation and smiled again. "I wouldn't mind that at all..." He said with a light chuckle, agreeing that he would like to be their friends as well. As she looked away to tie a ribbon, Lucian did the same. Only, when she brought up Wesley and his assistance to her in catching him, he laughed again. "Yes... We should get along quite well, then." He winked back at her, his grin never leaving his lips then, almost as if he were trying not to laugh as he continued tying ribbons... Or at least trying to. He was never good at this sort of thing.

He could almost tell William wasn't letting on with his true feelings, but Triston wouldn't press him, at least not here. If he wanted to talk about it, he imagined that he would, all he could do was offer to be there for him should he wish to have someone to vent to. He nodded slightly as William thanked him and hoped Margery wouldn't start anything tomorrow for the holiday. Triston sighed and placed a hand on his older brother's shoulder, squeezing it lightly. He hoped for the same thing, for the sake of William and Olivia--but he didn't know what to say, so he hoped his sympathetic expression explained that he understood and would do everything he could to help ensure that nothing bad happened.
Oliva's squeal of excitement also stole Triston's attention as he glanced over towards her and Marinette at the piano. He grinned and chuckled softly, leaning into William slightly, "guess you will be buying a piano soon, hmm?"
He turned back towards the tree before Helene would yell at him for not decorating, and he tied a couple more ribbons, only stopping when William spoke of retiring. It had been a more suitable job for him when his wife was still alive to care for Olivia. But now, he was all the girl had, and Margery was hardly a good role model for the girl. It made sense to Triston that William would be thinking such a thing. But at his suggestion to assist him if he got regency, he grinned and squeezed his shoulder again, nodding. "William... There's no one else I would rather have at my side... I would love that." He meant it, too... William had always been his mentor and voice of reason and they almost always got along. He did not wish to put pressure on him just yet, but he imagined William being the perfect advisor or something on the council.

It took a couple of tries, and a few gentle nudges of her fingers onto the right keys, but Marinette beamed as Olivia successfully played the notes in the right order. She applauded softly as the girl came to a stop. "Wonderful! Now just keep doing that, and I'll add my part."
She did just as she said she would, playing the higher part of the song at a tempo that matched Olivia's. She didn't even notice she'd put her hand on the girl's shoulder and was 'playing' along with her by gently tapping her fingers. It was a little slower than she would have done alone, but she tapped her foot to keep her pace, and the song came out quite lovely. Her favorite part was the high complicated trills as the higher part added an extra note each time it repeated the melody. When it was finished, she placed her hand over Olivia's to stop her and turned to her with a grin.
"Well there you go! You've just played your very first duet on the piano!" She congratulated. "Excellent work!"

Helene found herself grinning at Lucian agreement that they would get along quite well. She didn't know why, but she had that feeling she was seeking approval from the deGrey's about being their friends. Mari really had been her one and only friend save for Elliot, but he was far older and more of a father figure. Maybe she was searching for an approval of something. She'd never had the desire to have it before. Even with her father because he would approve of nothing she did even if she did everything perfect like he wanted.
Maybe she was just happy to finally have friends...
She felt a warmth in her chest, and like Lucian, the smile didn't fade from her face. "Alright accomplice, any embarrassing tales I should know about our dear Wesley that I can tease him mercilessly about?" She whispered. She glanced up at him as a wicked smile appeared on her face. "Something tells me your the brother that would know quite a few stories." She murmured. She ran out of ribbons then, typing the last one she had on the branch. She turned to face Lucian then, giving him her full attention so he could dish the dirt on his brother.

Every so often, his eyes trailed back over to Lucian and Helene, wishing he wasn't so curious about what they were talking about. Maybe a part of him was also slightly jealous over the fact that it wasn't him she was quietly conversing with. After the entire chase, after trying to con him into coming to this dinner, he was standing there by himself with a hand full of ribbons and not knowing what to do with them.
Well, maybe he was a bigger fool than even he thought.
As the two laughed and smiled, Wesley realized he was staring- no, he was glaring at Lucian, waiting for him to catch his eye so that he could slowly mouth one word. Actually, it was a single name in warning, in a quiet plea for him not to say anything he might regret. Anemone... He inaudibly spoke the girl's name, enunciating every syllable so his brother would know. Wes was going to meet her tomorrow, if he had suddenly forgotten.
Grinning to himself, his attention drifted towards Olivia's giggles of excitement as she played a quick duet on the piano with Marinette. It was slow going, but it was certainly far better than he could do! And he actually used to take lessons way back when...only a few before he got bored of it.
Slowly wandering his way over, Olivia was rambling on about something so he gently gathered her hair into a hand, managing to tie a bright yellow ribbon around it in a low ponytail. "That was a great job, Livi," he told her, kissing her forehead quickly when she tilted her head back to look up at him. "You both played beautifully." Wesley drifted his way to the other side of the bench, not intending to hover long and interrupt this moment, but he dangled a pretty white-laced ribbon between his fingers. He looked to Marinette with a sheepish expression. "Pardon the interruption, my lady, but...your sister has instructed that I tie these bloody things, well...somewhere." He jokingly showed off the purple one that was still looped around his neck, if only to get his niece to laugh again. "And I do not think this one suits me..." He indicated the white one. If she allowed it, he'd gently and lightly tie it around her wrist, quietly whispering, "I really have no idea what I'm doin', but she's getting really bossy."

She was doing it! She was playing the piano! Definitely not as well as Marinette, but she felt this overwhelming excitement as her little fingers tapped along the keys, and she was counting out loud to herself. It was even better when Mari joined in and made it sound ten times better! The smile never left Olivia's face, and she was bouncing in her seat, swaying her short legs that didn't reach the floor.
When they were done, she turned that round face up to the woman, smiling so much that it was beginning to hurt. "Thank you! Maybe...maybe one day I'll be able to play like you!" Olivia couldn't seem to sit still as those dark eyes shifted to find William. "Daddy, did you hear me?! Do you think I could learn how to play piano?! Pleeeeeease?!" Suddenly, Uncle Wesley was playing with her hair and tying it with a ribbon, and she giggled at the amount he was carrying around. Tilting her head back so that she could look at him, her smile never faltered. "Did you see? Did you hear me play?!"
Olivia gently and idly began to tap a couple of the keys on the piano as her uncle spoke with Marinette before she was turning back to her; her hands folded politely in her lap. "Would you play another song? I'd love to listen!"
