As easy as it had been to lose herself in these moments, the brief minutes they managed to steal away to themselves- when most, if not all, pretences were dropped- Aoife could never quite shake the second thoughts, the insidious little voices that reminded her these moments were as fragile as they were precious to her. One mis-step and it would all be ripped from beneath them. That was all it would take, one little mistake. Lingering too long when eyes met at a court event or being caught all the way up here by a member of either of their households.
Even though the mystic couldn’t hope to fully suppress these thoughts- to push them down into the depths of her mind, so deep that the could no longer trouble her- it was simple enough to dull them somewhat: especially when their fingers were intertwined like this and Aoife could feel the warmth of the guardsman’s body against hers as she guided their attention over the lands surrounding Lasairdubh.
”I'd imagine the lot of you making the forest scarier for the creatures lurking there,"
A soft chuckle escaped her then, and Aoife turned a little in order to face Cian DeGraff- tugging her gaze away from the horizon for the briefest of moments. ”The rabbits and the starlings perhaps-” The mystic conceded, humour tinting her tone as grey eyes once again swept over the forest below. As adults perhaps, Aoife and her brothers had a lot less to fear from the forest and it’s creatures, even now they would probably think twice before venturing too far from the beaten path alone. However as children, Aoife doubted that even her oldest siblings would have been the favourite in a fight against a hungry bear or pack of wolves. ”-But Namyca is also home to bears and wolves and all manner of other beasts if you listen to the stories they tell in the villages. Doubt they’d be so scared of a few overconfident children.” Despite the topic, Aoife’s tone still held some humour in it.
”I suppose it’s one of the things to love about Teronna…” She mused, the humour finally vacating her voice- replaced instead with a slight sadness, an almost wistful tone. ”The mountains, the forests, the lakes, the beaches… so many peaceful places, each with their own allure.” The landscape and the magic it held was one of the reasons the Lee Fryes remained in Teronna, despite the danger. They had lands in Tresteria afterall, they would have been safe there… But Catriona loved her homeland, and as did most of her children. It would take more than a mad king to tear them from Teronna. ”I’m sure there’ll be a hunt tomorrow, if you wanted to see the forest a little closer- just watch out for any stray arrows.”

Even up here, knowing there was likely a low chance anyone would see them, Cian was being cautious. He had his moments of impulsiveness, but those same worries still remained at the back of his mind. One wrong step, one glance that lingered for seconds too long could undo all of this. To some, it might seem too soon, but Cian already knew he would fight the displeasure of his family. He'd fight them tooth and nail because, despite the soft concerns of getting caught, he felt whole standing there with Aoife. She was real, she didn't sugarcoat anything, and it felt wrong to be parted from her.
Her gentle laughter was refreshing, always seeming to ease whatever tension he might have been feeling. She spoke of bears and wolves, and the corners of his eyes crinkled a little behind his mask. Oh, he knew those wonderful beasts existed, and they were a challenge in so many ways. Cian wished he could tell her how strong they were, how fearless he felt when he melded his mind with theirs...but he couldn't. He couldn't speak a word of it.
Also, every time he seemed to have a spark of enjoyment with his "false magic", he felt guilty. He was supposed to hate it, wasn't he?
"Maybe. Maybe not," he murmured in half-thought before she continued. That bright gaze drifted back to her face, watching how the humor left and those lovely features softened.
'The mountains, the forests, the lakes, the beaches...so many peaceful places, each with their own allure.'
"Some of the people, too..." Cian was adding, once again without thought, but he didn't seem to be shy about being so obvious about it. He was staring a little again, before the horizon stole his attention away. He chuckled over her comment on stray arrows. "Perhaps. I'm not entirely sure how long my family desires to...remain." The words tasted bitter on his tongue, and he hated to say them, so his tone lightened after. "Not to mention, I rather not intimidate anyone with my hunting prowess." If only he really was that conceited. Cian couldn't even keep a straight face so maybe it was good that half his expression was shielded.

It had all seemed so safe back then, the grounds and forests surrounding her family home. Aoife couldn't recall her mother ever telling her to be careful or not to stray too far from the beaten path- so long as Aoife was home and presentable for dinner. But Allarick's war on mystics seemed to stretch throughout Aoife's entire memory, had the wardens been more of a secret then? Or merely confined to the captial and surrounding provinces? Or had Robert and Catriona managed to shield their children from the rumours and the threat for a little while?
Aoife didn't know, but despite these niggling doubts: the memories of her childhood still brought a soft smile to her lips and caused a feeling a fondness to swell in her chest. So much had changed. So much was changing. But that couldn't erase how happy she had been here once upon a time.
"Some of the people too." The mystic echoed, barely audible over the distant music and chatter- words almost swept away by the gentle breeze. It was still difficult to comprehend that this, whatever this was, this beautiful but fragile thing has sprung from a chance encounter. Again, so much had changed. And so quickly too. Lightly, Aoife bumped the soildier with her shoulder- "Just some of them mind you." she added, something akin to mirth in her tone. "Maybe one in particular."
"That's fair… Aoife mused, unable to quite mask the disappointment in her voice or on her features- even with half of them still covered by the mask. It made sense, she doubted any DeGraff would feel comfortable within Lee Frye walls for too long… but that didn't mean Aoife had to like the fact her time with Cian was once again being cut short. "Could you not find an excuse to stay?" she asked, her voice almost childlike as Aoife dared to hope for a moment. Then she caught herself. And it was gone almost as quickly as it came. "Though you've spoken so much of this prowess... Intimidating or not, I would have liked to see you in action."
If Cian could be brazen, so could she. And besides, there were so far away from their families and the other guests- they could afford to be a little brave.

Wasn't everything safer as child? You were more full of wonder and naivety that you feared the things you truly didn't have to fear. At least, that's how it had been for him. Everything had been so much easier until he grew older, and the fire took away some of his family. There was always going to be that black space in his heart that would never heal, no matter how happy he was. The small bit of darkness was always going to remain.
Still, not everything was dark. In truth, his days had felt a bit brighter, and he believed it was the mere fact that this woman beside him had found her way into his life. It had been a curious happenstance, their meeting, and one he realized that he was incredibly grateful for. Cian just wished they didn't have to go so long with being apart, yet such was the nature of these things.
'Just some of them mind you.'
He smirked at that, his gaze traveling back to her when she bumped his shoulder lightly. Maybe one in particular was precisely what he had been thinking, and quite often as of late.
The note of disappointment made his own expression falter a little, and he nearly sighed. The logic was trying to override what he truly wanted, and he absolutely despised it. Taking certain risks would be foolish, but he also didn't want to care. He wanted to cast the damn common sense to the wind.
'Could you not find an excuse to stay?'
It was the way she said it, with that tinge of hope that halted him, and the light smirk it brought back to his lips only increased as she continued. "I could find a way," he murmured. Normally he was pretty reserved, but she always managed to bring some sort of challenge out of him, big or small.
"The next moon, you will see it..." he said quietly, bringing up the hope that they would indeed be able to sneak away in the near future. "But, it would seem-" Cian turned to face her completely; one of his hands rising up where he hesitated for only a moment before daring to gently remove her mask if she allowed him. "I've already proven this prowess...because I've managed to ensnare you, haven't I?" Oh, that was a cheeky assumption, and the smirk on his face made it clear that he knew it.
Perhaps he was being a bit brazen now, temporarily forgetting that there was still a slight chance someone would see them. Yet, right now, he didn't care, because he wanted to be able to see her face even if it had to be briefly. This hiding was already becoming tiresome, and a part of him wanted to just run away into those dark woods with her that very second.

The world has seemed so much bigger then, back when she was small. The grounds of Lasairdubh had been more than a kingdom, the surrounding forests seemed to stretch to the ends of the earth. And yet, it had been so much safer. The dangers existed only on the periphery of her imagination, stories her mother would craft of words and smoke from the fireplace (sometime’s cigarettes when Aoife’s father was away… though this was her’s and Catriona’s little secret).
So much had changed, though Aoife had grown… and her horizons expanded… the world seemed smaller. She travelled the length and breadth of Teronna with the army, and yet with every league the world seemed to shrink. As did her sense of wonder. Then all at once, the world was torn from under her, and her world became little more than four walls and a suffocating grief. Slowly, light trickled back in. Cian DeGraff had helped with that, not that he would ever know just how much.
Which was probably why she noticed his absence so acutely, so often the soldier seemed to take the sunlight with him. Though Aoife felt her own self returning day by day, she still felt closer to her when he was nearby. And when they were together, surrounded by other people, it was difficult not to look at him as though he was the only light in the room.
Just as how she looked at him now.
With that same childlike wonder in which she had once seen the world. As though the stars and moons were little more than tallow candles burned to the very stub. Like he was the only thing in her world. And when ’I could find a way’ fell from the guardsman’s lips, Aoife couldn’t have kept her features from breaking into a smile if she had tried to fight it. Hope swelled in her chest, her heart racing before reason crept into her mind… someone would notice… someone would question it… it was too risky…
But she didn’t voice these worries, these concerns… no, the mystic wanted it too badly. It was worth the risk wasn’t it? Worst case her family would think that the DeGraff was snooping. Best case, they would believe Cian was trying to build a bridge.
”I’m counting on it.” She breathed, allowing the mask to be removed. ”Though- Aoife said lightly, gaze trailing the mask before flitting back to rest upon the soldier’s features. ”-bold of you to assume you snared me and not the other way around.” She pointed out- knowing full well that the two of them had almost unwillingly walked into the metaphorical snare together.

Not only did she manage to keep him grounded and sane, recalling that the world wasn't entirely lost to darkness, there was this voice at the back of his mind telling him to be cautious. It was always there, but it was more prominent this evening because he was in "uncharted territory". This was Lee Frye land- his supposed "enemy"- and he was growing a little too attached to their only daughter.
Cian should really care a lot more about that than he actually did. But it was difficult to care whenever she smiled at him, whenever she was right there in front of him.
It certainly didn't make sense for him to stay if the rest of his family didn't, but he barely thought about any possible consequences because she had asked him to find a way. Not only that, but it was becoming incredibly difficult to leave her every single time, knowing he couldn't just drop by on a whim, or stand close to her at court. Everything had to be an intricate dance, they had to think one step ahead...and this thing between them had barely even begun. He was already finding it exhausting to lie and sneak around, so much that Cian feared it would make him do something stupid, would make him too brazen and spontaneous. Such as removing that mask from her face right now.
'-bold of you to assume you snared me and not the other way around.'
Somehow, that grin of his widened before this sudden impulsiveness won out. It was kind of a new look for him. "I won't argue with that," he rushed in a deep whisper. The DeGraff's movements were quick; the mask pulled from his face to be cast aside without care just as fingers filtered into those raven tresses. His other arm was still wrapped around her waist to keep her close against him, propriety be damned, and he leaned in to claim her mouth in a drugging kiss.
Up there, the rest of the world didn't exist. If for the rest of the night he had to pretend that she wasn't this beacon of light in his darkness, then he would take just one moment to forget the metaphorical mask and simply be with her.

Believe it or not, a particular pair of twins was not already at the party. Which, one: should concern just about everyone, and two: if their mother found out what they were doing she would cry out in alarm and then have their heads on silver platters, or mounted on the entry hall to warn all of her children what happened when you crossed her. But one thing the twins had that the others didn't, or at least what Seamus fully believed; They were Mommy's favorites. Being a bit late to auntie Em's party wasn't going to be that big of a deal. Besides, everyone was wearing mask, and Seamus was sure that only their mother would be able to detect the two of them in theirs.
Seamus was rather happy for a masked ball. He spent a majority of his free time in a mask anyways, though it was the opposite of the one that dangled loosely around his neck. He was perched up on one of the parapets, blending in with would be gargoyles as he crouched on the stone, looking down at the still arriving carriages. Watching Catriona and Emilia's guest still arriving. "How many people did those bloody women invite! All of Teronna?" He exclaimed quietly. He pursed his lips, wondering if Cami would come. He had invited her after all, but she was a commoner. Was she unable to find a dress? Maybe he should have forwarded her some coin for one? Or would that have been too forward of him?
He gave his head a slight shake, and sighed. "Think we're done? Someone really is going to think we're plotting something." He grinned before he turned and hopped down. Glancing at his twin. They were discussing business of course, and the only way to talk business out of the prying ears of their family was to go to the roof. Something both of them were experts in navigating as well. While everyone else in the family went off to play solider, the twins were devilish rogue vigilante's, keeping the streets of Ethion safe from rogue mystic and creeper alike. Seamus reached out to dust Seoras' shoulder off, ensuring they both looked their best, before he led the way down the path. Heading back to the door they'd come up here with. Seamus was already getting the lock pick out of the inner part of his jacket pocket when he started to hear voices.
Instantly he was on alert and looked at Seoras, pressing himself against the side of one of the walls as he started to creep down to the corner. No one else should have been up here, and if someone was, they had to be a Lee Frye, because they were the only ones that didn't get lost in Lasairdubh. Seamus's brows furrowed as he crouched down and then peaked around the corner. From what he could see, it was a woman and a man, and he strained his ears, but it sounded like Aoife. That certainly peeked his interest. He glanced towards Seoras, sharing a silent look with him, before glancing back. The man's back was to them, and he was suddenly pulling the ladies mask off. The way the moonlight creeped in, and hit just right, the voice was in fact confirmed as Aoife, but who was she with? What were they doing?
He clenched his jaw suddenly, as an overwhelming sense of protectiveness flooded through the younger Lee Frye. This wasn't just anyone, this was Aoife! Where it was probably expected that the twins would chase after one of their big brothers, that hadn't been the case. The twins had gravitated towards their sister, and she could do no wrong in their eyes. She was a goddess, and a saint, and after everything she'd been through? "Whatcha think, your doin, buddy..." Seamus growled under his breath, as he watched the man toss aside his mask, and then watched where his hands went. Into Aoife's hair, where they didn't belong, and Seamus quickly averted his eyes.
Oh. Oh good lord in heaven, that was not something he wanted to see. He instantly made a face, but his own impulsiveness won over. And if the twins could find them, then that met someone else could just as easily. Besides, Seamus didn't want anyone macking on sister that he didn't know. The left shoe he was wearing was suddenly off, and Seamus barely looked at Seoras, before he stepped out from behind the corner, his bright blues glaring at the back of that skull. The man was lucky it was merely a stinky shoe, and not a ash bomb, or Seamus would have really made his night explosive. "Oi! That's our Sister," The shoe was hurled with surprising accuracy. It wasn't a dagger like Seamus was used to throwing, but it would serve it's purpose as he aimed it at the back of the man's head.

"How many people did those bloody women invite! All of Teronna?"
Seoras chuckled quietly. "I think that was the plan, yeah." Knowing Mum and Auntie Em, that sounded about right. The more people having fun at a Lee Frye party, the better. Especially with the princess herself in attendance.
Still, he didn't mind being late--in fact, he rather preferred it. He hadn't gotten a date in time, and he had a perfectly valid concern that one of "those bloody women" was going to try and set him up with one. He was actually looking forward to dancing with strangers tonight. Wasn't that what a masquerade was for, after all?
Seamus was already getting the lock pick out of the inner part of his jacket pocket when he started to hear voices.
Instantly he was on alert and looked at Seoras, pressing himself against the side of one of the walls as he started to creep down to the corner.
The way his brother stopped him was familiar; they'd been hiding from trouble together since they could walk. But since when did they hide from Aoife when they hadn't done anything wrong? He didn't crouch as much as Seamus, putting a hand on his brother's shoulder to steady himself as he, too, leaned around the corner to watch the couple.
Seoras's eyebrows about climbed off his face when the two started kissing like the world was going to end and this was their only chance. Well then! He'd thought Aoife was going to be mourning for the rest of her days, the way her grief had hit her, but this certainly said otherwise. If he'd had any clue who the man was, he might have liked it better, but as it was, he was just pleased to see her taking steps towards her own happiness, whoever the lucky fellow might be.
See, where Seamus had seen an interloper, some weirdo sucking face with their sister, Seoras had realized that nobody was going to be snogging Aoife of all people if that wasn't exactly where she wanted them to be.
But while he was working that out, his brother had lept into action. A very, very ill-advised action.
"Seam--!" Seoras yelped in protest, raising his hand to try and catch his brother before the shoe left his hand. He was too late. His twin's dress shoe went sailing neatly across the roof towards the back of this stranger's head.
Oi vey, Aoife was going to kill them.

Everything, it seemed, was about to come to a screeching halt.
So lost in her, in the very presence of her as he held her close, Cian didn't think they were in any real danger of getting caught up on the roof. There hadn't been a soul in sight, drifting far from the busy party that he was willing to throw caution to the wind, even if for but a moment.
Fingers filtered further into those perfectly coifed curls, daring to gently muss up her enticing evening look as his other hand trailed along her lower back, across her waist until fingers gently kneaded in the pliant flesh of her hip beneath the gown.
'Oi! That's our sister!'
Fortunately, whoever that fool was, had alerted him to his presence beforehand. It was only a second or two, but it was enough to startle Cian and make him break away from Aoife. Slightly dazed, blinking in confusion, he was in the process of moving to turn around to face whoever it was when something hit him at the side of the head. It likely would have hurt a lot more if he hadn't already been moving out of the way.
An arm came up as if ready to deflect whatever else might come propelling towards him while the other instinctively tried to usher Aoife behind him. "What the-" Muttering to himself, he caught sight of the two figures, the one's words coming back to him immediately.
"Sister" he had yelled.
Well, fuck.

Aoife didn’t resist as that hand guided her closer, pushing her frame against the guardsman’s. His hands in her curls were more than welcome, all cares as to how they looked tossed aside the moment they had stolen away from the main hall- Aoife had been wanting this since the moment they had last said their goodbyes, since every little stolen glance at court, and since she had first found him at tonight’s masquerade.
She craved it. Cian’s presence, his touch. And up here, it was finally just the two of them, alone and safe from the worries of the world. It was intoxicating beneath the stars-
’our sister’
This kiss broke, and with it the skies came crashing down. Aoife glazed wide eyed- first to Cian then the source of the noise. The noise, the voice. She recognised it instantly- and where Séamus Lee Frye was Seoras Lee Frye was likely to be close behind. Fuck. There was nowhere to run, nowhere to go. Aoife had assumed her family would be occupied with the spectacle downstairs- far away from this place. And now she had barely a moment to register what was happening before a shoe was flying through the air- smacking the guardsman right against the side of his head.
”Seamus.” The woman hissed, eyes quickly darting towards the door and noting the two figures silhouetted against the lamplight. ”Seoras.”. She hissed again, though more serious- as though expecting him to both know and do better.

Despite his twin's attempts to stop the shoe of impending death, (whose death it was impending was still to be determined) it met its target with a satisfactory hit. If he wasn't suddenly in a mood, Seamus might have smiled.
Unlike his brother who was happy at the prospect of Aoife being with someone new, Seamus was the complete opposite. There were rare few things that tended to dampen the otherwise always smiling Lee-Fyre, and anything that might hurt Aoife was at the top of the list. He'd behaved as such with her husband at first until she proved to be rather serious about him, at which point Seamus had supported her and even warmed up to Allistair. But he'd also seen what his death had done to her, and dare he fear she shouldn't get to close as to possibly hurt herself again?
This wasn't just some sibling of his. He could care less about his other brothers (save Seoras of course) but this was Aoife. The best role model he could have had growing up. The one he wanted to just be like, and who he would bring daisies too whenever he found them. Aside from Seoras, their sister was Seamus' whole world.
Call it sibling jealousy that he wasn't the center of hers now...
He clenched his jaw and started to walk towards the pair. Ignoring the fact his now shoeless foot was showing the rather big hole he had in his sock where his big toe was peaking through. Seamus wasn't the tallest man, in fact, besides Seoras, they were both the shortest Male Lee-Fry's at only 5'8. But Seamus had never been one to let his size make him insecure and stalked all the way towards Aoife and the man. His blue gaze looking her over for any sign of inebriation, both mystical and regular. The last thing this man would want to do, would be to try and take advantage of Aoife Lee-Frye. "Are you alright?" He asked quietly, his face taking on one of concern. She could get mad at him all she wanted, he was still going to make sure she made it back to that party safe and sound that this...miscreant! (Look at the pot calling the kettle black) got those lustful thoughts out of his noggin.
The concern quickly fell, before he gave the man his attention and narrowed his eyes suspiciously at him. Crossing his arms over his chest. "Seamus Lee-Frye, and you are?" He asked, keeping his tone somewhat casual, but there was still a hint of cold demand to it.

Seoras flinched at his sister's voice, having his fears confirmed. She was furious with them. He'd have to talk with her later, try and soften that if he could. After all, he had tried to stop Seamus, and he knew Seamus's motives were good. It wasn't as if they were doing it just to cause trouble, after all. They were worried about her.
Resigned to his fate for now, Seoras followed at his twin's shoulder. Since Seamus addressed Aoife first, Seoras turned his gaze to the man and gave him a nod of acknowledgement. His stance was tense, but his face didn't carry the same animosity as his twin, even now. He wasn't planning to run this guy out of town, even if his brother was. He was cautiously curious, for now.
He didn't bother adding his name--it would be clear from what Aoife said, and honestly rather pathetic for him to interject his own name after that venomous intro from Seamus.

Whoever they were, Aoife knew them immediately. That probably should have made him feel a little more at ease, but it did everything but that. As she spoke the two names, Cian was blinking away the rest of the stars in his eyes to focus more on their shadows; easing up on his sudden "guardsman pose", not that Aoife needed him to do it to begin with. It was just a reflex after everything that had been going on.
One was asking if Aoife was alright, and he clearly should have been offended- that feeling was halted immediately when Seamus' eyes fell back to him and introduced himself. It was a clear threat, and Cian couldn't help but straighten his back and turn to face him fully. Brothers or no brothers, he wasn't going to simply turn tail. The boy threw a shoe, excuse him for not being terribly scared. If anything, he was slightly agitated.
'-and you are?'
He fixed the cuffs of his jacket, blue eyes staring down the shorter Lee Fryes in front of him. "Cian," he said sternly. Perhaps he should have left it there, but maybe there was a part of him that wanted Seamus to know just who he was trying to fuck with. Cian wasn't the type to start a fight, but he knew how to finish it, and right now these two (or the one?) were attempting to damage his pride.
"DeGraff." He let the name filter into the air, knowing there might be a lot of damn questions, or worse. It was essentially a back off warning in the nicest way possible.

Oh no, oh no. This was bad. This was everything she had worried about coming to life. And Aoife felt her heart beat, no pound with each passing moment. Granted, Granted it could have been worse. It could have been her father or mother who ventured up to the north tour this evening, but instead it had been the twins- they might have well as been Cat as far as Aoife knew-- the twins were close to their mother, closer than Aoife could ever hope to be even as the only daughter (and they all knew it).
She took one deep, steadying breath.
DeGraff Cian had already put his foot in the proverbial mouth, and Aoife could only watch as realisation crossed and lingered upon her twin brother’s faces. ”Wait- no- boys.” Her tone flitting from panicked to commanding to begging- her brows furrowed and just praying her younger brother’s would pay heed long enough.

The thing about Seamus- He suffered from a chronic form of stupidity. He was unperplexed by the other man's show of testosterone as he too squared his shoulders and attempted to look "manly." This was his sisters honor here, and he'd defend it with his dying breath. As the Cian introduced himself, he blinked. Almost wondering if he'd heard him correctly, and for a moment the surprise flickered across his face as he looked at his twin.
Had he fallen off the roof and hit his head? Was this the after life? His brows furrowed in confusion and he looked to Aoife. There wasn't a look of horror, or betrayal, no freaking out that she'd betrayed the family for lip locking with a DeGraff of all people. None of that. The most Seamus's face showed was his complete confusion. "Do we need to change your name to Ciaran?" He blurted.
Aoife's begging tone was enough to halt him in his tracks and for a moment the confusion fell to shock. Had it been any other sibling, Seamus would have made them really beg for his cooperation. But this was Aoife. Seamus glanced at Seoras, sharing one of those "twin looks" they often shared. The kind where they could talk without saying the words, and he knew they would be on the same page. They were team sister from the very beginning and not even a DeGraff could change it. Seamus thought the feud was stupid anyways, though he never voiced for good reason.
He glanced back to Aoife, and then back at Cian. A look of hesitation had replaced the hostility before he looked at her again. "Are you serious about him?" He asked. Not in a condescending way for once. It was a simple question spoken in the most serious tone Seamus Lee-Frye was capable of. He wanted to know, as it was would determine his next course of action.
