GRAMARYE GIFT: Holding/Taking Breath - Ivy can either hold her breath for up to twenty minutes without any physical harm. She can make it almost to thirty, but will wind up with a severe headache. She can also 'take someone's breath away' by forcing the breath out of someone's lungs and inhaling it herself. She has to be quite close to someone, as if she were going to kiss them. If she keeps it up, she can force them to pass out. Theoretically, she could also kill them by depriving them of oxygen, but she has never done so.
PERSONALITY:
Somehow, in spite of her brushes with death, or perhaps because of them, Ivy has remained a kind-hearted and generous individual. She is very much of the belief that if you can help someone else, you should. Ever since a young woman saved her life three years ago, she has been volunteering at and donating to the local orphanage in the hopes of repaying her debt to the universe. She knows there is nothing more she can do for the woman who saved her life, but she hopes that she can at least use the gift she has been given to touch the lives of others.
Ivy is a relatively simple woman. She was raised to be a good wife and mother, and that's what she's doing. Life keeps trying to throw crazy twists at her, but somehow she is still going, still trying to do her best.
She's also clumsy to the point that it's a running joke. She's constantly got 'mystery bruises' that she gets from bumping into furniture, knocking things over, falling out of bed, tripping on her own feet, and other things. That's part of the reason her many almost-deaths have ceased to phase her; she just assumes that most things are her own fault, or just in her nature.
HISTORY:
Everything in her life was a perfectly straight line, going through the path she'd always been told to follow. Her father chose her husband, Davis, because the two were close, and gave the two of them an additional parcel of land on the coast for a summer home. She had a beautiful wedding, she likes her husband, and her son Joseph was born a year later. Things took a wild turn three years ago when someone tried to cut her throat.
Her husband insists it was a rogue mystic in a black cloak, but Ivy herself never saw her attacker, only the bejeweled dagger he left behind. She was bleeding out in the street and had an out of body experience, watching her husband try to stop the flow of blood with his hands as he screamed for help. A pretty young woman said she was a nurse, and helped her. Ivy thought she was the only one who knew what the woman had done; she could feel the healing energy in her blood, making her smile as she returned to her body.
It turned out, however, that despite being grateful to still have his wife, Davis turned in the young woman to the authorities. Ivy argued again and again for the woman's release, because she had saved her life, and could have saved countless more, but the king's men insisted that any mystic was a dangerous one, and had to die. She forced herself to attend the excecution, despite how much it upset her. She didn't eat for nearly a week afterwards, and her husband was furious with her.
Almost a year later, at a Yule party, someone 'accidentally' gave Ivy a cookie made with powdered almonds--which she is extremely allergic to. She would have died if it weren't for the quick reaction of a young herbalist (Pandora Valis ) attending the same party--and, of course, the fact that she technically didn't need to breathe during that time period, although she had to let herself gasp and suffer with so many people around.
This last summer, she, her husband, and her son went out sailing on a gorgeous sailboat with a sunset painted on its sail. They had a picnic lunch on board and everything was going beautifully until a storm cropped up. (The men on the beach had tried to warn them, but Davis, ever stubborn, had insisted they wouldn't be out long enough for it to be an issue.) The boat rocked wildly on a big wave and Ivy was tossed overboard. The wave carried the boat farther and farther from her.
She had avoided water since she had first discovered her ability and feared being caught, but she was able to make it back to shore. Her husband was stunned, and her son was overjoyed to find her sopping wet and complaining of the loss of her shoes when they made it back to the beach.
The last few months have been fairly normal, although she still goes to Pandora now and then when she is feeling listless.
What Ivy doesn't know:
- David Rhodes has had a mistress, Jessalyn Groves, since his wife was three months pregnant with Joseph. The two of them have maintained a relationship since then.
- When her father passed away and left his land and estate in trust to Joseph, Ivy became manager of all that money. She uses it sensibly, and is saving most of it for her son. Davis hates her for this, and wants the land and money for himself. Having it sit is driving him mad.
- Every near brush Ivy has had with death, and a few more she was never even aware of, has been an attempt on her life orchestrated by Davis. He can't be seen to have killed her himself, or he won't be able to inherit the money and remarry.
