"My heart is like a haunted house
There's things in there that scratch about
They make their music in the night
And in the day they give me such a fright"
Face Claim: Jennifer Connelly
Player: Cassiopeia
CHARACTER NAME: Ophelia Grace Debienne
AGE: 27
CURRENT RESIDENCE: Tresteria
APPEARANCE: A woman with pale skin, dark hair, and vibrant green eyes. After being predominately indoors for twelve years, she's paler than average and appears a bit ghostly herself.
MARITAL STATUS: Unmarried
FAMILY TIES: Father- Alicio Debienne [deceased]; Mother- Iva Debienne; Older Brother- Lorin Debienne [deceased]; Older Brother - Julien Debienne
POSITION/OCCUPATION: Invalid (a person made weak or disabled by illness or injury.)
TITLE/RANK: Daughter of a Marquis (Lady Ophelia Debienne)
GRAMARYE GIFT: Spirit Medium - Ophelia can see and speak to the dead. They appear as real to her as anyone else, and she can converse with them freely, depending on their stability. Her gift has been mistaken for madness and led to her being isolated and sedated.
LIKES: candles, hiding places, books, singing and humming, chatting with her father and brothers, origami, scaring her mother
DISLIKES: mirrors (they lie), locks (they trap), knives (they cut), large bodies of water (they drown)
"What if I'm not what you thought,
What if my laugh if isn't easy to
Catch and I've been swallowing stones.
You ask me, you ask me to shrink,
Oh, my bones feel hollow I think."
HABITS: talking apparently to no one, insisting that she's not ill, leaving little origami animals around the house, knitting sweaters for her mother's little dog
SELF IMAGE: Ophelia doesn't think there's anything wrong with the way she is. She's perfectly sensible and doesn't lie. She doesn't understand why everyone thinks she could be a danger to herself or others. This is probably because she has no memory of her fits.
REPUTATION: Only the vaguest rumors of a Debienne sister still filter through court from time to time. Most people speculate that she killed herself or mysteriously died, like her brother and father.
PERSONALITY: At her core, Ophelia is a curious, thoughtful woman. She loves to learn new things and pick up new skills and hobbies to keep herself busy.
While she insists that she is wholly and terribly sane, Ophelia is, in fact, a bit strange. Growing up with one living brother and one ghostly one will do that to a person. She often talks to people that no one else can see, knows things she shouldn't, and is frightened by things that aren't there. She will also have strange fits where she appears to be an entirely different person, or shout strange gibberish, or collapse to the floor in something like a seizure.
She isn't afraid of death, however. For her, it seems to be just another stage of life, a part of the path that things naturally follow. She knows, however, that those who die violently are much more likely to be stuck on this plane--and she doesn't wish to join her brother and father, much as she loves them. Rin (her elder brother Lorin) has been her best friend since she was little, although she has aged and he has not. She still plays games with him when she can.
One of her biggest frustrations is that everyone is so convinced she's crazy. She's read about people like her in books, mediums who can speak to spirits, but "those are fairy tales, dear, just make believe."
HISTORY:
Everyone thought that Ophelia simply had an imaginary friend when she was little, although her strange fits of acting like someone else entirely began to worry the family. Alicio was most concerned, although he never confided in his wife exactly why he was afraid.
As she grew older, her abilities intensified, which in turn meant she was seeing ghosts left and right. Her ancestral home is filled with old family buried on the grounds, and going out in public she often met spirits tied to other people and places. When 15 year old Ophelia was chatting with one of her 'imaginary' friends at a ball and began dancing with 'no one' that was the final straw for Lady Debienne--she took Ophelia home and hasn't let her leave the estate since. The servants have all signed contracts stating they'll never speak of her in public, and all memory that Julien Debienne ever had a younger sister has faded away to a blur. Instead, there are rumors that a ghost woman haunts the halls of Blackthorn Manor.
The fact that Ophelia wanders the hall barefoot in lacey clothing and tends to appear as if from nowhere doesn't help matters. Many of the servants are frightened of the 'madwoman' who lives in the West Wing, but those who have been there longest know that she's nothing to be afraid of.
