Although he now wanted to know what kind of lie she might come up with, Jaren knew he wasn't going to use it. There was no point. It wasn't like many would even ask him why his hand was bandaged up- maybe just Bri and Griff, as his father would likely chalk it up to his son training to better himself. So he wouldn't fail again should war come to their doorstep again.
There was the faintest of grins when she told him what her daughter would likely say. Oh, and that would be far from the truth, too. He wasn't even considered a hero, so he certainly wouldn't be saving some beautiful princess. Still, it was her comment of joking conceitedness that managed to keep him mildly amused.
He huffed a quiet laugh out through his nose, "A bear?" Oh no, certainly not! He'd have to be mad to try and take on a bear. The mood quickly changed again, and he regarded her sudden tired look. '...give them as much of the truth as you can,' she said, and Jaren refrained from sighing. How was he to do that with her?
"I'm sorry," he murmured when she expressed she was having problems sleeping, and said nothing more because he wasn't sure what else he could say in that regard. He barely ever slept, and it was nothing new for him. It was how it was for years.
A few more moments, and she was done with his hand. "Thank you," he told her, nodding to acknowledge her instructions. Then, he slowly rose up to his feet to prepare to leave, but her expectation of a good story halted him from taking another step. Jaren forced on another soft grin. "I'll, uh...I'll see what I can come up with," he told her, yet it was very likely that he would completely forget. "Thank you, Lady Cadigan."
Finally moving, he paused again; turning a bit to regard her from over his shoulder. Tell as much of the truth. "I am sorry for your husband. He was a good man, and one of the best that I was fortunate to have met." And that was the truth, just not the whole of it.

With her task complete, Prim found she held her hands, now empty of his, folded in her lap. Watching him rise to his feet as he prepared to leave. A soft smile was on her face as she nodded in acknowledgment. “If it gets infected, come back and we’ll treat it.” She added on quickly. Suddenly trying to think of any excuse she could to possibly get him back in. Which was not a thought a nurse should be having. Still, there was a part of her that was disappointed to see him go. Wanting to get to know the man her husband had held in such high regard. Who he would constantly write to her about.
“I’d follow him anywhere, darling. He’s a good man.” Anthony had told her adamantly. She wanted to see this good man for herself.
She decided to put herself to work and stood up to start cleaning up, and those bright eyes flickered to the lieutenant’s retreating form. Seeing that soft smile as he told her he’d see what sort of tale he could come up with. “Of course, Lieutenant.” She nodded at his thanks. She resumed her clean-up, expecting him to leave when his voice sounded again, and this time, Prim’s movements ceased. Her head slowly turned towards him as she caught his eye from over his shoulder.
The shock was clear on her face before a somber look took over and a weak smile appeared on her face. She didn’t wish to cry, but her eyes were starting to mist. If only Anthony had been alive to hear those words from the man he’d idolized. “Funny, he said the same about you too Lieutenant.” She said with a small huff of laughter. Her hands tightened in her apron, and she forced that sadness away. A wider smile appeared on her face. “Thank you,” She said with a dip of her head.

Jaren was torn. He wanted to leave, he wanted to rush as fast as he could to get out of there as quick as he possibly could...while the other half wanted to remain, perhaps to try and clear his conscience. In all honesty, he wasn't sure, but the back and forth inside his head was making him confused, and only deepening the guilt he couldn't seem to get rid of.
It only got worse when he caught the shock on her face. Maybe he shouldn't have said anything at all, he should have just kept walking and kept his damn mouth shut. He was opening wounds even further, for the both of them, and he inwardly cursed at himself.
What she didn't know, was that Jaren had spoken such words to Anthony before he passed. Before he died right in his arms. The lieutenant- formerly captain- had managed to find a few seconds in between his initial shock to tell the man everything he possibly could before his last breath.
He almost looked down at his hands, wondering if they were still stained with Anthony's blood.
'Funny, he said the same about you, too, Lieutenant.'
That kept him still for a few seconds more, but it was like a knife embedded into his flesh, turning and twisting until he couldn't breathe. Still, he forced a small smile and a nod of gratitude before his pace picked up and he made his way out.
The cool, wintery air did nothing to calm him.
