Once she'd said goodbye to Bastian, and both of them set out to face the day, Rosemary had found herself wondering if half the things that had happened the night before had been just a dream. She tried to get ready as normal--she got dressed, leaving her corset on the bed until Ioana Cawdor would be around to help, and then started to brush her hair--but she didn't make it very far. She paused mid-stroke brushing her hair, staring blankly into the mirror without truly seeing. Her mind was far off.
Things are changing so fast. It's hardly been two days, and already, I've been attacked, rescued, threatened, kissed, nearly ruined a relationship… Did that really happen? Did I… Did he…? I wouldn't have expected that from him, not at all. And we've barely known each other until now. Is this how normal people start things? It always seems so much more… obvious, when Lucas does this sort of thing. Did I miss signals I should have seen? She'd been blindsided by Bastian's sudden affection, although she'd been content to follow along in the moment. It had all made sense, then, but now that she was looking back, she wondered how they'd ended up there. Had she been the one putting up signals, without even realizing it? She sighed heavily and started to brush again.
Really, nothing serious can come out of it, can it? My parents would never allow--Oh, god. If they even had an inkling that he and I--" She shivered at the thought of how her father would react. He'd thrown everything off his desk onto the floor when she told him about ending her engagement. She could only imagine what would happen if she admitted to ruining all her marriage prospects for good. No, I'd better be more careful. I know we wanted to set Magnus off, to make him act rashly, but… Perhaps this wasn't such a good idea, after all…
When her maid-in-waiting did come in, the sound startled her out of a trace with a yelp, and she dropped her brush onto the vanity with a clatter.
"Ioana!" she cried, putting a hand on her heart as if she could steady its racing pulse. "You scared me half to death."
