I set my mind a-wandering and I walk a broken line
You have a mind to keep me quiet
And although you can try,
Better men have hit their knees
And bigger men have died
Face Claim: Charlotte Kemp Muhl
OOC Name: Cassiopeia
CHARACTER NAME: Lacey Rose DeGraff
AGE: 26
CURRENT RESIDENCE: Teronna
APPEARANCE: Lacey is a woman of about average height with a nice figure that she dresses to kill--more often literally than figuratively. She likes to wear pants, carry a variety of knives, and keep her hair pulled back whenever she can. When attending events with the family, she often drifts towards the more scandalous side of fashion because she enjoys being infamous.
MARITAL STATUS: Widow
FAMILY MEMBERS: Son - Mark Jr (MJ) Age 3 || Adoptive Father - Jareth DeGraff || Adoptive Mother - Maeve DeGraff
POSITION/OCCUPATION: Publicly: noblewoman & artist Secretly: Warden Duenna
GRAMARYE GIFT: Lock pick. Lacey is able to manipulate any kind of metal lock and pick it without tools. More complicated locks take more time. She needs extreme focus to do so, as she 'listens' for the fall of the tumblers through vibrations. If she is interrupted or in a loud/dangerous environment this becomes nearly impossible.
Call me a criminal, maybe
Baby, I'm an outlaw
You know I ain't evil, but I ain't a saint
Can't help it, I was born this way
PERSONALITY: Lacey is sly and witty, using other's words and actions against them whenever possible. She has been raised from a young age to speak with a silver tongue and talk others into doing things they would not have done otherwise, or to distract them from her true motives. Raised by a criminal, she has blurred morals but will fight strongly for what she believes is right. Her primary values are loyalty and pride. She will never break her word, even if it means her own death.
She enjoys a battle of wits and is always eager for a challenge; her favorite people are those who are fun to antagonize or who can keep up with her verbal sparring.
She is not technically a kleptomaniac, but she likes stealing things just for the adrenaline rush. She often returns them, putting them strange places so they appear to have just been 'lost.'
Her husband's death was unexpected and violent, and more than that, Lacey blames herself as he took a blow intended for her. She was extremely distraught for several weeks after his death, but thanks to some tough love from a certain someone, she was able to pull herself together. She has a new rule: never be helpless again. She will aggressively defend her right to do things herself and often rejects well-meaning offers of help.
The only reason she allows her adoptive parents to care for MJ is because she feels they may do a better job of raising him to be "normal" than she will. She doesn't want him to think that she or his father didn't care or weren't there for him, but she feels that he will be better off if he doesn't turn out like her: a liar and a thief.
HISTORY:
Lacey was born after the illegitimate relationship between her mother and Earl McIntyre (father of Rosemary McIntyre & Lucas McIntyre ). She has never met her biological father and only knows he was a nobleman. She has no idea that he was an earl, only that he was well off. He gave her mother a large sum of money and told her to have the problem taken care of. Marianne decided to have the baby.
Marianne married a petty thief and a drunk, Jason Smith, not long after the birth of her daughter. Jason was a criminal and a drunkard, but not a bad person. He did his best to care for his family in the only way he knew how: by stealing from those more fortunate than himself. He often stole little trinkets for Lacey and was the one who first discovered her powers and taught her how locks worked. As she grew, he began to take her on more and more jobs with him. She became his beautiful assistant and was the only reason he was successful enough to actually buy a small house and make sure his wife was well taken care of.
Lacey's 'father' was killed when she was 16, leaving her and her mother with no way to support themselves. Marianne had been friends with Maeve prior to her marrying Jason, and Maeve insisted on taking in the girl and making sure she was well cared for. Lacey joined the Wardens after she turned 18. She uses lock picks to pretend she is picking locks normally even though she does it with her gramarye.
In the wardens, she met and married Mark Cartwick. The two of them worked as partners and became well known as a team.
Mark was killed during an ambush on one of their missions. Lacey refuses to tell the whole story to anyone else (save for Sebastian Arcturis , who she gave permission to explain to those who needed to know) and will say only that her husband never should have died. She clearly blames herself. They had only been married for two years. She gave birth to her son, Mark Junior, 6 months later.
She took a year off to care for her son, but now that he is older she often leaves him with his grandparents while she is out working.
