. S c r e a m i n g. Yelling. Cries. Loudness. Crashing. The sounds echoed within her mind with such an eery haunting. Sounds of metal against metal clashing loudly together. Sounds of rumbling hooves of horses beating against the ground. Fire crackling, buildings crumbling and falling.
Corpses decorated the ground in such a disturbing, fearful sight. Ships sunk. The citizens were running to safety, fearing for their lives.
And there he was . . . The smoke slithered heavily within the air, clouding the vision, allowing her to see him drop to his knees and fall to the ground, eyes slipping shut.
Nemesis woke up with a loud gasp as she sat straight up in her bed. Darkness surrounded her and she felt such a heavy pressure against her chest. She could not see anything, but she could feel herself gasping to catch her breath. Her hands had begun to shake as she pushed the blankets from her body and slid out of bed. The cold stone floor shocked the bare skin of her feet as she walked over to the window and brushed back the curtains, looking out. Avalendor was still at peace. Though it would not be long until that changed.
Lips parted and she spoke quietly to herself. "I knew this would happen. . . Yet I became weakened and allowed for it to come ..." Her head leaned back, resting against the wall by the window and her eyes slipped shut as hands lowered to rest upon her stomach. She could already feel it within her, though it was much too soon for even a healer to discover it.
She felt a small piercing pain within her chest, and her eyes stung, threatening to produce tears, though she willed herself not to cry. She would do no such thing. At least not ever in front of another person, for as long as she could live. She had made that mistake with Brennus--had allowed him to get too close, allowed him to know and understand her. And now she would pay for all of it.
The rumors had gone through Avalendor between them. Were they involved with one another? Yes. For once, the rumors were correct. And though she never told him, or anyone else, Nemesis felt something for Brennus. She strangely felt connected to him, and because of that, it had been so easy for her to just let go and give in to him. How had it happened? She had despised him for so long, from the day she met him and even still today, she did. But there was something that made her want to see him. To have that life and future she never had with her former husband. This thing they called love? She somewhat wanted to learn if it really existed.
She felt herself slowly slide down against the wall until she was down, with knees bent upward and elbows rested down upon her knees as she crouched, leaning against the wall still. Her head was lowered and face burried into her arms. Though she did not want to, she felt herself break apart and the silent sobs escaped her, shaking her body ever so .l i g h t l y .
