Face Claim: Douglas Smith
OOC Name: Magpie/Cassiopeia
CHARACTER NAME: Trout Latimer
AGE: 31
CURRENT RESIDENCE: Tresteria
APPEARANCE: Trout is a tall man (6'3) whose movements are surprisingly graceful for someone with such a striking resemblance to a colt that hasn't yet grown into its long legs. He has permanent dark circles under his eyes which give the impression that he hasn't slept in the last decade, which isn't as much of an exaggeration as perhaps it should be. His hair sticks up every which way no matter what he does to it, so he has long since given up and lets his wild curls do as they please. He is always neatly dressed, however, despite the lingering ink stains on his hands and little imprints on his nose from his reading glasses.
MARITAL STATUS: Unmarried
FAMILY MEMBERS: sister Dove Latimer , Mother - Mary Latimer, Father - John Latimer (Accountant)
POSITION/OCCUPATION: Tutor to the children of Eleesa Demarais
GRAMARYE GIFT (if any): none
PERSONALITY: Trout is an intelligent and hard working young man who is eager to please. He takes every task set before him seriously and will always do his utmost to succeed. He often hyperfocuses on tasks when reading or writing, and may need a physical tap on his shoulder to pull him back to reality. He has an astounding memory for odd facts, and often recalls minor details from past conversations that other people do not.
With his students he is patient and kind, always encouraging them to do the kind of stellar work he knows they are capable of. While always teaching the basics, he works hard to find reading materials that will interest each student individually to encourage a love of learning and reading.
Trout is hyper protective of his sister Dove, and is constantly checking in on her and trying to make sure she is alright. He has warned most of the staff and residents that she interacts with regularly that she is Deaf, and if he ever encounters her in a negative situation, he will immediately jump in to explain. His sister is the reason he became a tutor after teaching her to read and write, and teaching both of them sign language so they could communicate with each other more easily.
LIKES: the smell of books, reading, history, strange facts, black tea
DISLIKES: sudden loud noises, being laughed at, willful ignorance
HABITS: almost always has ink on his hands, rubs his eyes often, likes to be in physical contact with his sister when she is around (hand on her shoulder, holding hands, standing close, something to reassure himself)
SELF IMAGE: Trout is not confident in himself, but he is confident in literature/history. He will happily go on a tangent or correct others and can come off as a know it all. He doesn't think of himself as better than others, however, he just likes to share information.
REPUTATION: Trout is known as kind of an odd fish. (ha!) He's socially a bit awkward, doesn't have much interest in popular culture, and is a horrible dancer. But people know he is also kind and generous, and that if they ever need something from him, he will give it.
HISTORY:
Trout is the son of an accountant, and was being raised to do the same thing, when it became clear that he was absolute garbage at math but had a knack for memorizing poetry, history, and literature. His parents made sure that he was educated on that instead, using a good deal of their money to provide for his education so that he would have a way to make a living later in life.
His younger sister, Dove, was often allowed to sit in on his lessons so long as she was quiet, and she soon gained his love of reading. The two of them would talk for hours about the stories they were reading and make up ones of their own about damsels in distress and daring knights on quests. The two were inseparable.
When Dove fell sick, Trout was constantly at her side, reading to her and bringing her anything she needed. When it became clear one day that she could no longer hear the story he was reading to her, Trout was terrified. The doctor and his parents did everything they could, but Dove never regained her hearing.
Determined to be able to communicate with his sister, Trout set out to learn everything he could about being Deaf. He bought her a small slate and chalk to write with in the beginning, but soon found that there was a whole language of hand gestures that they could use. Together, the two of them learned to sign. Their mother, Mary, learned some basic signs as well, while their father John refused, saying it was too hard.
When Trout became well known enough as a tutor to be requested by the King and Queen for their children, he found a position for Dove as a scullery maid. It was simple enough work, and the other servants could get by communicating with her by simple gestures and pointing at what needed done. She was a hard worker, and she was accepted into the group easily enough.
Trout enjoys working with the princes and is encouraging them to learn about difficult moral dilemmas and ethics, since they will one day hold important roles in the kingdom.
