Face Claim: Madchen Amick
OOC Name: Magpie
CHARACTER NAME: Maeve DeGraff
AGE: 52
CURRENT RESIDENCE (Which land in Elysium will they live?): Teronna
APPEARANCE: Maeve treads a thin line between 'mom shaped' and 'extremely threatening.' She keeps herself in good shape in order to keep up with her husband, her nieces and nephews, and the adopted children that she and her husband have a habit of acquiring. All of them are taller than her, however, seeing as she is only 5'3, so it often takes two of her strides for every one of theirs. Her smile is warm, but she is also the master of a stern look that would make even the strongest of men confess that they'd eaten cookies before dinner. She dresses well and carries herself with easy confidence. Like her husband, it's clear that she knows how to get her way, but she's also a protective presence in the lives of those both in and out of her family.
MARITAL STATUS: Married to Jareth DeGraff
FAMILY MEMBERS: Jareth DeGraff , Camille St. James , Lillia St. James
POSITION/OCCUPATION: Noblewoman
GRAMARYE GIFT (if any): none
PERSONALITY: Maeve may not be able to have her own biological children, but she watches over both her adopted ones and her nieces and nephews with a fierce love; many people wonder how she survived raising such a firey bunch. The answer is that many of them got the fire from her, and she can keep up with the maddest of them. She loves her family dearly and is fiercely protective of them, but she will not pull punches when it comes to discipline or telling them the truth that they need to hear. She makes time for all her children, as well as her nieces and nephews that do not live with her, and even several other young people who she is looking out for. She is aggressively motherly towards anyone whom she feels needs care. It's simply in her nature to be protective of others. Her motto is "do no harm, take no shit, and beg no man pardon."
She and her husband make a formidable duo--she believes in him completely, and while she won't hesitate to call him out if she feels he is being an ass when the two of them are in agreement, they could move mountains.
LIKES: Herbal remedies and poisons, learning, spending time with her husband, children, a good thunderstorm
DISLIKES: being judged unfairly, willful ignorance
HABITS: very affectionate with family--will play with their hair, rub their backs, touch them almost absently, as if she is reassuring herself they are there
SELF IMAGE: Maeve is quite confident in her appearance and abilities despite her age. She is sensitive only about her inability to bear children.
REPUTATION: Maeve is known for being a bit smothering to those who think themselves too good for her. To those who need a friend, a mother, a safe haven, Maeve is a godsend.
HISTORY: Maeve was the daughter of a military man and a formidable homemaker. She had a surprisingly rough and tumble childhood for a noblewoman, which she passed on to her own adopted children, even as she taught them table manners and poise. When her father arranged her marriage to one of his young soldiers, she was angry at first. She and Jareth made a surprising connection, however, and have been inseparable ever since.
Jareth was the one who introduced Maeve to the wardens, and she immediately took to it. She was an excellent undercover operative and information gatherer, and even an assassin when the case called for poisoning. She loved the work--the danger, the sense of purpose and adventure--and she loved working with her husband as her partner. It was good to have a purpose outside the house. But eventually, she and Jareth realized it was time to step back, and let a younger generation take hold.
Better yet, they decided it was time for a family. They had realized early in their marriage that Maeve was unable to bear children. The incident had been a tragedy that nearly destroyed Maeve, but upon recovery she had immediately decided that if she couldn't birth children, she would simply care for those that needed her. What might have been a curse became her new purpose, her reason to be.
She has spent most of the last ten years raising a hoard of children of all ages into a brood of intelligent, courageous, and capable people. She loves each of them with all of her being and would not hesitate to die for any of them, whether they came from her own womb or not. Even with many of them grown up and fending for themselves, she still spends a good deal of her time wrangling them into making sensible decisions, or making sure her husband remembers to eat and sleep in between his plotting sessions in the study.
