PERSONALITY: Rhysand is an intelligent man, despite the fact that he doesn't often speak up without being asked. He is quite detail-oriented and feels the need to have all the information before making a decision about anything, whether it is in battle or in caring for the family estate. He hates last-minute plans, disorganization, and people who argue for fun. When he gets into a conversation, he carefully considers everything he says before he says it, sometimes making people believe that he is slow, or standoffish.
HISTORY:
Rhysand, as the younger son of the oldest son, knew that he would not inherit much from his father, despite his nobility. He knew from a young age that he was meant for the military. That was his life. As a child, this knowledge was the bane of his existence. He acted out in every way he could think of, throwing fits, smashing things, trying to run away, ruining his expensive clothes, on and on. His parents and nursemaid were exhausted. They could barely keep him on track, and no amount of discipline, no threats, no beating, no pleading, could convince him that the military was good for him.
At age 12, his parents knew they were running out of time and hired a private tutor who was rumored to be the best. He knocked sense into Rhysand by challenging him to a game of chess. He taught the boy, little by little, how to outplay his opponents, first at chess, then in a fight, then with military strategy. At age 13, Rhysand should have been sent off to train with the others, but he stayed with his own tutor for a year longer before finally joining the others.
He was a bit of an outcast at first, this quiet boy with the golden hair, but eventually, he found that he could do fine if he didn't expect everyone to be his friend, and just focused on his instructors instead. When the other boys found that he was getting praised by the leaders they idolized, they started to warm up to him a little, trying to learn his secrets. He tried to share with those who were interested, but many were not patient enough to learn the slow methods that had built up Rhysand's strategies.
Rhysand still doesn't get along well with his family--while he has come to accept that he does enjoy his work, it still strikes him as wrong that he wasn't given the opportunity to pursue his own interests, and that by mere chance of birth he was automatically less than his brother Dominic. This is part of the reason he has not spent much time at court--staying in the family home means forcing himself to be polite with them and make small talk. He finds it boring. He wishes he knew more people who actually wanted to have a conversation with him that meant something, not just a flirtation or meaningless chatter.
