PERSONALITY:
Helene is a quiet woman. She is more talkative than her sister, but nonetheless she is a woman who tends to keep to herself. When she is spoken too, she's rather open with her opinions when you're willing to listen.
Helene is an incredibly intelligent woman who is both passionate and quite the silent force to be reckoned with. She is first and foremost her sister's protector and will do whatever she needs to to defend her from their father--or any man for that matter.
Helene couldn't afford to be timid like her sister when they were growing up. She had to be the strong one, and it's turned her into a woman of survival, and made her a very resourceful woman.
She took what her father did to them and instead of shying away, used her hatred against him to fuel herself to be better. She's a prideful woman who wants nothing more than for her little sister to be safe and happy. She's tried to turn herself into being a good role model for Marinette, so she's given herself the confidence and poise of a strong woman. Hoping it will be a positive in her sister's life.
Despite the strong act she puts on, Helene often times questions herself. Wondering if what she does is right, and how she will make it to the next day. She holds herself up a lot of the time, not trusting anyone but herself on who she can rely on. She has several insecurities and often times blames herself for her mothers death. It's something she struggles with to this day.
LIKES :: Singing, seeing her sister smile, flowers, gardening, experimenting with herbal remedies, laughing, not having any worries, hard work, ships, adventure stories, reading, day dreaming of a different life, tart treats, ribbons, secretly enjoys pants, loves potatoes and gravy, the rain, the color red
DISLIKES :: Her Father, The Hewitts, Formal events that she has to attend with her father, abusers, liars, being touched when she hasn't given permission. Bug’s who infest her flowers, completely dark room, prunes, stale bread.
HISTORY:
Helene is the oldest of two daughters born to Katherine and David Roquefort. Her parents married young--her mother had been the favorite daughter of a wealthy nobleman who fell head over heels for a man who, while technically noble, had a much lower status than she. Her father tried to persuade her otherwise, but couldn't bear to break her heart. She and David were soon married, and her father provided for them to have a very nice life, even supporting her husband's mining and jewelry business ambitions.
To the outer world all was well, but within the home, things quickly went sour. While David was a charming man, his tempestuous nature soon revealed itself to be dangerous. He flickered rapidly between extremely demonstrative affection and a violent temper. Katherine was afraid of him, but there was nothing she could do other than try desperately to please him. It was into this tenuous situation that her first daughter, Helene, was born.
Katherine's father was not entirely aware of the situation, but he let her and her baby stay with him as often as he could, spoiling both of them. David was furious at his wife for spending so much time away, however, and put an end to the visits. Shortly after, her father died of a sudden illness, leaving her with only David to depend upon. Two years later, their second child, Marinette, was born.
David continued to treat his wife terribly, although she did not allow him to physically harm the children. She preferred to spend time with them herself, rather than allow a nurse to raise them. This soon became impossible, however, as she was constantly injured thanks to her husband's abuse. She spent as much time with her girls as he would allow, though. The three were incredibly close.
When Helene was twelve, her mother suffered from a 'fall down the stairs' from which she never recovered. With Katherine gone, David's manipulation and abuse turned to his daughters. He was significantly less physical with them than he was with his wife, but that didn't stop him from terrorizing them. Both girls learned to avoid their father as much as possible, but Helene took the brunt of his anger when she could to protect her sister. Taking the brunt of her fathers anger has left both mental and physical scars on Helene. Her most noticeable scar is on her back from when he gave her a lashing when she was sixteen. Others include a gash on her forearm when she fell on broken glass, and her leg.
As adults, Helene and Marinette took on the duties of woman of the house, managing servants, planning dinners, etc. When Helene was forced to marry Stephen Hewitt and leave her sister behind, the marriage was a good one in terms of Helene marrying a wealthy man that would benefit her family. However Stephen was just another version of her father, if not worse. He was sweet at first, in fact Helene thought he might be the first man to treat her right, but she was horribly wrong. The first time she did something he didn't agree with he went into a blind rage and beat her. It took her two weeks before she was fully recovered and in that time she told herself she would NOT become her mother, and that she had enough abuse from men. On the outside she made it seem like she had forgiven Stephen, and he seemed to believe it, and things fell into a comfortable routine for the two. However, his abuse continued until one day he collapsed in the market, and was rushed home. Helene did her duty of playing the concerned wife and Stephen fell ill. For months his condition continued and he grew weaker and weaker until he was bedridden. Helene continued to run the house, and play the concerned wife, but on the inside she took sick pleasure in watching Stephen suffer. They were only married for a year a half before he died. They had no children, and the estate was passed to Helene.
Helene invited Marinette to live with her. Giving the excuse to their father she was a grieving widow who would do quite well with her sister so close so she could heal. It's been six months since Stephen passed, and talk has begun to spread to Helene that if she wishes to keep Stephen's lands, she will have to marry. Faced with her knew challenge, Helene is determined to keep her former husbands lands and her sister safe from their father's reach, but in order to do so, she'll have to find a suitable man that will have to gain her trust, and maybe...just maybe....her heart.
FACTS ::
- Helene was born the oldest daughter to David and Katherine Roquefort. From an early age she was subjugated to abuse, mostly witnessing her mother get physically and emotionally abused by her father until she was 12. After her mother passed away, Helene became the subject of David’s abuse, up until she finally married.
- Helene has scars from her father's abuse, the most noticeable are her back where she has lash marks from when she was sixteen, and David found out how she spent her free time. On the outer side of her left forearm there is a four inch scar from when she fell on broken glass, as well as other resembling scars on her left leg from some of the deeper cuts.
- Helene blames herself for her mother's death, because if not for her, she feels like her mother would still be here and not have fallen down the stairs.
- Not affording to be timid, Helene forced herself to become strong to face whatever her father decided to throw at her and her sister. Becoming her sister's protector, there's nothing Helene wouldn’t do for Marinette, especially if it affects her safety.
- As a teenager, Helene would sneak away and spend her free time down at the docks. Often disguising herself from a noblewoman, so no one would notice her. She spent time listening to the sailors as they sang, when one day one of the older crew members caught her watching them and mouthing the words to their songs. His name was Elliot, and made Helene come and learn the words properly. She had found her happy place for a time among the sailors. She waa a feisty one as they called her, and after much persistence, they finally allowed her to help them on the ship. It wasn’t long before Helene knew a ship like the back of her hand.
- She would get sad when the sailors would embark on their adventures, but would get excited for their return to hear the stories of their new adventures. When her father caught her one day coming home from the docks dressed how she was, he had taken her out back and lashed her until she’d passed out. The entire time she’d forced herself not to cry out from pain, but eventually she couldn’t bare the pain anymore, and wept.
- It was weeks before Helene eventually went back to her happy place, and she was even more careful then she had been before.
- After much persistence, Helene convinced Eliot to teach her how to use a rapier and cutlass. She was a quick learner took to it like a second skin. She doesn’t practice as much as she used to, but she still remembers the drills he made her go through.
- Helene was twenty-five when she had her arranged marriage with Stephen Hewitt. He was a wealthy merchant that would assist in her father's jewelry and mining ambitions. For once, Helene thought she could be happy with Stephen. He was kind, charming, and treated her like a queen. She genuinely thought she could love the man.
- Helene’s visits to the sailors had to change as she grew older, and both parties were sad about the development, but she would visit when she could. Especially with Old Elliot. When Stephen learned one evening, as he was told by a friend of his that they had thought they’d seen Helene on one of the ships, she’d confessed it was her, and indulged him into that part of her past. He’d been quiet before he requested that she stop. Not wanting to give up something that made her happy and not seeing why she couldn’t just go and visit her old friends, the two had gotten into their first argument.
- Stephen surprised her, suddenly lashing out with unbridled rage that she wouldn’t bend to his will, and he beat her. Far worse than her father ever had. Helene was bedridden for nearly two weeks until her injuries healed, and at that time Stephen had profusely apologized. But Helene’s mind had been changed about the man. Especially after what Stephen had made her lose.
- In the following months Stephans behavior became more abusive, blaming Helene for causing his hand when in some cases, she hadn’t done anything to deserve it. Still, she played the ever loving wife, but what Stephen didn’t know, was Helene was slowly poisoning him. She’d taken up gardening as a hobby to hide the fact she was actually studying various poisons that could be created to slowly kill a person.
- They’d been married for almost a year well Stephen collapsed in the market, and for months his health slowly dwindled down until he eventually died. Seeming to have died from whatever illness had taken him.
- It’s been 6 months since Stephens death, and Helene has been the happiest she’s ever been. Marinette currently lives with her so she doesn’t have to live with their father.
- The Hewitts have decided that if Helene wants to keep Stephen’s lands, then she must remarry or else her home will go to their son Clarence.
