Yeah, I've been living in the state of dreaming
Living in a make-believe land
Living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming
Face Claim: Rebecca Hall
OOC Name: Magpie
CHARACTER NAME: Marinette Roquefort
AGE: 25
CURRENT RESIDENCE: Tresteria
APPEARANCE: Marinette is a tall, thin woman, who looks nervous or afraid almost at all times. Her hazel eyes are observant, always assessing the behavior of those around her. She has long, almost curly brown hair, which she prefers to wear down when possible, but wears up when attending events. She dresses modestly and in dark/muted colors, not eager to draw attention to herself or highlight her features. An observer paying close attention would notice that Marinette holds herself in a way designed to take up as little space as possible and flinches when touched unexpectedly.
MARITAL STATUS: Single
FAMILY MEMBERS: Father: David Sister: Helene Hewitt
POSITION/OCCUPATION: Noblewoman
GRAMARYE GIFT: none
PERSONALITY: Marinette is an unusually quiet woman unless prompted to speak. When she does speak up, however, she demonstrates level-headed intelligence and a compassionate heart. Having grown up in an abusive household, Marinette finds it difficult to see past the ideas her father drummed into her: that she is stupid, that she is ugly, and that she is worthless. She is trying to gain confidence and independence, with the help of her sister Helene's insistence that her father is a treacherous liar, but it's no simple task.
Because of her father's unpredictable moods, Marinette is very sensitive to the emotions and expressions of those around her and quickly becomes distressed if people around her are shouting. She has a tendency to assume things are her fault and will seek to solve the problem as quickly as possible.
i am afraid that if i open myself
i will not stop pouring.
(why do i fear becoming
a river. what mountain
gave me such shame.)
LIKES: fairy tales, sleeping in late, the sound of rain on the roof, hot tea, stained glass, purring cats
DISLIKES: shouting, the sound of breaking glass, being treated roughly, being touched without warning
HABITS: constantly anxious, likes to keep her hands busy, prefers to avoid attention
SELF IMAGE: Her father's abuse has had a heavy effect on Marinette's self-esteem. She does not see herself as attractive or worthy of attention. She has no expectation that she will ever find love, and believes that if she does get married it will be her father's choice and not her own.
REPUTATION: Marinette has little to no reputation of her own, she is mainly recognized as part of a pair with her sister Helene Hewitt or as her father's daughter.
HISTORY:
Marinette is one of two daughters born to Katherine and David Roquefort. Her parents married young--her mother had been the favorite daughter of a wealthy nobleman who fell head over heels for a man who, while technically noble, had a much lower status than she. Her father tried to persuade her otherwise, but couldn't bear to break her heart. She and David were soon married, and her father provided for them to have a very nice life, even supporting her husband's mining and jewelry business ambitions.
To the outer world, all was well, but within the home, things quickly went sour. While David was a charming man, his tempestuous nature soon revealed itself to be dangerous. He flickered rapidly between extremely demonstrative affection and a violent temper. Katherine was afraid of him, but there was nothing she could do other than try desperately to please him. It was into this tenuous situation that her first daughter, Helene, was born.
Katherine's father was not entirely aware of the situation, but he let her and her baby stay with him as often as he could, spoiling both of them. David was furious at his wife for spending so much time away, however, and put an end to the visits. Shortly after, her father died of a sudden illness, leaving her with only David to depend upon. Two years later, their second child, Marinette, was born.
David continued to treat his wife terribly, although she did not allow him to physically harm the children. She preferred to spend time with them herself, rather than allow a nurse to raise them. This soon became impossible, however, as she was constantly injured thanks to her husband's abuse. She spent as much time with her girls as he would allow, though. The three were incredibly close.
When Marinette was ten, her mother suffered from a 'fall down the stairs' from which she never recovered. With Katherine gone, David's manipulation and abuse turned to his daughters. He was significantly less physical with them than he was with his wife, but that didn't stop him from terrorizing them. Both girls learned to avoid their father as much as possible, but Helene took the brunt of his anger when she could to protect her sister. Due to this, Marinette sees her sister as her protector and is much more at ease when she is around.
As adults, Helene and Marinette took on the duties of the woman of the house, managing servants, planning dinners, etc. When Helene was forced to marry and leave her behind, Marinette was terrified. She spent as much time as possible alone in her room reading or sewing, anything to stay out of her father's way. He almost seemed to forget she existed, so long as the house ran smoothly enough that he did not need to think of it. Even the littlest mistake--the sheets not being replaced the day he wanted them, or not being prepared for unexpected guests--would send him into a fury.
When Helene's husband passed away and she invited Marinette to come to stay with her, she was beyond relieved--she actually wept. She immediately took her sister up on the offer and has been slowly learning what it is like to live somewhere she is not constantly terrified. She worries, however, that if her sister does not marry soon, she'll be forced to return to life as David's punching bag.
She may be persuaded to marry as well, especially if her father were persuaded to force her. She is generally afraid of men on top of her abysmal self-esteem, so she will not easily select one for herself.
