ALEXANDRIA:
There was a tightness in Alexandria’s chest that didn’t seem to go away since she received the letter from King Edward. Aralore was in no condition to host guests and it made her beyond nervous. Either the King would think they have done nothing with his funds to fix the kingdom and refuse to help any further, or he would understand the severity of what had happened in Aralore and continue to fund their efforts to restore it. Not only had the kingdom been left in ruins, but the casualties had been substantial.
She was becoming very sleep deprived in the past couple of weeks--though that was not far from the norm for Alexandria. But now, how could she sleep with the thought of her kingdom, once again, hanging in the balance of someone’s opinion? She hated this feeling of needing to rely on someone to help her, or for feeling like she was under someone’s control. She was stronger than that, she was a Queen, but why couldn’t she fix Aralore on her own? It was more than she could endure alone, unfortunately— so here she was... Under someone else’s control and everything hung in the balance of this visit. King Edward hadn’t been to Aralore before— he merely agreed to help under Nemeris’ persuasion and Alex’s agreement to make his brother her King. Aric had tried backing out of the agreement himself, trying to convince Edward that it was unnecessary— but the king wouldn’t have it. Was this why he was coming? So many thoughts ran through Alexandria’s mind, keeping her awake at night more so than usual. What if she could convince Edward that Aric did not need to marry her? She wanted him to be happy…And what if he truly did not want to marry her? But then there was that moment where they had almost kissed… She couldn’t get that out of her mind— the way he looked at her..the way he held her. And what would have happened if they did kiss, if they weren’t interrupted?
In the weeks that had gone by, between all the planning, setting up and prepping the kingdom, Alexandria had managed to somewhat avoid Aric. At least avoid being alone with him again. Though whenever she did see him, she felt her cheeks flush with color; felt those knots tighten in her stomach, and stumbled with her words. Though, she couldn’t help but smile in those moments. She couldn’t explain the newfound feelings she had for him, but something was there.
The Tresterians would be arriving any day now, and most of the preparations were done around the castle. Alexandria found herself pacing around the castle, checking after everything, fixing little things here and there. She was alone, then, in the small banquet room that had been set for the guest list Cassandra put together for her. She truly was beginning to appreciate that woman and all of her help with putting all of this together. Honestly, Alexandria probably couldn’t have pulled this off without her. She would need to thank her and Aric (for suggesting asking for her help), after all of this was over. After this was over… Alexandria couldn’t wait for it to be over.
CASSANDRA:
The Duchess couldn’t literally help rebuild a wall, but she could certainly throw a party! Even a simple gathering such as this one. When the queen asked for her assistance, she jumped right into the opportunity without question. It was the perfect distraction for her, and with Henry constantly being ill almost every other day, she was desperate for anything to do. Edward was a complicated man, so Alexandria’s nervousness was justified. It was certainly not the end of the world, but even Cassandra understood why the queen was so distressed over it.
Everything really did ride on what her dear cousin thought of Aralore’s progress.
When she entered the banquet hall to check on things, the last thing she expected to see was Alexandria herself. “Oh!” she softly exclaimed. “Your Majesty, I’m sorry. I did not know that you were- oh my, these are wrong!” In the middle of her apology, she noticed the helpers had put out the incorrect flowers upon the long table.
Tutting in annoyance, she simply began to swap them out for the other white flowers that were currently used in the small decor vases in the room. Those would look much better. Not to mention, they weren’t as tall so the guests could actually see each other from across the table.
When she was done, she stepped back to have a look at her work with a smile. “Yes, much better.”
Bright eyes once again regarded Alexandria, rolling her eyes softly at herself for the mild distraction. “How are you holding up?” The woman looked near death, most likely not sleeping by the darkness under her lovely eyes. Cassandra couldn’t fully understand what was at stake, so she didn’t try to pretend to know.
ALEXANDRIA:
Cassandra’s voice startled Alexandria, causing her to spin around to face her. She forced a smile and was about to open her lips to tell her no apology was needed, but Cassandra was off fixing the flowers before she could say anything. Alexandria moved to help her with swapping out the flowers until that was finished. Yes, that did look much better, honestly. Sapphire eyes looked back to Cassandra once they were finished. “Oh, I’m fine.. “ She waved her hand dismissively. Despite her exhausted appearance, which probably gave it away, Alexandria wasn’t about to admit how much of a mess she was, especially not to Cassandra. And before she could question her again, Alexandria spoke again, “How are you doing? I really haven’t had a chance to thank you, yet, for everything you have done here… This room looks gorgeous… Thank you for your help.” She smiled and glanced around once again. “I don’t think I could have done this without you.”
One thing about Alexandria, was she always showed gratitude for everything anyone ever did for her. Even the servants, Alexandria always thanked them and made them feel that they were appreciated. Perhaps it was her upbringing of being a servant herself, and living a commoner’s life. She never truly acted as if she were any sort of royalty. Oftentimes, she even forgot she was someone of any importance.
The two women were completely different from one another, but Alexandria admired Cassandra for her strength and seeming like she did not care what others thought of her. If she did care, she at least pretended she didn’t, very well. She hadn’t really gotten much of a chance to get to know Cassandra in the time she had resided in Aralore, mostly due to the lack of time or never really running into her. It was something she hoped she could change. “Actually, if you wouldn’t mind, do you think you could help me with one more thing?” She flashed a smile and let out a light laugh. “I’m not really sure what I should wear to this event with the king. Do you think you could help me pick a dress out?” She had a slight feeling that Cassandra would jump for as much joy for the task that she did with planning for the banquet.
CASSANDRA:
She slowly walked around the table, idly adjusting things here and there that truly didn’t need to be. But the queen’s question was one she wasn’t sure how to answer, so she glossed over it. For once, it wasn’t meant to be in a rude way. “It was my pleasure,” she answered her. “I’m not good with many things, but I certainly know what my cousin likes and expects.” Her voice held a very mild tone of animosity, perhaps it was annoyance. It was something she didn’t let linger for very long. “Besides, someone told me that I should...do more in the ways of showing my respect, if I wish to receive it in return.” That person, oddly enough, had been Alexandria’s brother. As insufferable as he had been on the ship during their trip back to Aralore, he had made some valid points.
Ones that she still wasn’t so keen on letting him know she agreed upon. And he most likely never will, regardless of how he had helped her the other night.
Fortunately, she didn’t need to dwell on any of that for very long, because the queen seemed to ask the magical question. Cassandra’s face lit up, her green eyes widening and filling with excitement. It had been such a long time since she had been able to converse and gossip with another woman, and this would be the perfect opportunity. Not to mention, picking out a dress for the queen? It was one of her favorite pastimes.
“Could I? Absolutely!” Maybe she was a little too giddy about this, but it simply couldn’t be helped. The Duchess was rounding about the table to loop an arm through Alexandria’s, already escorting her from the banquet hall. Whether she meant tonight or not, Cassandra was all set to look through dresses this evening.
ARIC:
The Tresterian prince was on his way down the hall as the two women exited the room. He was immediately stopping short to avoid crossing paths, and murmured an apology for almost barreling into them. Truthfully, he didn’t quite know where he was going in such a hurry, but now he almost felt as though he needed to go even faster. “My apologies. I wasn’t looking where I was going.”
CASSANDRA:
“Where are you off to in such a hurry, cousin?” she asked. He had been acting extra weird for a few days now, she noticed, but she had been polite enough not to ask him about it. Perhaps she should, before the banquet just be sure he wasn’t going to ruin it. Cassandra understood that Aric didn’t always get along with his brother, but this was a very important occasion. “And you will be sure to dress accordingly for this dinner, won’t you?” She grinned lightly with that tease...but she was also very serious.
ARIC:
Those dark eyes drifted from the queen to his obnoxious albeit lovely cousin. At least she was keeping him from awkwardly wondering what to say to Alexandria. So, instead of answering Cassandra’s first inquiry, he quickly skipped to the second one, letting out a gentle sigh. “Yes, of course.”
ALEXANDRIA:
That same reaction displayed on Cassandra’s features as they had when Alexandria asked for her help in planning the banquet. She couldn’t help but smile and let out a small laugh of amusement. But before she could say anything, Cassandra had hold of her arm and was pulling her out of the room. She didn’t necessarily mean this evening, but now was a good of time as any.
But as they left, there was Aric, nearly about to crash into them. She let go of Cassandra to instantly smooth out her hair of any unruly mess, to try and look somewhat presentable aside from her exhausted and worn out appearance. She forced a slight smile at him and caught herself admiring him briefly, before she turned her gaze to Cassandra, her fingers now brushing out the wrinkles on her dress. She tried not to look at Aric again, but when he heard his exasperated reply, she glanced his way again, grinning almost that same teasing grin as Cassandra did. “Wouldn’t want the king to think we have influenced you in any way, now, would you?” Her voice was laced with thick sarcasm that she hoped Aric would pick up on.
Her voice seemed foreign to her in that moment, as she nervously played with the folds of her dress. She hadn’t been able to speak much to Aric since that night, but having Cassandra next to her, kind of helped now, otherwise, she would have been a stuttering, blubbering mess.
She turned back to Cassandra, “I may need you to convince my brother to dress appropriately, too…If it comes from me, it will just be nagging...And he might revolt… And we all remember what happened at the last event...” Alexandria’s voice trailed off and she suddenly got a wave of anxiety feel as if it was strangling her. She hadn’t even thought about how Orin would act with the king here, and suddenly, she hoped he hadn’t gotten his invite. “...Perhaps I should have a talk with him anyway…” There was a twinge of nervousness in her voice, as she started to think of the worst that could happen with her brother and king Edward.
CASSANDRA:
Fortunately for the two, the Duchess hadn’t picked up on the awkwardness that created an instant tension in the air between them. Not yet, anyway. At the back of her mind, however, she had noted how much the queen was fidgeting. A question for another time.
Those eyes narrowed upon her cousin with his tired reply. She was always pestering him about such things, but if she didn’t do it, he wouldn’t much care and look absolutely horrendous! It took her several weeks to get him to shave the bird’s nest off of his face, something he thought was a beard. Granted, he had been in mourning, but she had to start somewhere to help get him to take care of himself again. And, ever since, he’d been keeping it perfectly trimmed and well kept.
Cassandra was quite aware that her pretended to ignore her...but he listened to her on occasion. It was evident in some ways.
Her smile broadened when Alexandria joined in on the tease. Oh, she was really beginning to like this queen the more and more she crawled out of her shell. She was still soft spoken, but Cass could tell she had a good head on her shoulders. It was what Aralore needed, and perhaps why she was trying desperately to help out.
It was strange, really. She normally couldn’t have cared less about a land that wasn’t her own home. Now, she feared that Edward would make her go back to Tresteria, and she wasn’t ready to.
Green eyes were quick to shift towards the queen then when she mentioned her brother. The laugh that escaped her throat was pure amusement, as though she thought Alexandria was kidding. She also noted where her mind must have been wandering to, and Cassandra tried to keep the subject light and playful. “Oh, right, because your brother would listen to me. I’m fairly certain he wanted to throw me overboard, Majesty.” If she had been serious, they would have known. But the lightness of her tone made it clear that she was joking and simply making a point.
Even if, perhaps, she really did think the thought crossed Orin’s mind once or twice. It was almost hard to remember after the other night. How strange that had been.
Reaching over to take Alexandria’s hand, hearing the nervousness in her voice. “Be assured, everything will be fine. And all will be on their best behavior.” There was heavy assurance in her tone, and she glanced sidelong to her cousin in slight warning. “I will make sure of it.” Aric and Orin be warned. She would knock them both upside the head in front of everyone if she had to!
ARIC:
He was sure that anyone could pick up on the tension. It was weighing down on his shoulders and nearly suffocating him. At first, he couldn’t look the queen in the eye, but he couldn’t help but allow his gaze to drift up slowly and just enough to watch how she fidgeted, smoothing out the creases of her dress, or her hair that she probably thought was such a mess. Even if it were, she managed to remain lovely in her exhausted state, because she was more real in that moment. She wasn’t hiding behind a glorified facade. Aric loved his cousin dearly, but he knew the false mask she often wore. He just didn’t know why.
It was when Alexandria’s lilting voice joined in with Cassandra’s did his eyes finally rise up further to meet her gaze. He appeared surprised at first before a corner of his mouth curled up in the faintest of grins; his eyes crinkling at the corners, happy to see her smiling and joking.
“Oh, wonderful. I need to deal with two of you now…” his gruff voice sounded softly amused.
It would seem they had been avoiding each other for days now, and he couldn’t figure out if it was intentional or not. For his part, he probably was. Whenever he thought of going to her to speak with her, to apologize for whatever he may have done that not (or nearly did), he stopped himself. Alexandria had instigated it, he was certain, but even still. He felt strangely guilty.
He wondered then, if Cassandra wasn’t near, if he would have tried saying something right there in the hallway. The last thing he wanted was for her to think ill of him, or that he didn’t respect her.
When she was growing nervous about her brother, he took a step forward as if to console her, yet paused as he thought better of it. “I’m sure he will be fine,” he tried to ease her worry. He hoped, after what happened at the ball, that Orin would know better. But it wasn’t his place to say anything.
ALEXANDRIA:
Orin did march to the beat of his own drum. Whether she spoke with him, or Cassadnra did, he would still do his own thing, and may even protest the more he was nagged about something. Alexandria didn’t know why she even suggested it, but with how Cassandra reacted, perhaps it came across as a joke--even though she was half serious.
She, too, hoped that Orin would know better after his escapades at the ball. She had spoken with him, made amends and moved on. He had agreed to go rescue Cassandra, and thankfully, hadn’t thrown her overboard. Her head shook lightly at her remark and she let out a slight laugh.
She was admiring the way Aric’s eyes squinted when he smiled, that she barely noticed Cassandra took her hand again, preventing her from continuously fumbling with her skirt. Eyes diverted back to her then, and she offered a smile at Cassandra's reassurance. In the corner of her eye, she noticed Aric took a step towards her but then hesitated, speaking instead, causing her glance to shift once again. Had she pushed him away, that he did not wish to come near her now? Or was it that he did not want her close to him again? She studied him, her mind spinning with all the possible thoughts that Aric was avoiding her, and why. She was so rude to push him away that night. Was he angry with her?
There was an awkwardly long silence until Alexandria snapped herself out of her thoughts and nodded. “Yes, I hope so…” She offered Aric a smile before she turned to Cassandra. “Shall we continue?” She needed to get out of this hallway and away from Aric right now, the awkwardness and tension was killing her. How would they move past this now? Things had been going well, it seemed-- but now there was something off and Alexandria didn’t know how to mend it just yet.
CASSANDRA:
Now she was beginning to realize that there was something strange going on with the queen. Her cousin was usually always quiet, so there was nothing new there...but Alexandria was extra fidgety the moment he showed up. Was she blushing or were her eyes deceiving her?
A small devilish smile was curling up the corner of her mouth, but she didn’t say anything to make matters more awkward. Were it anyone else, she might have teased, yet this was the queen of Aralore. Cassandra needed to have a little bit more manners than that.
She also knew it would just annoy Aric and that was the last thing she wanted to do. For once.
“Yes, let’s go find you something fabulous to wear to dinner,” she answered her, but those green eyes flickered to Aric. Just because she couldn’t tease the queen, couldn’t mean she couldn’t look at him with slight insinuation in her voice. Her smile widened, relinking arms with Alexandria as they walked passed the broody man, “Have a good night, cousin.”
ARIC:
Were someone to ask what was wrong, he wouldn’t know how to answer. He didn’t really know if he should be angry or embarrassed or if he should even care in general. She had pushed him away, and yet, Aric couldn’t blame her. It was stupid, so perhaps the blame was on him. The real question was, how did he feel about it?
Dark eyes were blinking, trying to push away his confusion when his bubbly cousin was speaking. He had been watching Alexandria but caught Cassandra’s gaze when she purposely regarded him.
What was she up to?
Lips parted to inquire about it, but she was already whisking the queen away. “Uh, right...goodnight, Cass.” A pause, and he bowed his head slightly as Alexandria walked by. “Majesty,” he murmured lowly. His attention rested on her for a few seconds longer before he forced himself to turn and continue in the opposite direction down the hallway.
ALEXANDRIA:
Alexandria held onto Cassandra's arm as they walked down the halls of the castle towards her chambers. She was quiet as her mind lingered on Aric and what she should say to him later. They couldn't act this way in front of his brother. Or would anyone even notice?
Once they reached her room, Alexandria let go of Cassandra to open the door to let her in. She wasn't exactly sure what she was about to get into, but she was grateful for the assistance.
CASSANDRA:
What the queen was about to get into was fun. It seemed like she could use it. She could use something to take her mind off of all the stress. On their way towards Alexandria's chambers, she requested from a passing servant that some wine be brought to them before she stepped into the room. Once the door was shut, Cassandra whirled around to face her. "So," she said. "Ideally we'd have made a new dress for the occasion, but considering this is all last minute..." Trailing off, keen eyes were already spotting the queen's wardrobe. Hopefully she didn't mind the Duchess just opening it up right then and there. She had asked for her help, after all. "You would look lovely in green, even ravishing in red." Cassandra was all smiles. She wasn't using the usual fake lilting tone she did when conversing with others; this was actually genuine. "However-" A pause, she turned to glance over her shoulder at the queen, her lips curled in a wry grin. "Aric loves blue." Yes, she knew something was up.
ALEXANDRIA:
She didn't mind that Cassandra helped herself to her wardrobe, she did, of course ask for help, and Alexandria wasn't one to get too possessive over her things. A smile graced her lips as she watched her begin to look through her things and list of the colors that she should wear. Green was one of her favorite colors to wear. Red, maybe too bold for this type of event. But that last suggestion made a slight nervous blush flush her cheeks. She moved closer towards her wardrobe and Cassandra and tried to act as casually calm as she could. "Oh, is it?" She shrugged slightly . "What about the king? Am I supposed to be dressing to impress him? Or Aric?"
The queen could try, but that smile wasn't leaving the Duchess' lips. She continued looking through the array of gowns Alexandria had (which was far fewer than she would have expected, yet this was coming from a woman who had a dress for every single, little occasion), not believing this sudden new calm. A part of her wondered if Aric had done something stupid, because that broody bastard had a tendency of making things more difficult than they needed to be. "The real question is, Your Majesty-" she started, drawing out a simple gown of a dark green, despite what she said. But she didn't seem too thrilled with it as she held it up against the queen to imagine it on her. "Which one is it that you truly want to impress?" Was there too much mischief in her eyes? Maybe. Logically, it should be Edward since a lot was riding on this gathering, but Cass simply couldn't help herself.
ALEXANDRIA:
She stood by Cassandra, regarding the simple green dress the same way she had. It didn't fit the occasion and she shook her head. She placed her hands on her hips as Cassandra pushed back. That was a tricky question. She wasn't sure she was ready to admit her feelings--even to herself. Alexandria fell silent and pondered for a moment. Her voice cracked when she began to speak her response. "I... Probably the King... Though, he is married, so why would he care what I am wearing? But I want to look presentable, like I care that he has come to visit... And..." She trailed off and thought of her words carefully. "Maybe Aric, too... so that maybe he might at least be attracted enough to me to want to marry? Rather than have to... Though, I'm not exactly sure he would care about such things as a pretty dress?"
CASSANDRA:
Tossing the dress over the vanity chair, she continued leafing through the array of gowns in the wardrobe as the queen tried to answer her question. Cassandra didn't fully expect her to, so she was a little surprised when Alexandria tried. It made her smile as she drew out a lovely mauve gown this time. It was almost perfect, and it complimented Alexandria's complexion well, but Cass was still looking for something else. Something beautiful and blue. She wasn't joking about that, which the queen would soon find out.
"It's all a show with Edward, Majesty. Showing your assets wouldn't be for him." Cassandra looked her straight in the eyes, green meeting blue. "Clearly." She giggled softly as she set that gown aside as well before her expression softened a little. "The king will want to know that everything is going according to his plan. Even if it isn't, you need him to believe that it is." She wasn't trying to scare her, but she needed to know honesty. "But, if I may ask-" she began, pausing. For once, she was being hesitant, probably because this was a rather delicate situation on all accounts. "Is that what you think about my cousin? That he isn't attracted?" Cassandra wasn't being pushy, nor was there a glint of mischief in her eyes. If anything, there was gentle concern in those emerald hues, which was such a rarity with her.
ALEXANDRIA:
Her lips parted to comment on the mauve dress being a good option, but Cass was tossing it aside before she could speak of it. She breathed out a slight laugh and smiled, watching her until she spoke again, causing her to laugh out loud. Her hand shot up to her lips to quickly silence herself. Her gaze turned more serious then, as Cassandra explained what the king's intentions were for the visit. But she wanted to know more. Once again, her lips parted to speak, but Cassandra had already moved on with more questions. It took her back slightly and whatever smile was left on her lips, suddenly faded. She shrugged lightly, rubbing the back of her neck nervously. "I...I don't know. I am not overly fancy. Maybe just a bit plain and ordinary looking... I guess I never really thought of anyone being attracted to me for my looks..." Alexandria was being open and honest with Cassandra. She had never been the type to be fake or hide behind something, unless of course, it was to hide her emotions, whenever she could, though she had been horrible at doing that as of late. "Why? Do you think he is?" Her eyes had a bit of a glimmer of hope, then, as she regarded Cass with curiosity.
CASSANDRA:
The mauve dress would be a backup. But there was something far more important to discuss! Alexandria just had to keep up. It was her turn to laugh, though, at how the queen saw herself. Sure, she didn't look like the elegant, well put together woman in this current moment, but that didn't mean anything. Even Cassandra could look passed that! "Oh, sweetheart..." she murmured with soft amusement, but it was not in a mocking sort of way. Moving those dresses off the chair now, she led Alexandria to sit down in front of the vanity mirror. Hands rested upon the woman's shoulders as she leaned down to look at her through the reflection with a sincere smile she didn't often share with many people. "I'll be honest- you look exhausted right now," she added. It was meant to lighten the mood a little, perhaps even get Alexandria to laugh again. "But that doesn't matter." Her tone softened again, and it was almost strange how this sincerity was making her feel. She had women she called friends back home, but they were vipers who would sooner stab her in the back. She knew this, because she was the very same way. However, Cassandra didn't feel the need to be on alert in such a way with the queen. "What I definitely know, Majesty, is that he was surprised by you. Pleasantly so. He's just-" How to say this without being cruel? "He's a man. Most of them don't know how to express themselves properly. And he's a broody man, but a good one." Cass would vouch for that. She reached over for the queen's hairbrush, and idly began to brush out those ebon strands.
"He fought Edward from the very beginning, since the King has a habit of choosing less than wanted unions for us." It was obvious she was speaking from experience. That may have sounded cruel, but her marriage to Henry wasn't really one. At least, it wasn't suitable for her, only to Edward's pockets. Ignoring her own problems, she smiled again. "But I haven't heard Aric fight it in quite awhile." Almost leaving it there, she spoke again, unable to help herself. "And I felt that tension before. What in all the world happened?" Hmm, maybe it wasn't her place to ask that. Her chattiness was consuming her now.
ALEXANDRIA:
It had been quite some time that Alexandria had someone brush her hair for her, so she was slightly taken back when Cassandra started to do so, but she did not say anything or stop her. She watched her through the mirror as she spoke, letting out a slight breathy laugh at her mentioning that she looked exhausted. She was. Since she received the letter from Edward, she barely slept. Worse than usual.
Sapphire eyes watched Cass in the mirror as she spoke about Aric and what she knew. A frown etched upon her lips at the mention of Aric not fighting in a while. Had he given up, or given in to all of this because he was tired of fighting? Yet, he had admitted that he went to Edward to fight against enforcing this marriage. And now this was the second time she was hearing that she was a surprise to Aric. What did that even mean? She laughed again, yes he is a man and she knew all too well that most of them did have a hard time expressing themselves properly. "What do you mean, he was surprised by me?"
She intentionally ignored her last question. How could she even begin to explain what happened, when she herself had no idea what happened. Was the tension that noticeable between them? She tried to think of how she could answer that question as she waited for Cassandra to explain what she meant.
CASSANDRA:
She was quick to notice how the queen didn't answer what she was really curious about, but she knew it wasn't her place to pry. Even she didn't have the gall to further ask about it. Her smile never wavered, though, she was happy to explain further. "You surprised us all," she said, but that wasn't the answer Alexandria was looking for. "You are not weak, and you're not afraid to do whatever it takes to ensure the safety of your kingdom. It took him by surprise. I think, perhaps, he expected some meek woman who would grovel at his brother's feet." Setting the brush aside, she gently ran fingers through the queen's hair before playing around with what it might look like up and off her neck. Cassandra tilted her head curiously, her smile broadening as she glanced back to her through the mirror. "I don't think he expected you to be quite so lovely, either." She had seen it on his face, numerous times.
ALEXANDRIA:
She couldn't help but smile as Cass explained what it meant that she surprised them. A laugh escaped her at mention that Aric hadn't expected her to be so lovely. Was she? She was very different than most women who had a royal title. Maybe it was for the fact that she hadn't grown up in a castle, or even knew that she was heir to a throne. She had grown up amongst men and strong women. Though, sometimes, Alex felt that she was a meek woman. "Am I not groveling at the kings feet by having him come here to check up on me and the kingdom? By agreeing to this arrangement simply to get his aid in repairing my kingdom?" She frowned and watched Cassandra through the mirror still. "What is his plan, anyway? You mentioned he would want to know that everything is going according to his plan?" Her brows furrowed in curiosity.
CASSANDRA:
"No," she answered her quickly. "Seeking aide does not make one weak." Cassandra sounded very adamant about that. "Nor is my cousin less like any king needing to check up on his investments." The way she had said this was almost clear that she wasn't looking down upon Aralore, but her own family's behavior. That was probably a first. When Alexandria asked what the plan was, those green eyes found the woman's face, and her own expression sobered up. The Duchess had an inkling, but to speak of it now would hurt the queen or possibly cause unnecessary tension. Edward was a hard man, but Cassandra liked to think that he wasn't a cruel man. He was her cousin, and she should be sticking by him. With a sigh, she answered, "I really do not know. At least, not any more than to know his money and resources have been put to good use." He would probably wonder why the queen and Aric hadn't been wed yet, but the king would simply have to get over that. There had been more pressing matters as of late. What Cass did know was that Aric didn't trust Edward, and that worried her.
ALEXANDRIA:
Despite Cassandra's reassurance, Alex couldn't help but still feel like she was weak and needy, and that maybe she should have found another way to make things work. Or to maybe give in and bring her people to a new kingdom and she step down from being a queen. Go back to her old life where she was just a simple commoner struggling to survive. But it was the fact that she was so different and her people were so happy here, that kept her going--that kept her fighting for them. She had lived in various lands where the rulers were nothing but greedy tyrants. And if Alex had any power at all, she would prevent that from happening. But now here she was, under the thumb of another ruler, threatening to take her land. How could she be so stupid?
A nod of understanding was given to Cassandra, and her face showed nervousness again. She silently wished all of this would go away. She hoped that Edward would see that his investments were being put to good use.
She leaned back in the chair and pulled her knees up to her chest and hugged them. "Aric left Aralore and went to talk with Edward. He did go try to fight against this arrangement... Which worries me that he doesn't want this... I'm sure no one wants to be forced to marry someone..." She knew Cassandra would understand this at least. "He left before you were kidnapped... Came back and his ship wrecked. He was injured and I kept the news from him so he could rest and heal up before rushing to get you. I had sent Orin and Naeva to find you, and he was pretty angry with me.... " She explained to Cassandra what she hoped would answer her question to what had happened between them to cause the tension.
CASSANDRA:
Oh yes, she knew better than most about being forced to marry. Henry was kind to her, but the difference in ages made it impossible for her to live a normal life of a young woman. They couldn't even start a family so had to resort to being eye candy.
Cassandra remained quiet as Alexandria explained, and her brow furrowed in thought. "Is Aric still cross with you?" That had been weeks ago. It hadn't seemed like it in the hall, but she clearly didn't know everything.
ALEXANDRIA:
She shook her head, letting her feet and legs fall back off the chair. "No, I do not believe he is. I think..." She paused briefly, trying to think of her words carefully. They had moved past that and she didn't want to lie to Cassandra and say that was still an issue when it was not. "... I think things are just... Complicated?" She let out a quiet laugh and shrugged her shoulders. "We know very little about each other and we are to be married once the kingdom is restored... I think we are just trying to overcome the awkwardness of it all?" She nodded. Yes, that response made sense to her and she hoped it was believable to Cassandra. "Has he said anything to you about this arrangement?"
CASSANDRA:
She couldn't keep herself from grinning. "Relationships are always complicated, dear," she said, idly beginning to braid the queen's hair. It seemed to be sort of therapeutic for her at the moment, and Alexandria wasn't protesting. "Any sort of relationship." But she offered her a shrug. "At least you have the time to get to know one another. That's far better than what most couples get." She wasn't trying to be petty or insinuate she had it worse than the queen. No, it was simply truth and hopefully a little light at the end of the tunnel. When asked about Aric, Cass was done with the braid and rested it over the woman's shoulder casually. "Not for awhile, no. He's just been all business with the restoration. I can't even seem to pick on him easily anymore." Again, that was a small attempt at lightening the mood, although it was true. "He's just-" Cassandra paused with a gentle sigh. "I'm sure you know about Maria?"
ALEXANDRIA:
She enjoyed having her hair fussed over and couldn't remember the last time anyone else had touched her hair and braided it for her. She was beginning to cherish this interaction with Cassandra. It gave her hope that perhaps the two could become closer friends. She needed more female friends in her life. People she could talk girly things, like this, with. She laughed at Cassandra admitting that she couldn't pick on Aric easily anymore. But her smile disappeared at the mention of Maria. She nodded slowly. "Yes, he mentioned her to me... I can understand his hesitance towards me, for that reason. I have lost a love, too... in the war. So I get it. Being forced to move on, when you're not exactly over the past..."
CASSANDRA:
Maria was a good woman, and pleasant. Unfortunately, Cassandra hadn't been given the chance to really get to know her. Still, that whole situation had been painful for Aric, and it had taken him awhile to get over it. Perhaps, it wasn't even one could ever get over, but had the capability to move on from.
The Duchess nodded, resting a hand upon Alexandria's shoulder in gentle consolation. Aric hadn't been the only one to lose someone. "I do not think it's so much that he cannot move on-" Cassandra started. She was hesitant to say anything, but honesty was the best policy here. "It's more...that he's afraid to. That it might happen again." This wasn't certain, but she liked to believe she knew her cousin fairly well. It was sad either way.
ALEXANDRIA:
She imagined Aric and what he must have looked like when finding out about his wife and child, and then how his days must have looked following. The image in her head made her want to cry. From what she felt with Aric, from what she knew... He didn't deserve that. She wanted to give him a reason to be happy. Then it hit her. He had admitted to her that she had given him a reason to live. Her eyes actually started to well up and she cleared her throat to try and avoid crying. "I'm afraid too..." Part of the reason Alexandria had agreed to this marriage, was because she didn't want to fall in love again. She just wanted to become unavailable, and if she was locked in any old marriage, then maybe no one else would pursue her. Little did she know, she would be matched up with a good man who she could easily fall in love with.
CASSANDRA:
Her expression immediately softened. She was almost in awe at Alexandria's reaction, and it was in no way mocking of her unshed tears. Perhaps, in some strange way, she wished to know what it was like, to have that ache behind her heart. To feel- what might possibly- be blossoming love. Cassandra moved to knee in front of the queen, taking her hand with the gentlest of smiles. "Well then," she whispered, hoping to sound encouraging. "Why not be afraid together?"
ALEXANDRIA:
Her eyes lifted to meet Cassandra's as she knelt in front of her. Her lips pulled into a soft smile and she squeezed her hand. "Perhaps... But wouldn't that be a miserable sight?" She laughed and shook her head. "What would we do? Sit in a room and stare at one another, afraid to leave because of danger. Afraid to say anything to hurt the other." She laughed again and shrugged. "I am not sure he knows I am afraid. And he has not told me that he is either. I don't really know how he feels about any of this. Because, like you said... He's a man." She smirked and squeezed Cassandra's hand again. "Thank you for talking...and listening to me. It is nice to talk with another woman like this. I've been feeling so isolated since the war..."
CASSANDRA:
She laughed. "If that's how you wish to spend your time with him, I will not judge." A pause, she smirked. "Too much." Cassandra climbed up to her feet, smoothing out the front of her dress. "Honesty is key to a happy marriage, they say," she added, chuckling lightly at herself. In ways, she was a very honest woman...but there were things she would never tell Henry because it would hurt him to hear. "You'll both push through this and find common ground. Or perhaps...something more." Her eyebrows lifted in teasing suggestion as she turned back to that wardrobe, waving Alexandria's thanks away. "It was my pleasure to, Your Majesty. In truth, not many people like me... especially here. So it should be I thanking you."
ALEXANDRIA:
She couldn't help but laugh. That wasn't really how she wished to spend her time with Aric. But she was right, honesty was the key to a lot of things. She grinned and waved Cassandra off at her suggestion of them finding something more.
She frowned, then, at Cassandra admitting that not many liked her, especially in Aralore. "Why do you think that? Have you given anyone a chance to talk or get to know you? You and I have just started talking since planning this banquet... Whom else have you spoken to and did they tell you that they did not like you?" She knew people could be judgemental and she wondered if Cassandra felt judged more than anything. "I like you and hope we can be dear friends..."
CASSANDRA:
Green eyes turned to regard the queen as though she thought the woman was joking. Certainly she had to know what the Duchess was really like? Even if she hadn't been so as of late. Part of this was her own fault, while others did look upon her in disdain for simply being Tresterian. Only now, she didn't blame them.
Lips parted to try and answer her. She almost told the queen that her brother didn't much like her, but that had been on the ship. Cassandra would like to think he tolerated her a bit more now, and the feeling was mutual. She shrugged gently. "I see how they look at me, at Aric...and it's fair, I suppose. I'm not saying that it is not. Nor is it everyone. On the ship after I was rescued, though...I couldn't help but wonder how many of them were resentful for being put at risk even though it hadn't been my fault." The Duchess knew she had a bad habit of rubbing people the wrong way, and not always intentionally.
A small, warm smile curled her lips from Alexandria's following words, and she didn't realize how much she had cared for the queen's opinion of her until then. "I would very much like that, Majesty."
ALEXANDRIA:
She frowned in response to Cassandra's answer, but listened intently. "Though it's not right, and I am sorry my people make you feel that way. But you must understand, our land has been threatened by so much as of late. Part of it is because they are angry with me for agreeing to this union and putting the kingdom at risk again...They don't fully understand all of it. Just afraid, and not trusting."
Alexandria stood up from the chair and walked back to her wardrobe where Cassandra was. She took her hand and offered a smile. "Give it time. I do hope you will stay with us." She didn't fully know her well enough to know what she was really like. And Alexandria was very accepting of others. She tried not to judge on what she did not know. And Cassandra hadn't given her any reason to think poorly of her. Other than that she was sent from Tresteria, and Alex had wondered if it were to spy and send news to Edward, though she would never admit to that belief. She would give Cass a chance until she had a reason not to. Perhaps it was her downfall. She trusted people too easily and was often hurt and used because of it.
CASSANDRA:
The unfortunate thing was, she was supposed to be sending word to Edward about anything that she could find out. Yet, the fortunate thing was, she had stopped weeks ago, just before she was kidnapped. There hadn't been much to even report on to begin with, and Cassandra found no reason for it anymore. She wondered if Edward would scold her for it when she saw him.
She nodded when Alexandria explained the overall thoughts from the kingdom. "I know. It is why I bite my tongue more often than not now. Your brother actually helped me realize this." There had been a time where she wanted these people to despise her, because she thought them inferior. She had once thought her time in Aralore was a waste. It was such a silly and ignorant thought now. She regarded the queen when she had taken her hand, her gentle smile faltering. "Staying is, unfortunately, not up for me to decide." For all she knew, Edward would demand that she and Henry leave with them back to Tresteria. The very strange thing was, she wasn't sure if she even wanted to leave.
ALEXANDRIA:
A look of confusion crept upon her features at the mention of her brother. "Orin did? Really?" She was curious now. She reached for the skirt of a dress hanging in the wardrobe and played with the fabrics between her fingers. "No? Why can't it be up to you?" She raised a brow, glancing to her as if challenging her to make her own decisions in life. To stand up for herself. She shrugged her shoulders, perhaps not fully understanding Cassandra's situation. "Or if you really wish to stay... I am sure the new king of Aralore can demand it so... Or if I were to give you a position in my household?" She suggested several options that would help keep her here if needed. "But that is all entirely up to you..." She smiled at her and looked back at the dress she was holding onto. It was a deep navy colored dress. "So what shade of blue?"
CASSANDRA:
"Believe it or not, he's a bit wise when he isn't being an ignorant ass." Maybe that was a bit too harsh to say, but her tone didn't make it seem so. She even grinned to let the queen know she wasn't trying to be completely disrespectful. Orin had been right about a few things back on that ship, and now she felt like she owed him for the other night for not repeating what she was blubbering about.
Then, she sighed. "It's different...for women of status. It doesn't really apply to you, as a queen. But Edward is my blood, and I have no father or brother to speak of anymore. It's misogynistic, I know, but they make the rules. Henry fills his pockets and offers him aide- I was a pawn to secure that. And I may be his pawn again if something should happen to my husband...though, I fear I may be too old for any man by then." She laughed lightly, but the humor didn't reach her eyes. Alexandria was certainly sweet to offer help in this situation, but Cassandra wasn't sure if it would help...and she didn't want to get her own hopes up. Not knowing how to respond, she turned her attention to the dress, some life sparking back into those green eyes with the question. Drawing out the gown, she held it up against the queen and smiled brightly. "This one, for certain. He won't be able to look away." Cass didn't think she had to explain just whom that was.
ALEXANDRIA:
A burst of laughter escaped her at Cassandra's comment on Orin. This was so true, and even if Cass was being disrespectful, Alexandria would have agreed still. "Yes, he can be wise, helpful, and a lot of great things, when he wants to be..." She loved her brother more than anything, they've had their share of disagreements, but he was always there for her when she needed him. He could be an ignorant ass though.
She listened as Cassandra tried to explain Edward and his decisions. She simply nodded, not wanting to pry any further on it. It wasn't really any of her business, but she wanted to put it out there that she would help if she could, in whatever way needed.
When the dress was placed up against her, she couldn't help but smile. It had been a long while since she had worn this dress--Or maybe she never had a chance to yet, she wasn't certain. She ran her fingers along the fabric and laughed at Cass' comment, glancing at the mirror at herself with the dress against her. It really was a gorgeous dress. "Then it's settled..." She smiled and took the dress, hanging it up in front of the wardrobe so that it would be ready. "Now for you..." She turned back to her wardrobe and began pushing aside dresses as if she were looking for something in particular. "Ah, this one!" She pulled out a deep emerald dress and held it up against Cassandra. "This one would look perfect on you..."
CASSANDRA:
The Duchess was a little surprised at herself for confessing as much as she had, and even still it was only a small portion. Alexandria made it so easy to speak to her. "I know you worry about speaking with him," she said of Orin. "But I do not think you need to be so concerned." Hopefully, he remembered how he had hurt his sister during the ball all of those weeks back.
Green eyes blinked then. "For me?" Surely she had her own dress she could rummage up? Alexandria claimed to not be like usual queens, but certainly her clothes were still far more fine than her own. Cassandra loved pretty things, and anything that sparkled, but still. "Who am I trying to impress?" she laughed, glancing down as the dress was held up against her. "I'm sure I have something of my own..." Oh wow, was this velvet?
ALEXANDRIA:
She knew that Orin had learned his lesson and apologized for his behavior. She just hoped he would learn to bite his tongue, should the king say or do something he did not agree with. "I know. Sometimes, he just does not think things through before he speaks... That's what worries me." She laughed and shrugged her shoulders. "Perhaps I should sit next to him so I can stomp his foot if he starts to say anything he shouldn't." She laughed lightly and looked Cassandra over with the dress again. Yes, it was perfect for her. "I insist, please... You've done so much to help me with all of this..." She placed a hand on Cass' shoulder. "I appreciate everything you've done for me."
CASSANDRA:
To be honest, it might be hard for a lot of them to bite their tongues should Edward say something they wouldn't like. Orin wasn't the only one who spoke without thinking- Aric had a bad habit of it, especially with Edward. It was how they always were. She laughed, "May not be a bad idea. But then who will keep your future husband in line?" It was going to be an interesting night, indeed, and maybe she was even dreading it a little now. Not that she would express such at the moment.
The most sincerest of smiles washed over her face then. "Well, thank you," she said, turning to look at herself in the mirror. "And you're very welcome, Majesty." She bit her bottom lip in thought before talking again. "Everything will be fine. I'm going to do whatever I can to make it go smoothly. I promise."
ALEXANDRIA:
Sometimes, Alex had a habit of speaking out if she was strongly opposed or offended by something. She had a hard time biting her own tongue, which made her nervous too. Perhaps not as bad as Orin. But she couldn't imagine Aric. It would be interesting to see the two brothers interact. She laughed and tapped a finger against her lips in thought. "Orin on one side of me. Aric on the other side of me and you on the other side of Aric?" She grinned and shrugged her shoulders.
She offered another smile to her and nodded. "I hope so..."
CASSANDRA:
The Duchess chuckled gently. "That's one way to do it. Although, you should be seated at one head of the table." Edward, of course, would be at the other end. "It will show that you are still in charge of Aralore." Even though she had asked for aide, Alexandria still had to keep her head held high.
ALEXANDRIA:
She nodded in agreement. "Ah yes... I suppose you are right..." She pondered the the situation and nodded again. "Thank you for that suggestion." Alexandria smiled softly and let out a soft sigh. "Is there anything else that needs to be done for the banquet? If I imagine they are on time, they should be here in the morning... I am not sure I will be able to sleep at all tonight." A slight exhausted laugh escaped her followed by another sigh.
There was a knock at the door then. Alex called out and a servant entered with the wine Cassandra had requested. "Your majesty..." The servant bowed and placed the tray with the wine and glasses down before bowing. "I was given this notice to deliver to you." Alexandria stepped towards the servant and held her hand out to receive the notice. The servant left the room and Alexandria unfolded the notice and read it over. She glanced up at Cassandra with a nervous look on her features. "Their ship has been spotted..."
CASSANDRA:
Setting the beautiful emerald dress aside carefully, Cass shook her head. *No. Everything is ready and you do not have to worry about a thing. All you need do is show up." It wasn't the Duchess just trying to make it less stressful for her- everything truly was done. They just needed the guest of honor.
A little surprised to hear the knock on the door, she nearly forgot she had requested wine. Perhaps it had been very good thinking, because the queen would need much to help her rest. Especially when she saw the look on the other woman's face. "Does that mean we should be ready to receive them this evening or in the morning?" She still wasn't sure how far out they were or how long it would take them to get to the castle.
ALEXANDRIA:
After the war, Alexandria had set up a sort of warning system for the shores. Watch towers in several locations that were touched by the shores, each with a specific name so that when reporting it would be easier to tell which direction ships were coming from and how much time it took from that sighting until they would arrive at the docks. So far, the system seemed to work flawlessly.
The queen reread the note after Cassandra questioned how long they had until their arrival, and she quietly did the calculation in her head based off of which tower their ship had been sighted at. "Within the hour..." It wasn't much time. She moved back to her door and spoke with one of the nearby guards, requesting the servants to ensure the guest stay rooms were ready, and to alert Aric that they would be arriving soon.
Alexandria turned back to Cassandra and offered a nervous smile. "I am unsure of the proper customs... should I dress differently than I am now, to greet our guests?"
The queen had her own way of doing things as she saw fit, but when it came to other's, especially when she was trying to impress, she had no idea what was proper and expected.
CASSANDRA:
Before Alexandria could even answer her question, Cassandra was filling those glasses with the wine and already taking a few sips from her. "An hour?" That didn't seem like a very long time at all! They were prepared, however, they weren't expecting them this very evening. Knowing Edward, he had probably sent his original letter from the boat and not prior.
Handing the other glass to the queen, it was a silent suggestion that she drink it. It might help with the nerves. Hers was already half gone by the time she spoke again, shaking her head. "No, no, you're fine. It is late, he should not be expecting something so extravagant." And certainly they must be tired. "But here-" she said, leading her back to the vanity to have her sit. Setting her glass aside, Cass sought for some powder to help the queen with the dark circles under eyes. Some color on her lips, just something light, wouldn't be such a bad idea, either.
ALEXANDRIA:
She took the glass from Cassandra and did not hesitate to take a long sip from it before she sat down at her vanity. Yes, it was probably a good idea to hide the circles under her eyes and add some color to her pale skin. She stared at herself in the mirror and frowned slightly. She looked a mess. It had been days, maybe even weeks since Alexandria got a decent night of sleep. But she needed to get herself together, to put on any kind of front so that she did not appear weak or stressed or nervous, but rather, strong, confident and brave. A couple of deep breaths were taken. She needed to pull this off. Her kingdom--her people were depending on all of this. No pressure.
Once the makeup was finished being applied, she looked to Cassandra. "How do I look? Still an exhausted mess?"
CASSANDRA:
She did what she could for the queen, meanwhile finishing off that glass of wine faster than she should have. Cassandra knew she was frightened and worried, but there was no getting out of this. Despite it all, she couldn't help but feel like Alexandria would do just fine; it was just that she had to believe that she could.
Setting the makeup aside, she took a small step back as fingers rested beneath Alexandria's chin to lift her face for better view. "No. You look absolutely fine, lovely. And you won't be alone during this, I promise."
ALEXANDRIA:
She smiled to Cass and nodded. "Thank you, I appreciate your help and your kindness tonight." The queen came to her feet and grabbed her glass of wine, finishing it off . Hopefully it would calm her nerves. Her hands were nearly shaking. "I suppose we should find our way to the main hall and be ready for when they arrive?"
She brushed the wrinkles from her dress and glanced at herself in the mirror once again. Then she thought of something and stepped over to her vanity again, picking up a headband crown piece. Nothing too extravagant--and not her typical crown, but something, nonetheless, that would indicate she was, indeed, the queen.
She turned to Cass once again, as if asking for her final opinion on her appearance, and she extended her hand out to her. "Shall we?"
CASSANDRA:
"I'm glad to be of service," she said, bowing her head lightly. It had been a more pleasant evening than she expected, and hoped it would not be ruined by Edward's presence. She felt like she was helping Alexandria to calm down a little, and now her nerves were wracked all over again.
Nodding, her posture straightened before the widest grin curled her lips when she put the crown on. "Now that is a queen," she said, proud of her before linking arms to head towards the foyer.
ARIC:
Unlike the two women, Aric had managed to find some sleep, after days of practically nothing. So, naturally, it would be tonight that his brother would show up. And it would be tonight that a servant knocked on his door several times until the prince groggily climbed out of bed to receive the news. Almost an hour later, he was already in the foyer after lazily throwing his boots back on. He ran fingers through his hair and didn't even bother buttoning up half his shirt while he leaned against the windowsill to gaze out at the moonlit landscape. This visit was going to be a very interesting one...and he was dreading it.
ALEXANDRIA:
A soft grin was given to Cassandra in her response to her adding the crown. She held onto her arm then as they moved down the halls towards the foyer. Despite it growing late, the halls were somewhat filled with life as the servants quickly worked to ensure everything was in order and ready.
As they neared the foyer, she spotted Aric's figure and whatever nerves she had managed to calm, were now starting to creep back into her throat. Why did she suddenly feel so horribly nervous around him? She let go of Cass' arm as they came into the room and she offered a nod to Aric. "Good evening, my lord... I assume you have heard the news?" She nearly cringed at her question. Of course he heard the news...Why else would he be there at this time? She could tell he had been sleeping with that groggy look still in his eyes and his disheveled appearance, and she felt bad that he had been woken. Hopefully their new guests would be tired and head right to bed, so they would not be up much later.
CASSANDRA:
In all honesty, she was surprised to see Aric there already...and of course he looked like a frightful mess. "Really, cousin," she scolded him gently. "A nice jacket or something would suffice." Cassandra sighed as she approached him, attempting to button up the rest of his shirt as though he were a child. He was stopping her before she could, and she turned away in a huff to ensure that there was some light food and refreshments ready should her traveling family members require it.
ARIC:
He knew he had to try. He really did, because this was a bigger deal than he was letting on. It also wasn't difficult to notice that Alexandria was all nerves again, and most likely over this whole ordeal. Wasn't he supposed to be reassuring her?
Trying to blink the sleep from his eyes, he ran a hand through his hair again in attempts to smooth it out somewhat. Her question, however, made him grin faintly...because, yes, it was quite obvious that he had heard the news. "I cannot help but feel like Edward planned it this way. Have a whole sleeping castle awaken for his arrival." He ignored Cassandra's scolding look from across the room.
ALEXANDRIA:
She silently stepped closer to Aric as he spoke and stood in front of him, reaching out to Straighten his shirt and button him up, as Cass tried previously. Though not because she was trying to treat him as a child as Cassandra had, but more so in a helpful, wifely manner. She glanced up at him and offered a nervous smile. Her hands were shaking slightly. "You may have been the only one sleeping..." She let out a soft laugh and took a step back from him, eyes slowly glancing around the room. Was it horribly hot and stuffy in the room, or was it just her and the wine coursing through her blood?
ARIC:
He didn't push the queen away like he had his cousin, and it wasn't because Cassandra had treated him like a child. His back straightened at her approach, dropping his dark gaze to her small hands before they slowly rose to find her face. The slightest of grins was still curling his mouth, but his own hands were lifting to hers as if to help stop her shaking. He only let her go when she stepped back; dark eyes still remaining upon her. "You will be fine," he stated lowly, his voice somehow stern but still gentle. "This is just a formality." And possibly because Aric had gone all the way to Tresteria to beg for Edward to go about this differently...be he hadn't the heart to say that out loud to her.
ALEXANDRIA:
The thought had actually crossed her mind that the king had made this journey because Aric had gone to Tresteria to try and talk him out of the arrangement. But she wouldn't speak that sort of blame out loud or make Aric feel guilty for trying. A simple nod was given in response to Aric's attempt in calming her. It didn't really help, but she would pretend. Her hands folded in front of her, in attempts to try and stop them from shaking. She could still feel Aric's rough skin as they touched her hands, and part of her wished she hadn't removed them from his.
ORIN:
He, too had been sleeping, but the sounds out in the hallways--the chatter and buzz woke him. He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and threw on some clothes before stepping out of his room and into the hallway to try to figure out what was happening. Though he couldn't seem to get an answer from anyone. Quietly, he walked down the halls until he reached the main entrance. Perhaps he would find whatever was happening, there. When he arrived, he spotted his sister, Aric and Cassandra, and he instantly knew what was happening. The royal Tresterian family were about to arrive. Bloody hell. Maybe he should leave and go back to his room. But perhaps Alexandria needed him there for her.
He groggily stepped into the room and yawned, playing oblivious. "What is going on? Everyone is running around like there's a fire?"
CASSANDRA:
For someone who was trying to calm the queen down, Cass was starting to get a little stressed and overwhelmed. Still, she was willing to deal with it if it meant that Alexandria didn't have to. Her part would come soon enough. Directing one of the servants to get more wood on the fire, her attention alighted upon Orin when he decided to show up, and those greens rolled up into whites. "Really, do all the men here find that their wrinkled clothes are appropriate to receive a king?" At least, she didn't try to make him look presentable. If Aric didn't let her, she knew the queen's brother wouldn't.
ARIC:
Perhaps he was too tired to care, but his eyes remained upon Alexandria until Orin entered the room. Somehow, the sight of him made him chuckle, even more so to see his cousin all flustered about it. Well, Aric felt better to know that he wasn't the only careless one here, but Cassandra appeared to be the one that cared about how they looked.
"He is a king," he began to say. "But he should also understand how late it is." Maybe she should cut them some slack. Fingers pinched the bridge of his nose, feeling a headache coming on.
ALEXANDRIA:
At the sound of her brother's voice, she quickly whirled around and saw his, too, disheveled appearance. At Cassandra's remark, Alex couldn't help but burst out into laughter. She didn't know why, but she found it hilarious. Perhaps it was her nerves. She covered her mouth with her hand and let out a few more breaths of a laugh before she stepped over to Orin and grabbed onto his arm, using him to steady herself. Her eyes moved back to Aric as he spoke and she nodded. "Yes... it will be fine. I am sure they aren't dressed their best either, as they've been trapped on a ship for who knows how long?" She squeezed her brother's arm and fought the urge to nag him about behaving himself.
ORIN:
He just blinked in response to Cassandra's comment and frowned, his hands moving to try and smooth the wrinkles from his shirt, although he honestly didn't care. When Alex started laughing though, he kind of frowned. He could tell she was nervous and he wished he could make all of this go away. Honestly, he still didn't know why she had agreed to this whole mess of an arrangement, though he was sure she had her reasons. When Alex made her way to him and used him to steady herself, he instantly knew the severity of her nervousness and he draped his arms around her, pulling her closer. He leaned in to whisper to her quietly. "You cannot let him see you like this. Stay strong, 'Rora.. You have to..." He placed a light kiss to her temple and released her, but allowed her to keep hold of his arm. He knew his words were easier said than done for her. But he did not want to king to have power over his sister. If he saw how nervous she was, he would use that to his advantage.
Eyes turned to Aric and then to Cassandra and he nodded to both of them. "What do you need me to do?" Well, this was a change. He was willing to help, rather than talk in a way that he did at the ball.
CASSANDRA:
Her eyes went wide from Alexandria's laughter, but she didn't say anything in return. There was a mild grin on her face at the thought the woman may have gone mad, but it softened when she saw the interaction between sister and brother. Despite what happened at the ball, Mr. Evans could be rather sweet. It had been strange to see the other night, but the queen could certainly use his support now. Gaze flickered to her cousin who watched them silently, and she wondered many things.
"Nothing," she answered Orin promptly. "I don't believe there's much of anything left to be done.. except to wait." Had it been an hour yet? One glass of wine hadn't been enough.
ARIC:
All he had wanted to do was console her, but now he felt that to be wrong. They were betrothed, and he felt like he couldn't comfort her...how wrong was that? He didn't fully understand what had happened the other night, and he wasn't even sure how to approach the subject. So maybe he just wouldn't.
When Cass made it clear there was nothing else to be done, he walked to the refreshments, only to find that it was water. He grumbled lowly. Whiskey would be so much better right now.
ALEXANDRIA:
Orin was right. She needed to compose herself and stay strong, otherwise the King would see her as weak and feeble, perhaps. She squeezed Orin's arm again and forced a smile before letting go and she stood there, glancing around. Now all that was left to do was wait. Eyes caught Aric again as he wandered to the table of refreshments and looked displeased. Yes, maybe they all needed some alcohol right now.
ORIN:
A nod was given to Cassandra in response. But when he watched Aric, he knew there was something he could do. "Be right back..." He stepped out and was gone for a short time, before he returned, a servant behind him carrying a tray with various items. She carefully set the tray down on the table by Aric, curtsied and left the room. Orin laughed. "Figured we could all use a drink right now?" He stepped over towards the table and took a glass, downing about half the contents in one shot.
EDWARD:
The ship had finally set dock and they stepped off and onto Aralore's shores. A carriage awaited them. Eleesa, and the two sleepy boys boarded the carriage before Edward did. And they quietly made their way to the castle. Edward wasn't really sure what to expect, and he couldn't see much out the windows of the carriage, due to the darkness of the night. Once they arrived at the castle, their guards helped them out and led them into the castle where the four awaited their entrance.
Edward glanced around the entrance, judging everything he saw, until his eyes found his brother, the queen, his cousin and a man he did not know. "Ah brother... It is good to see you...And Cassandra."
CASSANDRA:
"Don't give me that look," she whispered to her cousin. Getting sloshed before his brother's arrival wasn't the best of ideas...and yet, it seemed to be the very idea that Orin thought was necessary. The Duchess couldn't help but roll her eyes and pray that the family got here soon, before either of them could get inebriated.
Fortunately, it was not much longer before the king was making his entrance, and all the servants were at attention. Cassandra smiled for him, "It is good to see you too, cousin." But her eyes fell upon the two boys who seemed to wake up a little more at the sight of her.
"Cassie!" they yelled in unison and ran towards her where she fell to her knees to embrace them in a tight hug.
"Oh, I have missed you." Seeing as how she currently couldn't have children of her own, she couldn't help but spoil the boys.
ARIC:
There was a genuine grin for the queen's brother when he brought in the alcohol, much to Cassandra's displeasure, and was happy to oblige by downing nearly the whole contents of that glass. Not before saluting Orin in thanks, of course. He was very appreciative of his effort. However, this brief good mood Aric managed to find himself in was quickly dismissed the moment he heard his brother's voice. Slowly turning around, he offered a slighter grin than the one he wore moments ago. "Brother," he said in simple greeting before approaching Alexandria and gently ushering her along with him with a hand at her back. He stepped up to Edward and Eleesa, giving his sister-in-law a gentle kiss to her cheek. She was tired, but was lovely as always. "May I introduce Queen Alexandria Eveleigh," he introduced her quietly before gesturing towards the other present royals. "My brother, King Edward, as you know-" he spoke to Alexandria before turning his eyes to the blonde queen. "And his wife, Queen Eleesa."
ELEESA:
Everyone was aware of what her husband could be like, but Eleesa was considered more gentle and tolerable. Dare she think of herself kind as well. Offering her brother-in-law a kiss to his cheek in return, her brown eyes alighted upon the queen when she was introduced. Immediately, she clutched the woman's hands between both of her own. "It is a pleasure to finally meet you, Alexandria. You have a beautiful home." Certainly it was a bit run down, but even she could remember that this land had gone through a horrible ordeal.
ALEXANDRIA:
She, too, did not hesitate to grab a glass of wine, sipping on it until she heard the announcement that the King and his family had arrived. She placed the cup back down and turned to watch as the family entered. A soft smile graced her lips at the interaction between Cass and the two boys, but she was soon being escorted by Aric and introduced to Edward and Eleesa. She offered both of them a smile and a curtsy. When the queen took her hands into her own, she regarded her softly and smiled again in response. "It is a pleasure to meet you as well. Thank you, and welcome to Aralore. I hope your journey here was a good one. Though you must all be exhausted..." She could see in the corner of her eye Edward was looking at her brother in questioning. He was the only one in the room that hadn't been introduced. "Your majesties... This is my brother, Orin." She shot Orin a quick glance before turning back to the royal family.
EDWARD:
For what it was, the castle appeared to be in decent shape. He watched his brother escort his future wife and introduce her to them. He bowed his head ever so slightly to the queen of Aralore, but remained quiet as his wife and Alexandria interacted. It wasn't until she introduced her brother, that Edward stood straighter and had a look of confusion on his face. "Brother?" He shot Aric a questioning glance before turning to Alexandria. "Then why is he not the King of Aralore? Is it customary for the women to rule in this land?" He looked at Orin with a bit of annoyance on his face. What was this all?
ORIN:
He bowed in respect to the Tresterian family when he was introduced. Catching that glance from Alexandria, he couldn't help but grin. He wasn't about to say anything. It wasn't his time or place. But when the King began questioning why he wasn't the king of this land, Orin nearly cringed. Alexandria really shouldn't have introduced him as such. He would have understood. He bit his tongue, wondering if he should say something to help her out, or if saying something would only make things worse. He clasped his hands behind his back, a look of annoyance on his face as well.
ARIC:
Of course, that was what Edward would pick up on without saying much about anything else. Aric's jaw visibly clenched while he kept any negative tone from his voice. "Mr. Evans is not of her blood, but he is no less her brother. Regardless of status." That last part didn't need to be said, but his brother would want to know.
CASSANDRA:
She rose up to her feet, holding onto the children's hands as she made her way back to the group. As Edward awkwardly pointed something out- something she hadn't even realized, nor thought to care about- she silently exchanged hellos with Eleesa who appeared to be feeling out of place all of a sudden.
ALEXANDRIA:
It was nearly foreign of her to think that Orin was not actually her real brother. She had grown up with him. His parents had cared for her for so many years. So when she was called out on it, she couldn't help but frown and look to Orin who she could tell was already biting his tongue. Her lips parted to explain, but Aric was speaking for her. She nodded in agreement, simply adding to his statement, even though no one really needed to know her history. "I was the only child. My parents were killed by the men who waged war on us here. Orin's family took me in and raised me until I was of age to take back the throne... I consider him my brother, and know him no other way, because I've known him my whole life and grew up with him. I apologize for the confusion, your majesty." Alexandria spoke calmly and like she was not bothered by the question.
ORIN:
He couldn't even imagine wanting to be a king if he was heir of the throne. It wasn't him. He often spent long periods of time out and away from the castle just to get away from the politics and formalities and whatnot. Not that Alex acted like a typical queen, but the servants and others in the castle treated her with such respect, as they should. It just wasn't his cup of tea. He remained silent as Alexandria explained her past. It was a lot more than what she said, but it was all they needed to know.
EDWARD:
He stared at Aric as he explained for the queen, and a slight grin etched his lips upward. Aric had been getting to know his queen, it seemed. Or maybe he was curious about it too and asked to make sure there was no threat to him becoming king. Something Edward thought he had confirmed anyway before the arrangement was made. He glared at Alexandria when she began to explain further to him what this Orin man was and why she called him her brother. He wasn't sure he liked the way she spoke to him, like she was putting him in his place or something? But he would let it go for now. He simply nodded and responded no further. "I suppose we have a lot to speak of tomorrow. It is late and we have traveled far. I trust we have a place to stay here? Cassandra, will you escort us?" He needed to have a word with her.
ARIC:
Remaining silent, he simply stood there as Alexandria further explained, and a part of him wondered how much his brother really cared for it. Edward barely even acknowledged it. Fortunately, he was dismissing them from anymore conversation... except for Cassandra. Aric met her eyes briefly and she seemed wary of it until her expression softened and she put on a smile for the king. When they left, Aric moved to finish the rest of his drink, murmuring in the sudden quietness, "Right. Well...that wasn't entirely infuriating."
ELEESA:
The queen seemed somewhat embarrassed by her husband's dismissive behavior, but who was she to speak up? When it seemed they would be heading to bed, she gathered her boys to follow Cassandra from the foyer. "It was lovely to meet you, Alexandria. I do hope we get more of a chance to talk tomorrow." Her smile was genuine, nodding her farewell to Aric and Orin as well.
CASSANDRA:
Green eyes widened, and she looked nervous for a second. Aric had seen her worry but she wouldn't allow Edward to be privy of it. Cass had completely straightened her posture and nodded to the king, "Yes, of course." She gestured for some of the servants to fetch any luggage the family may have, while one remained to lead them to their rooms. To he honest, Cassandra still didn't know the entire castle yet. "Right this way," she said to them, bidding a silent goodnight to the three they were leaving behind.
ALEXANDRIA:
She was slightly taken back that king Edward just dropped it and didn't acknowledge anything further. For making such a big deal about it, he didn't seem to care about the answer to his question. Well, this visit couldn't end soon enough, if this was how everything was going to go. She forced the thoughts out of her mind as Elessa said her goodbyes and addressed her. A genuine smile was given to the queen. At least she was pleasant. "It was so nice to meet you as well, your majesty... I would love to talk tomorrow. Sleep well." Sapphire eyes watched as they all left, leaving the room in a sudden hush, until Aric spoke. She glanced back to him with a questioning look, though she wasn't really sure what to say. Maybe her face said it all, though. It was quite infuriating. Ever since she took the throne, she had been given a hard time for being a single woman ruling a kingdom. It was a man's job. And Alexandria was tired of it. Her jaw clenched with anger and she finally spoke. "I do not need you to answer for me, Aric. I am quite capable of speaking for myself." She turned to Orin and frowned. "I am sorry you had to withstand that, and I thank you for holding your tongue." She walked towards him and took his hand, giving it a light squeeze, before walking out of the room. It was obvious that she was upset and angry. Maybe she should not have snapped at Aric, but to her, he had made her look weak and incapable of responding to a question that was directed at her.
ORIN:
And just like that, the matter was dropped. Well what the hell was the point of all that fuss? He felt awful for Alexandria--especially if this set the tone for the rest of the visit. He watched as the family left with Cassandra and the room fell silent. Awkwardly silent, until Aric murmured. He was about to laugh, but suddenly, his sister was displaying how angry she was at the whole situation. Maybe taking it out on Aric, a bit. He frowned, watching her as she approached and squeezed his hand, apologizing to him. "You have nothing to be sorr--" But she walked off, leaving Aric and him alone now. He scratched the back of his neck and looked to Aric, with an expression that clearly stated 'sucks to be you' He laughed and took sip of his drink, shaking his head. "Well then... That.... Went well?" His voice was laced with thick sarcasm and he stepped over to Aric, placing a hand on his shoulder. "She is just angry. Since she's been queen, no one, other than her people, seem to take her seriously as one. A king should be ruling, not a queen... She has been asked that very question multiple times... 'why is your brother not ruling instead of you' You can imagine how annoying that gets after a while..." He tried explaining his sister's reaction to Aric, hoping he wouldn't take it too much to heart.
EDWARD:
He was silent as Cassandra led him and his family to their stay rooms. He opened and held the door open for his wife and kids. "I will be in, in a moment." He let the door shut and he turned to Cassandra. "How are you, cousin? Is everything alright? I have not heard word from you in quite some time... So I figured I would come check in on you and everything going on around here..." He seemed annoyed. Cassandra was given a job, and as of lately, she has been leaving him in the dark.
ARIC:
Well, that was unexpected. Dark eyes were wide when they turned to Alexandria over her outburst. No, it was definitely not warranted, and he also wasn't going to let her simply berate him and walk out like that. "Then you should have explained it right away instead of giving him the opening to question you!" he called after her while she slipped from the room. Unfortunately, and she would learn this quickly, that Edward would have reacted the same way regardless. That was just what he was like.
Attention averted to Orin, as if to ask him for some backup...but naturally expected him to side with his sister. So, when he approached and actually tried to console him, Aric was even further stunned. The man's light-heartedness of the situation made it a little easier, but he was taking it to heart. He felt like he and the queen had been doing well and understanding each other...then, since the other night, everything was going downhill again.
"My brother has his stupid ideals. She left him an opening to question her outright, I wasn't-" He didn't bother to finish his sentence and just sighed; running a hand down his face in frustration. He filled up two more of those glasses and offered one to Orin. "I went to Edward months ago," he began, not really sure why he was even repeating this. "Requesting that he find another fair trade for offering aide to Aralore. Alexandria is quite capable and doesn't need to be tied down to me, out of all people." He took a few more sips of his drink. "He denied me, naturally." Now that he was talking, he couldn't stop. Maybe the lack of sleep was making him delirious. "I just wanted her to be happy...and I fear this damned visit was a result of my begging."
CASSANDRA:
Why was she so nervous? She was quiet the whole time during the walk, kissing the boys goodnight before they entered the suite with their mother. Then, as she knew, Edward was questioning her about why she wasn't being his useful spy. If she wasn't already pale, he may have noticed that all the color drained from her face. But Cassandra was good at lying. It was almost her expertise, some might say.
And she had to lie now. The truth was, she had been kidnapped...yet, to tell her cousin that, it might make him look badly upon Aralore. She couldn't have that. The blame had to be on her shoulders. "I'm sorry, cousin," she apologized with a gentle smile. "I fell ill for a short while- this place rarely has any sun, you know- and I've been tending to Henry any free moment I have. But, in all truth, everyone has been busy with the rebuild."
ALEXANDRIA:
She heard Aric as he called after her, throwing the blame back on her shoulders. Yes, maybe she shouldn't have left her introduction of Orin, so open. But she was angry at the whole thing and it didn't really matter who's fault it was. It happened. And yes, maybe that was just how Edward was... a typical king who liked to remind everyone how inferior they were to him. Alexandria did not turn back, she continued to her room and shut herself away for the night. She would try to get some sleep, though she knew that would be difficult. Things had been going downhill with she and Aric, and she wasn't exactly sure why. Was it because she had almost kissed him? Had she made their relationship so complicated now? Maybe she would need to speak with him in the morning to try and clear things up. The last thing they needed was for king Edward to see them not getting along. Although, he probably wouldn't care, as long as the marriage happened.
ORIN:
He took the glass from Aric and quickly drank its contents as he listened to the future king vent and confess what he had done, blaming himself for Edward's visit. Orin really wasn't good with all of this political stuff, and he honestly didn't know what to say to all of it. A sigh escaped him and he spoke calmly. "It has been a really long time since I've seen Alexandria happy... She carries the weight of the world on her shoulders, and nothing is ever easy. That woman has endured some pretty fucked up shit... pardon my language. I can't pretend to understand why she agreed to this marriage in the first place... But it's already done, and I am assuming cannot be undone. My only suggestion is to do everything in your power to try and make her happy. To work with her, never against her. She is an amazing woman, I hope you will learn to see that... To give her that chance. Any man who gets the chance to marry her, is lucky. And I am not just saying that because she is my sister and I have to." He sighed and scratched the back of his neck again. He didn't often show this side of himself to anyone, but he hated seeing Alexandria upset like that. And if he couldn't get rid of Aric or end this marriage, as he initially hoped to do, he might as well try to help make things work out. "Please take care of her... She is probably up there upset right now... Especially since you just yelled out to her like that. Maybe you should go talk with her?" Alright, he was stepping off his big-brother box now.
EDWARD:
He regarded Cassandra, eyes narrowing on her as if he was trying to pick up on any lie or story she was telling him. But he bought it, and nodded slightly. "I am sorry you have felt ill...and trust you are feeling better now? How is Henry? Should I begin finding you a new match anytime soon?" He really was oblivious to emotions and rarely thought his words through before he spoke them., rarely caring about other's feelings.
ARIC:
Orin would become even more of a surprise when he didn't chastise him, or even get angry. Despite what had happened at the ball, Aric didn't think he was a bad man...mainly because he didn't even know him. But this proved even more that his outburst had simply been because he was overly concerned for his sister. Which was evident even now as he spoke. "I've already seen that she's amazing," he commented, mainly to himself. He didn't want to interrupt Orin's little speech of advice. At least, when all was said and done, the two men were on the same page because Orin didn't want him here...and Aric also didn't wish to be, simply because it put so much pressure on Alexandria, and she was only doing this in an act of selflessness to save her home.
He chuckled lowly to himself then. Going up to her chambers to talk was not the best of ideas. As much as he wanted to make her understand that he hadn't meant to make things worse, he was avoiding being alone with her. The more he thought about what happened, the more he realized that they both stepped over the line, and that she was probably not ready for it. Now, he simply felt like a fool.
"Understand, no matter what my brother says or does...I have done nothing but try to end this. For her. She deserves better. But should this marriage happen, I promise that I will protect her with my life. And her kingdom." Even when he became king, he wasn't sure he could ever call it his kingdom. Because it wasn't. It was Alexandria's. It was Orin's. It was owned by everyone who called it home. Suddenly, he just felt like an even bigger intruder by no fault of his own.
Clapping the man on the shoulder in a form of thanks, Aric downed the rest of his drink before making his way out of the foyer. It wasn't to go towards the queen's chambers, but towards outside. Maybe some fresh air would help.
CASSANDRA:
Normally she was better composed than this, but she felt her heart pounding within her chest. The usual her wouldn't have batted an eye and told Edward about the bandits and her capture. But things were different now. So very different and she didn't know how to explain it. Now, the Duchess refused to throw Aralore under the stampede where her cousin would surely retaliate. Even though she had gone through hell in those caves, Cassandra knew that Alexandria had acted quickly and to the best of her ability, and it was why she was standing there today. She was alive because of her.
With his questions, though, the fear suddenly subsided to instantly be replaced by disgust. She was so angry, in fact, that tears were beginning to well up in her eyes. Just like that, he made it clear just how much of a pawn she really was. "Oh, silly me," she said, her voice wavering with sadness and anger all at once. "And here I thought I would be able to choose the next one." Albeit her marriage not feeling like a true one, she still couldn't bear the thought of losing Henry yet. He was a good soul, and her cousin was treating him as just another bank account. And who knew what kind of a man he would sell her off to next? "My husband is fine and will see you tomorrow night. Farewell, cousin." She gave a poor attempt at a curtsey to excuse herself, and turned to walk away. The last thing she wanted was for him to see her cry. She was so sick of men seeing her cry.
ORIN:
He was happy to hear Aric promise to protect his sister and her kingdom. And he noticed that he called it her kingdom, rather than his. That was a change from any other man who had previously been betrothed to his sister. Even Eoin had called it his kingdom as he awaited for their wedding day... One that never happened. He hoped, for the sake of his sister, that Aric would be good to her and would make her happy. He did not know much about him, but he was present and he had been out working to help with the rebuilding the lands. He hadn't known any other prince or king do such a thing. It was kind of up Alexandria's ally, as she, too, wasn't scared to get her hands dirty.
A nod was given to Aric as he clapped him on the shoulder. "Goodnight."
He turned, too, to head back down the hall to his chambers. As he walked down the hall, he spotted Cassandra walking towards him, presumably after leaving the king and his family. But he noticed there was a bit of sadness in her posture. He quickly stopped her, placing a hand on one of her shoulders. "Is everything alright?"
EDWARD:
He barely had noticed that look of disgust on Cassandra's face. Even as she spoke, he regarded her carefully, a slight laugh escaping him when she admitted that she was hoping to be able to choose the next one. But before he could say anything else, Cassandra walked away from him. So he called out to her. "I didn't know that's what you really wanted... Wasn't sure you were capable of finding a man yourself." He knew how his cousin was, and that she could be incredibly difficult to deal with. What man would want to deal with that? At least the ones he forced to, would. He shook his head and just simply went into the room.
CASSANDRA:
When she heard his retort, Cassandra only stopped for a split second before forcing herself to continue on. To acknowledge him would only make it worse, even if his words cut her like a knife. After doing everything she was told to, after agreeing to come to Aralore and spy for him, this was how he thanked her. Difficult woman or not, this was cruel.
Her jaws clenched and her back was rigid; those green eyes still glinting with unshed tears. Fuck him, she thought. This was not how family treated each other. Even as insufferable as Aric could be, and how much she could be, he never treated her like that. Ever.
So wrapped up in her enraged thoughts, she hadn't even realized anyone else was in the hall. She would have walked right passed Orin if he hadn't stopped her. Surprised washed over her face, even a bit of annoyance before it was gone quickly. "Of course," she lied. But the bitterness in her tone made it hard to hide that she really wasn't alright. She added sarcastically, "Just my loving cousin planning more of my future without my consent. You know, the usual." The Duchess was angry and hurt, and she didn't know which emotion to cling to more. What she really wanted to do was punch something, or break something.
ORIN:
He frowned at Cassandra's response, not believing her one bit. He could see her fuming and the anger in her eyes. Orin shook his head. "He...uh... Really seems like something else, huh?" He couldn't help but laugh. Not at Cassandra, but just at how much of a fool Edward seemed. Oh, he couldn't wait for tomorrow night. It was sort of entertaining, really. He lightly grabbed hold of Cassandra's arm and led her out of the hallway so they were a good distance from where the king was staying. Once there, he handed her the glass he held in his hand. "Finish what's in it...and then throw the glass to the floor. Smash it. It will feel good." He gave her a daring grin. This feeling, he knew all too well...and he knew how breaking and punching things helped blow off that steam.
CASSANDRA:
"Oh, you have no idea yet," she answered him. His laugh managed to lessen her anger briefly...even if it was only a small bit. She could still see Edward's cold eyes, still hear his voice telling her that she was basically worthless, just a piece in his puzzle. Perhaps she should woo a poor farmer and run away with him. Her cousin would love that.
But, alas, she didn't do well with so much mud and dirt...
A question was on her pursed lips as Orin ushered her away and down another hallway, until he was holding that glass out to her. Curiosity painted her tired features, even questioning his motives before she did as he suggested. The drink went down smoothly, and without hesitation, she chucked the beautiful glass right into the wall across from them where it shattered loudly into pieces. A sudden burst of amused laughter erupted from her throat before she was covering her mouth quickly with her hand, lest anymore noise alerted a guard or servant. She wouldn't be surprised if someone hadn't already heard the glass and were on the way to scold.
Orin was right, it did help. But now she had the sudden urge to smash every piece of china in the kitchens. "Thank you," she managed between the quiet giggles.
ORIN:
He grinned, watching her reaction to breaking the glass, and he let out a soft laugh at her reaction. "That's it?" Usually, it took a lot of breaking things to make him feel better, but Cassandra seemed pleased with just that one glass.
At the sound of the glass breaking, a servant came around the corner and looked to them and then the shattered glass. Orin cleared his throat. "My apologies... It slipped from my fingers. I've had a bit too much to drink." He flashed the servant a grin and a wink, and the woman smiled, waving him off as if it wasn't a big deal. Orin grabbed hold of Cassandra again and led her down a few more halls, quietly... Until they reached another room. He held the door open for her to what was one of the military training rooms. There were weapons of all sorts all along the walls, and practice figures. He grinned and motioned to her. "Have at it, my lady..."
CASSANDRA:
She was laughing once more, "Oh, quite the opposite. It was a start, though." And she didn't see anymore glasses around. Cass also figured that Alexandria wouldn't take kindly to her breaking any vases or tearing down tapestries in her fury, so she had to reel herself in. Her eyes widened from the sight of the servant before they slipped sidelong to Orin to catch his bit of flirtation with the woman. Only when he began leading her down another hallway again did she murmur in amusement, "Mr. Evans...you are a charmer." This time she meant it, as opposed to the first time when they were throwing barbs at each other on the ship.
Entering the new room, she took a few steps in to admire the wall of weapons with curious eyes. Then, at his comment, she whirled around to face him with an expression of incredulity. "Really, now," she said before stifling a laugh. "Do I look like the type who knows how to use any of this?"
ORIN:
He laughed at Cassandra calling him a charmer. "Oh, I hardly think so." He just didn't want the woman to be angry at having to clean up the mess. He watched Cassandra as she glanced around the armory and he laughed at her reaction. His gaze shifted around the room, as if looking for something for Cassandra. "Well, you can use the practice figures to just punch, slap, kick...." He started. "Or..." He walked around the room until he found one of the small wooden swords. "Or you can use this... Just hit the figures with it." He stepped back to her and handed it to her.
CASSANDRA:
Watching him, she was idly wondering if he was just hoping to see her make a fool of herself...because that was exactly what was going to happen. And she already had a couple of glasses of wine by this point, after having started earlier with the queen. It wasn't enough to make her tipsy, but she was feeling adventurous in the very least.
Cassandra quietly laughed, mainly at herself for what was about to happen. Taking the wooden practice sword, it wasn't as heavy as she expected it to be...but that still didn't mean much. Then, she slowly approached one of the dummies, staring at it before she gave a glance over her shoulder to him. "You cannot laugh," she said with narrowed eyes...but it was probably hard to take her seriously when she was grinning stupidly. Sighing and rolling her eyes, she turned back to the practice figure. The attempt at a swing was a pathetic one, she knew. She tried it again a little harder, and eventually her amused expression began to slowly disappear. Again and again, she struck the dummy with that sword, her stance all wrong, her posture incorrect...but she couldn't stop hitting it. Each strike was harder as her anger was bubbling back up to the surface, until she eventually cried out in both frustration and pain; the sword clattering to the ground. "Dammit!" She felt the splinter in her hand, so she gave that stupid dummy a swift kick before whirling away from it. She didn't realize it right away, but she had started to cry again.
Cassandra couldn't wait for Edward to leave already.
ORIN:
He did not expect Cassandra to be a professional swordsman, and half expected her to make a fool out of herself. But that wasn't the point. Orin knew what anger to do to a person... Hell, he had lived with so much rage in his life, that he learned it needed to be expelled somehow. He could tell Cassandra needed something like that. So when she told him he could not laugh, he held his hand up as if giving her his oath. He leaned his back against a wall and folded his arms over his chest. He only grinned when she started to beat the living daylights out of the dummy. But when she dropped the wooden sword, he could tell she got a splinter shard in her hand. But then he noticed she was crying. A good sign, though, because that meant she was releasing her anger. But he frowned and took a few steps closer to her, speaking calmly. "Are you alright?"
CASSANDRA:
Oh, this was sad. She probably looked more pathetic than she actually felt. "Of course I'm not alright!" she spat. Yet, somehow, her anger wasn't directed towards him. She was still so pent up that she was beginning to shake, glaring down at her hand. As much as she wished that practice dummy was the king, it wasn't. And her fate was somehow sealed again. "He's all set to marry me off to someone else of his choosing when Henry passes. To whomever can keep filling his bloody pockets." Many in the castle already knew that her husband was ill, and now she worried even more about him...and that was a terrible, selfish thought.
ORIN:
He stepped closer to her, taking her splintered hand into his own and he examined it closely as she finally blurted out what was bothering her. He kept his eyes down on her hand but he frowned by her words. Apparently this king enjoyed matchmaking? Another reason Orin tried to stay out of the royal political bullshit. Being forced into a marriage just made no sense to him. "Can't you refuse?" He didn't understand it, and maybe he sounded ignorant for it. He pinched her skin of her hand between the splinter, trying to get the tiny shard of wood to erupt back out of her skin. Once he saw the piece, he carefully pulled it out for her, with his fingers, before letting go of her hand. A sigh escaped him. "Would he have that power over you if you did not return to Tresteria? You would be part of the royal household here, once Aric marries Alexandria. So you would be obligated to follow Aric's rule, as your king."
CASSANDRA:
She was hesitant when he took her hand, even more nervous when he attempted to take out the splinter. Cassandra flinched only once before forcing herself to relax; green eyes cast down to watch him work. His question had her laugh lightly in that sarcastic way. "I refused before...and look where it got me." Still, she could have been wed to a cruel man, so she was grateful for that.
As he mentioned Aric becoming king, it suddenly dawned on her. Technically, both cousins would be on equal ground. Eyes widened and lifted to his face; a questioning expression washing over her own. "I...do not know." Would it be possible? Well, Mr. Evans was smarter than he looked! The thought almost had her grin, but something else Edward said had her frowning. "Am I...completely insufferable?" If she were to ask anyone to be honest, it would this man.
ORIN:
It only made sense to him that Cassandra was free to choose where she lived. Even if she ran off to some other land, away from all of this. She would no longer be under Edward's control. He shrugged his shoulders. "You're a resident of Aralore now... and Aric is your family too...I don't see why not... But then again... I don't understand half of all this royal political foolishness." A laugh escaped his lips, followed by a sigh. He felt bad that people had to live that sort of life. But when Cassandra asked if she was insufferable, Orin looked her over with a confused expression. Where was that coming from? He couldn't help but laugh. "I wouldn't say completely..." he teased. He maybe had misjudged Cassandra in the beginning, or maybe not. But she was human and raised a certain way...much differently than he was. But she had become slightly more tolerable each time he ran into her. He appreciated her trusting him with her vulnerability and realness, so underneath her facade she put up for whatever reason, Orin felt she was a decent human being. "I wouldn't say you are insufferable. Just stubborn and stuck in your ways..." He looked to her questionably. "Why do you ask this?"
CASSANDRA:
It would be wonderful for her to choose, wouldn't it? But that wasn't the ways of nobility, unfortunately, and she didn't seem to chide him for not understanding it. If anything, she envied him for the freedom he had, a freedom his own sister didn't have either. At least, Aric was a good man. Cassandra didn't know who she would be forced to marry next. She grinned when he admitted he didn't get the political foolishness. "Probably better that way," she gently joked. "Less of a headache."
Then he was laughing again, making fun of her, and she jabbed him lightly in the shoulder for it as she refrained from joining in the laughter. Oh, she knew she was bad, and she could be so much worse...but she'd like to believe that she wasn't a completely horrible person.
Was she? Did people actually despise her?
When he finally answered her honestly, Cass was picking up the fallen practice sword to slowly make her way back to the rack to place it where it belonged. She hesitated then, glad that her back was turned to him because her face was a display for several emotions all at once. Now, she wasn't sure if she wanted to answer him. Cassandra wanted his truth, and the truth hurt a little.
"Edward doesn't think I'm capable of finding someone who could love me...if he hasn't bribed them with a nice dowry." That was far more embarrassing to say than she expected. She really should stop telling this man all her secrets.
ORIN:
He was a lot like Cassandra in some ways, in the fact that they both had a mean side to them, but both of them had allowed one another to see the nicer, more genuine sides of their selves. Orin had his own reasons, as he was sure Cassandra did. But when Orin wasn't an ass, he was a decent guy who cared and was good at listening, easy to talk to and vent to. Which may be why the duchess kept spilling to him. Because he allowed her to, with no judgement.
When she admitted to him what Edward thought of her, he could only frown. He honestly didn't know what to say to that. Not because he agreed with it, but because, how could anyone say something like that, and how could he convince her otherwise? "I don't know much about this man... But from what I have seen, I don't think he knows much about anyone, except for himself..." He frowned and shrugged his shoulders. "Don't let him bring you down like that. You know yourself and are capable of doing whatever you want to do..."
CASSANDRA:
It wasn't Orin's job to know what to say, nor did she actually expect him to try. When he did, however, she was grateful for it. Evident by the small smile that barely reached her eyes. "When we were children, I never remembered him to be so oblivious and cruel. I couldn't tell you when he changed. One day...he just did." Idly, fingers trailed along the handle of the rack of wooden swords as she walked. And then she paused, her perfect posture breaking just a little. "The thing is, I'm not even sure I know myself." Cassandra quickly turned back around to look at him, conflict and embarrassment softly contorting her features. "That is such a strange thing to say." Fingers went to her lips to stifle a laugh that was more forced than anything. "And now, after worrying that you or Aric might jump down his throat, I fear it will be I that strikes him down tomorrow."
ORIN:
As Cassandra reminisced about their childhood, Orin wondered if it was becoming king that altered him. Made him greedy for power, as did it with most royalty. Power was a cruel thing. But when she admitted that she wasn't sure she knew herself, he frowned slightly. He understood completely. There was a time that Orin felt this way, and so he knew how to give the advice on this one. "The perfect time to figure that out... change into what you want to be... Repair what you don't want to be. Make yourself over. You're in a new land now, Cassandra." He paused, wondering if he should have addressed her by name. Was this the first time he had? "No one knows who you are... Who you were... Doesn't that seem like a good opportunity?" He shrugged his shoulders, but then laughed when she admitted that she feared she would be the one to react. "Wouldn't that be a sight I'd love to see?" He grinned slightly. "Can I give you a hard time if you do?" He laughed and stretched his arms over his head. "I'm actually not sure I should go tomorrow evening, now..."
CASSANDRA:
Power could corrupt any man- or woman- that was for certain. She had been brought up knowing she had it, to a certain extent, and it made her oblivious to many things before her arrival in Aralore. Orin kept saying this was her home now...but was it? What if Edward demanded she leave before Aric was wed to the queen? And the ultimate decision was up to Henry, who might feel more obligated to the Tresterian King than his own wife.
But it was hard to think about it when Orin was making everything sound so simple and easy. And by forgoing any titles or formalities for what was, indeed, the first time he used her name, she grinned softly. Maybe it wouldn't be as difficult as she feared. "I suppose it does," she agreed, albeit a bit hesitantly. Cass would laugh again as he joked about her attacking Edward in some way, but it dissipated when he spoke again. "But you must," she was quick to say. "For the queen's sake. And mine."
ORIN:
He shook his head. "You saw the way he looked at me... I think I will just make things worse for Alexandria, by being there..." He frowned and shrugged his shoulders. "Or I won't be able to control myself and I'll end up with my fist in his face, or something equally damaging." He sighed. "It took a lot for me to stay quiet tonight... If he says or does anything worse, I'm not sure I'd be able to constrain myself... And you know how that went last time I overreacted, and made myself look like a drunken fool." He hated that he did that, especially since it hurt Alexandria. If he could take that back, he would, but it was done and over with now. "And for your sake? What would my presence there do for you?"
CASSANDRA:
Everyone remembered what happened that one particular night, but it was in the past. He apologized for it, and held his tongue well this time. "We all make mistakes," she said after a moment, sounding like she spoke from experience. "But you cannot stand here and tell me to be the person I wish to be, when you are not willing to try and be better for her." There was no chastising tone in her voice this time, just simple honesty.
Cassandra walked back to him and took one of his hands in between both her own. "She needs you there, Orin. And Edward needs to see that the queen has people standing beside her through this all. Your absence will be noted and possibly do more harm than good." Oh, her cousin would undoubtedly notice, as he was already noticing many other things. "If I can sit there and keep my mouth shut, you can, too." Maybe that was even a challenge.
Just when she was about to grin again, he was asking her something else, something she hadn't even realized that she said. Letting go of his hand, she busied herself with smoothing out the front of her dress. "I don't know." Cassandra appeared almost taken aback, like she was accusing him of something but her voice sounded unsure, perhaps even a little flustered. "I suppose that...well, it would make me feel less alone to know I am not the only one fighting the urge to run out of there. Or something far worse." Or something like that. Maybe she was unexpectedly finding this man to be a worthy friend, one she had shared a decent amount with already. It only made sense to be consoled by his presence in desperate times.
ORIN:
She was absolutely right in calling him out just then. And she made a good point. His sister did need more people standing beside her. He seemed a bit surprised when she held his hand, but said nothing. He was sure it was to get his full attention and force him to listen to her. It worked, he supposed. But he couldn't help but grin when she challenged him to sit there and keep his mouth shut. Well, she would at least expect some glances every time Edward said something that was intolerable. He laughed lightly and shrugged his shoulders before he spoke quietly. "Fine... I will be there. But I am blaming you for anything that I do wrongfully..." He nudged her gently and laughed again.
CASSANDRA:
Alexandria was worried sick, and having familiar faces around her, ones she can count on, would help tremendously. It was certainly going to be a long night, and Cassandra prayed there would be plenty of wine. Or whiskey. Whiskey was stronger. She finally smiled again when he conceded, nudging her as well. "Deal," Cassandra answered quickly, so matter-of-fact as if she didn't have a worry in the world that he might do something stupid. She would walk by him then towards the door, purposely bumping her shoulder into his, her chin held high. A pause, she turned just enough to look at him from over her shoulder. "Oh, and wear something a bit more relevant." A hand gestured to his current attire. "Even though vagabond suits you." Whether that was actually a compliment or not, he would be hard-pressed to tell. Even while she flashed a wry grin on her way out of the training room.
ORIN:
He grinned as she agreed to take the blame for his misbehaving. She can't say that he didn't warn her, though. He headed towards the door, opening and holding it for her as she bumped into him, with her head held high. Well, he was leaving her in a much better mood than he found her, so he assumed he helped. It made him smile ever so slightly. But when she turned and commented on his attire, he couldn't help but burst out laughing. "A vagabond, huh?!" He left the training room and let the door shut quietly behind them. "Maybe just a loincloth, then?" He grinned with that mischievous smile of his. "I will do my best, my lady..."
CASSANDRA:
Much better, frankly. All it took was to beat on a dummy with a stick. And possibly a little more. Perhaps she wouldn't be worrying or thinking about too much until tomorrow night, allowing her to get some rest. That is, until Orin managed to make her stop completely in her tracks. She literally paused in her step, nearly causing a small fumble before turning enough to regard him again. Oh my. Were her eyes just a little too wide? Her lips pursed while her mind sought for logical words. "Oh, well...that would hardly be suitable," she joked, managing to find her wits. Then, without a care in the world (that logic just magically disappearing), emerald hues slowly took him in from head to toe; that sly smile returning. "Perhaps another time." Brows lifted in gesture and she giggled to herself while she turned one last time to head to her room. "Goodnight, Mr. Evans."
ORIN:
He couldn't help but laugh at her reaction to his suggestion of the loincloth. It was priceless.. And he decided then that he would tease her about that from time to time. Especially since she suggested another time. He grinned and cleared his throat. "Goodnight, Mrs. Davenport." He turned and headed back to his own chambers. Tomorrow would be interesting, to say the least.
