Lee wasn't looking forward to this, and it was partially why he hadn't bothered to request that his wife and sons be present. He couldn't be entirely sure what this was going to entail, just that it was going to be discussing a rather delicate matter...one of which he was a part of and couldn't exactly say so.
On top of this and Sinead's unexpected appearance, he was already tired. He knew this was going to result in a talk later, but one thing at a time. It wasn't that he didn't wish to see her, but he had a lot going on right now. "Of course," he told her quietly before she was moving to her chair. He'd help pull it out for her if she allowed before taking his own seat, which should have been his father's right now. But, of course, Robert was busy in Ethion so it fell to him to step in after his mother if necessary.
Leaning back in his seat, currently lacking an appetite, Uailean listened to Catriona give her speech. She spoke of the Unseelie, hinting to the fact that any one of them could be involved and that she didn't care to know. It caused him to draw in a deep breath, his hand clenching beneath the table because that idea didn't settle well with him.
'We look after our own, do not forget this.'
It was the very reason why he was doing what he was, why he was overworking himself and couldn't even tell his wife. All he could do was hope none seated at this table were a part of the Unseelie- to him, it was quite the opposite of looking after their own. It had been their own in danger at that party...how was that protecting anyone?
His mother's speech turned a little dark, speaking of a war that was looming over them, growing bigger and bigger each day. There was no avoiding it. He knew it was coming, he could sense it, he was seeing the tension caused by it every single day. She was right- it was inevitable and they had to choose.
Deep down, Lee knew what he wanted to say, but it shouldn't be something the rest of the family should agree to. Before he could think to find any words to speak, he heard his wife's voice and it brought him out of his thoughts. Dark eyes blinked over at her in slight surprise until his heart swelled with pride for the woman, and he offered a small but sincere smile.
'I'll follow you to glory or into my grave, whatever may come.' His smile faltered a little, because he felt that fear creeping back. Without even realizing that he was doing it, Uailean reached over for one of her hands as his attention settled upon the table in front of him.
"Whatever may come is the question, isn't it..." he spoke up quietly, still trying to rummage through all of the thoughts in his head. "Or more importantly- do we just sit back and let him slaughter more? Do we wait until the day one of us does get hurt?" In a way, Lee was just reiterating what Cat had said, but there was insinuation in his tone, as if he had already made up his mind. He just wasn't willing to make the decision for anyone else.
He was a military man, but he was also a Mystic. He was doing what he was doing to protect not only his family, first and foremost, but the others with magic who would certainly become an extinct breed if the king had his way. How long would it take for him to set his sights on the Lee Fryes and kin? "We need to protect our own...but even together- this family- will not be enough to withstand the storm." There was too much to contend with alone, and they had to know it.

Eoghann leaned back in his chair, giving his full attention to his mother as she gave her little speech. He froze slightly at the mention of the unseelie, and his eyes flickered to Risa Devany from where she sat at the table, before going back to Catriona. She was speaking of a coming war, and what the family would do. The logical decision? Look at everything from various points. See what worked best for everyone. Only, Eoghann wasn’t being logical. He hadn’t been logical since Melody had been murdered before his very eyes, and though only a handful of Lee Frye’s knew about it, it didn’t stop him from wanted blood for blood. If Allarick wanted a war, Eoghann Lee Frye would fucking give him one. He’d opened his mouth to say as much, but Sinead surprisingly spoke before he could. He let his dark eyes drift towards his sister-in-law, and he was reminded again why liked her so much. She was a fiery one, and their beliefs were similar in this. His eyes then went to his oldest brother as he spoke. Eoghann chewed on what Lee was saying, and if he had known what his brother was internally thinking about the unseelie, he would have told him that they hadn’t known Rosemary and Aoife were at the party. But if they had, there was no doubt in his mind Eoghann and Risa would have made sure they were out of harm's way. And if they had been injured….Well...They’d need a new Unseelie leader. But he didn’t know, he could only go off of what was spilling from his mouth now, and Eoghann reached up to stroke the hairs of his short beard by the corner of his mouth. “Well, that’s easy..” He said with a small shrug. What usually would have brought a small smile to Eoghann’s face, didn’t. In fact his face lacked any and all of that mischievous glint he normally wore. He’d promised himself after Mel died, he wouldn’t lose another, and that meant his family. “We don’t wait. He thinks he’s won right now with how the party went, and sure the city’s crawling with Wardens, but now. Now is as good a chance as any to strike.” He leaned forward to tap a firm finger on the table. Eoghann was a Ranger and used to working in smaller units. He was a man accustomed to stealth, dealing in the shadows and striking when the enemy didn’t suspect it. “So what we’re outnumbered. There’s quite a few of us that can take out a whole warden unit single handedly with the gifts we’ve been given.” He leaned back in his seat, his eyes were on Lee the entire time, but now they drifted to the faces of his siblings and cousins before they landed on his mother. “But if you’re worried our strength isn’t enough, then there has to be other families who would get behind us if we took a leadership position with this.”

Cat gave them a chance to think, a chance to speak should they feel the need to. Despite each and every member of the family at this table being an adult, fully grown and fully capable of taking care of themselves: it was difficult not to see the shadow of the children they had once been. It was difficult not to remember the looks on their faces when they had once come running to her with scraped knees or bunches of posies pilfered from the garden in their chubby little fists. It was difficult to set aside the desire to shelter them and remember that their best chance of survival in these times relied on the lot of them working together- be that in open rebellion, quiet resilience, or even in tearing up the roots they had forged here and fleeing to family across the sea. Though Cat knew it would not come to that, no matter how much her brother in law tried to make her see sense. Teronna was dangerous, but this family was more than capable of weathering the storm…
Lee Fryes, McIntyres, Devanys all. The family had fire in their veins and one mad king could hardly hope to snuff out such a light.
When Sinead Lee Frye rose to speak, the Lee Frye matriarch listened with a stony expression- unreadable even to those who knew her best of all- though her heart swelled with pride to hear such devotion and loyalty in her daughter in law’s tone. Her children that had married had married well- Sinead was testament to that, speaking before any Lee Frye of blood rather than name had even stood to make their voices heard.
When the woman had finished, Catriona offered the smallest of smiles- bowing her head in a gesture of gratitude. Though she did not open her mouth to speak. Instead, Catriona turned her attention to her eldest son, Uailean Lee Frye , as he echoed his wife’s sentiments.
Next to speak was Eoghann Lee Frye . And Cat allowed a moment or two of silence to pass before she rose again, confident that enough time had passed to allow any of the assembled cousins and siblings to add their thoughts to the discussion- Catriona spoke, her gaze wandering from Lee Frye to McIntyre, to Devany, addressing them each in turn:
”It would be too hasty to make this decision tonight, but it feels as though a weight has been lifted in bringing these concerns to the table. We must remember that family is what is important, most important, and I would not suggest putting us all at risk if it wasn’t a necessity. But this crusade of Allarick’s will eventually find its way to our door- whether we are prepared for it or not. Whether we rush out to meet it or not.
Think on what has been said here. Think of the loyalty we owe each other- the bonds made in blood or by vow. Think on which families may support our cause should we decide to take up arms or decide to make more political moves.
But for now, it has been so long since the Gods have blessed us with the opportunity to have so many of us together. The kitchens have been hard at work and it would be a shame to allow such good food to be soured with further talk of wars and politics.”
As though on cue, the doors were thrown open and steaming platters of food began to be ferried in- it seemed as though there was enough food to cater for an army let alone one family.
