The truth of the matter was, Sevrin really didn't know how he felt. He thought he had known, all of those years ago, but what had it truly been? How did he feel now that she was standing before him again? Despite the fact that she was clearly different, it was still Sarra in the way she spoke, the way she looked at him, the way she felt even innocently beneath his fingertips.
He didn't know how to feel, and it bothered him. He had been taken so off guard, and Sevrin Demarais didn't do well with that, ever.
'If you have to ask that question, you're a bigger fool than I thought.' He let out the breath he hadn't realized he had been holding. Fuck. Now he understood. No, he had understood before but was trying to purposely ignore it. Somehow, he thought he could ignore all of it. At the ball, Sev briefly wondered if he would see her...but that brain of his didn't think any further than that, not wondering what he would say or what he would do if they had approached each other.
Sarra was there before him right now, and he still didn't know what to do.
There was this dread deep in the pit of his stomach, like something was telling him to speak or act, that if he allowed her to continue walking away he would never see her again. Wouldn't that be a good thing? It would be better and safer for her for so many damn reasons. 'I'm a fool for thinking you might have felt the same.'
Still, he stood there in silence, watching as she turned around. His throat was closing up until he finally sighed at himself. "Stop," he finally said, the one word biting the air sharply. Sarra wouldn't see the continued confusion on his face now, she wouldn't see the conflict unless she turned around. "Wait..." Sevrin added only a few seconds after, his voice quieter.
His feet were rooted to the cold earth as eyes drifted to her face when she turned back around. She had stopped yet he still didn't know what he was doing, he didn't know what to do. That voice at the back of his mind was telling him to let her go- too much time had passed, they were two completely different people, he lived a dangerous life. Everything he could possibly think of to push her away came flooding into his head. And yet, somehow, Sevrin managed to ignore them all.
Long strides carried him to her where he gently cupped her face with his hands, fingers filtering into that blonde hair. He stared down at her for a short moment, that wonderment in his gaze as though he was still struggling to believe she was right there, trying to find the words to say to her but none came. So, instead, he tilted his face down to her own and claimed her lips in a kiss that belied his usual nature. It was hesitant, it was gentle, yet did not lack the passion to make up for the loss of all of the years they were apart.

Just keep walking. Just go, go back to the inn. She quietly ordered herself. Once there she could unbox the feelings that were currently constricting her torso and making it difficult to breathe. Had it all been for nothing? Those last five years of traveling, searching? And for what? To find he might not have missed her the same way she might have missed him?
His order to stop just made her want to move faster away, but the followed "Wait" that was quieter had her hesitating. Wondering if she'd merely jumped to conclusions. She clenched her jaw, daring to turn to look back at him. Struggling to keep her bottom lip from trembling as she waited. Waiting to hear what he might have to tell her, instead she saw him taking long strides towards her. She was frozen in place for a moment, a part of her told her to go, but another part clung desperately to the notion that he could feel the same and just be in denial about it. A lot had happened in five years for both of them.
She tilted her head back, looking at him expectantly as he cupped her face, searching his eyes to try and make sense of what was going on in his mind. It was as if he was still trying to believe she was there and in front of him. She herself was also in amazement that of all places Tresteria would be where she found him. He was claiming her lips then, and thoughts about anything vanished. She could cry again, she realized as she stood there. There'd been a time where she didn't think she'd be able to stand there, and feel Sevrin's lips on her owns again. To be in his embrace. She'd missed him so much, and that relief at finding him again, was sweeping over her like a tidal wave. There was a small whimper as she fought the threat of tears again.
Sarra finally moved, wrapping her arms up and around his neck as she stood up on her tiptoes. pressing herself into him. Afraid he'd vanish if she wasn't holding on. Letting his familiar scent wash over her, as she returned his kiss. Moving her lips more confidently, and desperately against his to show him she was there. She was real, and that she had missed him more than he believed. After a moment, she pulled her head away, slightly breathless, as she looked up at him. Taking one of her hands to cup the side of his cheek. "I've missed you, so much." She said vehemently in a whisper, as her thumb stroked his cheek.

Maybe this wasn't a good idea. Maybe he shouldn't be slipping back into old habits because he wasn't sure what tomorrow would bring, he wasn't even sure if he would be in Tresteria for much longer. Already he was testing the limits of his banishment, and yet...this island hadn't been her home much for the past few years either, had it? She had runaway, she had traveled, all in hopes of finding him. Nothing was tethering her here.
But his life was too dangerous. Why was he accidentally forgetting that part?
Even still, he wasn't sure if it had been love he felt for this woman. Sevrin didn't know what love was when not in relation to his family. After Sarra, he never pursued anything like that, nothing more than one night stands. His needs were never matters of the heart, but he remembered spending every possible waking moment with her all those years ago. He had wanted to, he had desired to see her more than once. If that wasn't something then he didn't know what else it was.
Everything suddenly became so real again and he nearly forgot where he was; it almost felt like he had never left. She was there with him, he could feel her, taste her lips, and for a long moment he didn't remember or care about anything else. Even when she drew away, taking some of the air from his lungs, he almost felt like his old self. How he used to be. There were no scars, no deep hatred for things because he barely had a care in the world. Now, he carried a heavy weight upon his shoulders, a crew who depended upon him.
Sev rested his head against hers, his eyes heavy as he looked down at her face. It was another moment before he spoke, "I didn't mean to leave you..." A pause, his voice was strangely quiet. "If I had known..." If he had known she was trying to run, would he have waited for her? Would he have allowed her to come with him?
Why couldn't he answer that question, even while she stood there in front of him?

Sarra couldn't take her eyes from his as she stared up at him with the snow coming down around them in that quiet alley. She closed her eyes for a moment as Sevrin rested his head against hers and she let a small sigh out, before she opened them. Glancing up to see hooded look in his eyes before he spoke. Her chest ached at his words and she smiled sadly at him. the stroke of her thumb against his cheek continued to try and act as some sign of comfort. "I know," She said softly. Neither of them had planned for him to leave the way he had. it had been out of their control, and her father had been to blame.
The smile staid on her face, softening slightly. It was an unknown to what either of them would have done. There was no telling what sort of life they'd have had if Sarra had found him sooner, or had managed to get herself on that ship. It didn't matter either, as what happened, happened. "We can't change the past." She whispered. They could play hypothetical all they wanted, it wouldn't change anything. "What matters is right now, and I'm certainly positive this is very real." She said with a small curl of her lips. They could worry about the future later. She titled her head up, slanting her lips against his in light kiss before her nose was suddenly assaulted by a snow flake. Causing a cold shiver to run down her spine, she couldn't help the small laugh as she looked up. They were going to get covered in the white powder if they stood there long enough.
She pulled her eyes from the sky to look back at Sev. Reaching up to brush some of the snow from his hair. "We're gonna freeze if we stay out here much longer." She mused quietly. "Do you have a place to stay tonight?" She asked curiously, not yet wanting to part with him.

Sevrin struggled to find answers to the sudden onslaught of questions in his head. It was so very clear and obvious how much she seemed to care about him, even after all of this time. How did he feel? Even those few years ago, he hadn't been entirely sure, or perhaps it was more like he never stopped to think about it. Same with how he did now, Sev simply lived in the moment and barely thought about the next day or what the future could bring- it held him back, and he refused to allow it. His life was his own and he carved his own path. The best thing Haystone ever did was get him banished.
Imagine him as a stuffy lord of the court? It was laughable.
He preferred the danger, the excitement of the seas and the many lands he got to frequent. He could take whatever jobs he so desired and damn the consequences. That was freedom, and he wouldn't trade it for anything.
'What matters is right now, and I'm certainly positive this is very real.' A corner of his mouth lifted in a smirk. "I'm not really drunk yet, so...yes, I'm fairly certain this is real, too." Or just some very wild and vivid dream that he miraculously wasn't waking up from.
Sarra kissed him again, before he watched that snowflake fall upon the tip of her nose. He wiped it away with his thumb, feeling how cold her skin was. Maybe it was foolish to stand out here for so long, even if it was somewhat peaceful. He'd been traveling for weeks, and this had been the first time on land since then. He could handle it, but he wasn't keen on her having to.
With her question, he couldn't help one of his eyebrows arching in questionable insinuation (he simply couldn't help it). Logically, he should tell her to go home, but after what she had told him, after everything, well...it was a little difficult to utter the words. "I've got a room at the inn," he told her quietly, his arm ever so slowly drawing her closer against him. "Are you not going to pay your dear ol' daddy a visit?" Would that even be a good idea? Were Sevrin to guess, probably not, but it would be something he would do anyway, just to piss the man off.

Oh that look. How could she forget the raised brow on insinuation? How many times had he looked at her from across a crowded hall and given it to her? How many times had it led to him sneaking into her window, or pulling her into the nearest available door with a lock? Apparently she could forget the look, but it brought back those old memories. She couldn’t help the small laugh as she grinned up at him. That sense of missing him had returned, and Sarra was just happy she’d found him again. She tilted her head to the side and arched both brows at him. “What a coincidence, so do I.” She said in amusement as she felt herself drawn in close to him. She wondered if they hadn't run into each other at the bar, if they’d have run into each other at the inn. It was possible.
At the mention of her father she barked in laughter. “I think he’d kill us both if we just showed up at this hour, Sev.” She said moving her hands so they rested on his chest. Though the possible look on his face would be priceless without a doubt. Sarra Haystone, Runaway daughter back from her adventure with the banished Lord Sevrin Demarais on her arm? Her father would certainly lose his temper, and Sevrin would be dancing with the hangman’s noose if he wasn’t careful. She wouldn’t risk him, even if he wanted to get under her father’s skin.
The grin on her face softened considerably as she considered Sevrin. Her head tilted to the side. “I had plans of sneaking over tomorrow morning to at least see my mother and sisters.” She confessed. “I’ve written them letters, but I fear my father’s probably put vile thoughts in their heads about me.” She rolled her eyes at the thought, but wouldn’t put it above the man. “And you? Have you gotten to see your family yet? Do they know you’re back?” She asked him more gently. She didn’t want to keep him from them if he had a limited time. As selfish as she was to take all his time, she wouldn’t. The way Sarra saw things now, the man wasn’t going to be rid of her anytime soon. Now that she found him, she wasn’t going to lose him. Not again.

It was probably a bad idea to even think about starting something up with this woman. Obviously, the last time he got involved, he was nearly beheaded and was banished from his homeland. Regardless of that likely not happening again (considering he was technically still banished), Sevrin knew he was going to have to leave soon. He was aware that she had not been safe and sound in her father's home this entire time, but that didn't mean he was ready to bring her along with the Brotherhood. It was dangerous, and it shouldn't matter what he might suddenly want. He couldn't be selfish...then again, he wasn't even sure what he wanted or what exactly he was thinking right now.
'What a coincidence, so do I.' "Uh huh..." Was he even listening? Sure. Maybe. A little bit? Drawing her closer wasn't really matching the idea of him needing to walk away from this before he definitely couldn't. But Sevrin Demarais had a tendency of being fairly stupid. Case in point: his grin was a little dark at the idea of showing up at Haystone's home with his runaway daughter. Oh, if he really wanted to cause problems, it could be so easy to do so. However, Aric had called him back temporarily, and complicating things for his cousin wasn't exactly on his agenda.
Blinking, he finally drew his attention up from her mouth as she asked about his family. "I saw them earlier at the party. Was able to spend time with Cassie and Ely most of the night." His expression had softened considerably at this. Sev had missed them terribly, and there was no one hiding his letters to them so he had been fortunate enough to keep in touch that way, especially with Elyscia. Absently, he was running his thumb across her chin, just beneath her lip. "You should see your family, Sarra. Fuck that man. You deserve to spend time with them."

Sarra listened while he told her he’d already seen his sisters. She let out the breath she didn’t know she was holding in, and relaxed. She’d always hated the idea that Cassandra and Ely might hate her for being a part of getting Sevrin banished. A part of her had learned to not care what people thought about her in the five years she’d been away. She was a strong, independent woman, and everyone else could get over it. But when it came to Sev? And his family?
There was a part of her that sought their approval. “Good, that’s good!” She said nodding as she softly smiled up at him. “I’m glad you got to see them.” She said before his thumb running under her lip became too distracting. For a brief moment her eyes flickered down to Sev’s mouth, before a small smile spread across her face. It was almost a sad look as she reached up and placed her hand over his. Drawing her cobalt blues up to his bright blues. “I will, but not tonight. It’s late, and they’re all probably in bed. Tomorrow, when father’s still probably at the castle.” She said with a tiny grin. Her father was anything if not a creature of habit. He probably drank too much brandy and stayed so he didn’t have to take a carriage so late. If she was lucky, she could see her siblings and mother and be gone before her father was even home, and he’d be none the wiser.
“In the meantime…” She trailed off, pulling his hand away from her face so she could entwine their fingers. She rocked up on her tiptoes, and tilted her head up so their lips were a breath widths apart. “It’s cold.” A small smirk appeared on her face. “And I really don’t want to freeze my tits off.” She said in amusement as she rocked back onto her heels and turned towards the front of the alley. Tugging on Sevrin’s hand to gently pull him along, so they could catch up more at the inn and not have to worry about freezing out here in the snow.
For the first time in a long time Sarra was actually happy and it was thanks to that Yule night of happenstance when Sev walked back into her life so unexpectedly. Despite the cold bite of the air, she felt warm on the inside. She was even more confident with her footsteps and the way she held herself. Far different then she had five years ago. That Sarra was a bit shy, maybe even timid with how she held herself despite that need to be the good girl Daddy had wanted her to be.

It was likely he would see his sisters (and the rest of the family) a few more times before he left for whatever it was his cousin needed him for. Sevrin knew it wasn't going to keep him in Tresteria for long- even Aric wouldn't go against the council's ruling so easily, even if he might have the actual power to do so. He wouldn't want to stay here anyway, only desiring to come and go as he pleased. That just wasn't a clusterfuck he wanted to deal with, and it seemed like Triston was about to have his hands full with running for the regency. The last thing the mercenary wanted to do was mess up the man's chances.
He nodded. It was probably best that she didn't attempt to go home when that man was around. Granted, it would probably piss Haystone off, yet at the same time, Sev didn't like the idea of her being anywhere near her father right now. Unless he was there at her side, which he wasn't sure would send the right signals. In truth, he should seriously be walking away by now, giving her some excuse that he had to check in on something or go back to the ship.
'In the meantime...'
But he was easily distracted as she leaned in so close. Sevrin didn't move, but his eyes dropped to watch her lovely, smirking face, talking about how cold it was. I could remedy that, was his immediate thought, but he didn't voice it. He really, really shouldn't. Grinning lightly in return, he instead allowed Sarra to lead him out of that alleyway and in the direction of the inn. Fortunately, it wasn't terribly far, considering they were still so close to the docks. And while they walked, Sev just watched her, as if he was wondering whether this was still a dream or not, or if maybe he had been drinking all night and this was what his drunken mind wanted him to see.
So, when they stepped into the main room of the inn, the warmth washed over him and he remained quiet. Logically, he knew they should part ways, he knew he shouldn't make this difficult. They could stay on good terms and she wouldn't get mad at him for leaving again.
If that was what he was believing, then maybe he should stop staring at her.

The cold bit at her cheeks but she didn’t mind, as the inn was close. She could feel nerves slowly start to creep in with each step towards the inn and she contemplated what do to once they got there. There were certain things she wasn’t sure if she wanted Sev to see right away. If they did in fact pick up where they’d left off when they’d been so rudely interrupted by her father, that is… There would be questions, there would be anger, and she wasn’t sure she was ready to face them yet. She was just happy to see him and didn’t want anything to ruin that possible happiness. Even the scars on her body wouldn’t get in the way of it.
She knew she wasn’t ready to be rid of him. Not when she’d just found him again, after all this time. Maybe we can just talk… She thought to herself as they entered the inn. Warm air washing over her, she couldn’t help but shiver slightly as the cold fled her body. Her steps came to a stop in the middle of the main floor. It was late, and most of the candles had been put out save for the lone one on the clercs desk. By the looks of thing the clerk was away from the desk for the moment, and Sarra found herself turning to look at Sevrin. Catching him staring at her, and it made her breath catch for a brief moment before she canted her head slightly to the side.
She was silent, not saying anything, though she still held his hand. Staring up into his face, studying him quietly to try and figure out what was going on in that mind of his. The silence dragged on for a moment more before she gave him a look that read What do you want? as her hand slightly tightened in his, and she waited patiently for him to make his move.

This was a bad idea. Even if he could keep his hands to himself, this was not a good idea. Sevrin had heard her speak of traveling, making it clear that she hadn't been home in Tresteria this entire time. He could see as well as sense the change in her...but that didn't mean he was about to offer a ride on The Allotter. The life of a mercenary wasn't really a good one.
But would it be so terrible?
Before these thoughts could completely invade his mind and change it, they had stepped into the warmth of the inn to find it nearly empty. The clerk wasn't even behind the desk yet it didn't seem to much matter. He already had his room, he could very easily say his goodbyes and leave her side. Then, she was looking at him in silence, questioning him, and possibly testing his resolve.
Fuck.
When her hand tightened in his, he felt another couple of bricks cracking from the wall around his common sense. This was a bad idea, but Sevrin was just full of bad ideas, and would likely regret this later. Well, if she didn't just kill him later, that is.
Grinding his teeth, his grip on her hand tightened just a little bit more as he began to drag her towards the stairs; his free hand fishing for the key in his pocket. On that second level, it was just a couple doors to the right and struggled briefly with the bloody lock. Once opened, Sev was ushering Sarra instead, kicking that door closed behind him. He had a few more seconds to make the logical decision, but again...when did he really ever have logic?
Her hand still in his, he tugged her towards him and crashed his mouth down against hers; fingers filtering through her hair to secure her close. Oh, they could just talk, but she'd have to stop him first.

Cobalt blues proceeded to watch Sevrin as he made up his mind, and as his hand tightened in hers, she felt her heart begin to beat in anticipation as he started towards the stairs. Dragging her along with him. She didn't say anything, thought her mind was a loud as varying thoughts argued back and forth of what would be said or done once they were secure and finally alone without fear of prying eyes.
The anticipation started to make her feel like fireworks were going off under her skin with each step as they made it down to his room. Amusement alighted in her eyes as she found they'd walked past hers, and she wondered if not tonight, would they have crossed paths tomorrow? Her eyes watched Sevrin's tall, broad form attempt to put the key in the lock. A small smile appearing on her face before she was ushered in. Her steps were slow, almost hesitant, but she went in anyways. Knowing if she didn't spend whatever precious time she had with him she'd regret it later.
She let her eyes wander over the room, though it wasn't nothing impressive. It was a simple inn room that looked much like her own, but she felt her gut twist as the sound of the door closing. Her head turned to look back at Sevrin just as his hand tightened in hers and he tugged her towards him.
The moment her body connected with his, she melted like butter. Any previous thoughts of wondering what to do were muted the moment Sevrin claimed her lips with his, and her hands tightened into his shirt. That familiarity she had with him was coming back, as her body responded. It was familiar, and yet exciting at the same time as she'd nearly forgotten what kissing Sevrin was like. It had been so long, and yet it was almost as if it had been yesterday.
Her hands moved up to his shoulders, finding the clasp of his cloak, her fingers quickly undid it before pushing of his shoulders, and then she undid the ties of her own. The fabric pooled at the bottom of their feet, and she stepped forward, closing whatever space was between them, so their bodies were flush against each other, before she stood on her tiptoes and wrapped her arms around his neck. Her fingers delving into his blond strands at the base of his skull. For the moment, logic was out the window, and Sarra merely wanted to express how much she'd missed him.

Sarra wasn't talking. She wasn't telling him no. So, he wasn't stopping.
There was something intoxicatingly familiar to how she felt molded against him, and yet, there was also something a little different, if only because they both had changed so much in those last few years of being apart. It was causing a bit of confusion, if only because he knew he should slow down. However, as he felt her slender fingers curl into the front of his shirt, Sev knew it was going to be damn near impossible to unless she literally stopped him.
And again, she wasn't. Instead, she was shedding them of their cloaks as his fingers curled further into her hair, deepening their kiss just a little bit more, bordering on desperation. Now, that familiarity was hitting further, as though he had never left, as if her father never found out and they secreted away to somewhere safe to be with each other.
He wasn't the same Sevrin from five years- no, he was far from it. Although he had known how to handle a sword even then, the years within the Brotherhood had hardened him further, heavily calloused his hands. He'd always been lean and fit, but now his shoulders appeared more broad and he had a much more muscular physique with nearly every part of him riddled with scars, each with its own tale to tell. Oftentimes, those bright eyes appeared tired and angry...but right now they burned intensely for this woman in front of him; his arm wrapping around her waist to keep her close against him.
When his lips finally broke from her own, he began to trail warm kisses down the length of her neck before arriving at the curve of her bare shoulder. Ignoring the blouse for now, fingers blindly found their way to the laces of her corset to deftly undo them, like he had done so on numerous occasions. "I've missed you..." he murmured against her skin.
Oh, right, now he was saying it. You fuckin' idiot. She should probably punch him for that.

He was right, they were the same individuals from five years ago. They were both going to discover the new differences at some point, between the now and the next time they were parted. Sarra's skin was both kissed by the sun and had been marred by blades. Her face was evidence enough at the moment as well as her sun bleached hair, turning it an even brighter shade of blonde then it’s former golden honey.
She was thinner, certainly more fitter and her body had become toned from all her running around and adventuring. She’d shed the squishy skin of nobility and replaced it with the hardened one of a woman that knew of the worlds hardships.
If Sevrin managed to strip her bare he’d see just what sort of hardships she’d been through. Logic had flown out the window once he claimed her lips and she was teleported back in time, losing herself in the world of longing she’d lived in for the past five years. As he broke the kiss she panted slightly for air, titling her head back to grant him better access to her neck as she felt the coarseness of his beard against her skin with each kiss he planted.
She could feel the corset loosening and she leaned her head gently against Sev’s a soft groan made its way between her lips as she could feel her heart rate spiking and the temperature in the room rising. Already he was igniting things within her that had nearly forgotten what it was like to be touched by this man.
“I’ve missed you…” that soft murmur had reality hitting her, and Sarras hands went behind her back, taking over on the corset ties before it was loose enough she could easily move it down her hips and she kicked it off to the side. No longer retrained (as the thing would have had to come off anyway) Sarra took Sevrins hands in hers as she stood in front of him and she took a moment to watch him. She should have hit him. He should have said it sooner, but now they were in private and alone, with no one (at least that was planned) to walk in. “I’ve missed you, so, so much.” She murmured back with a small smile. She glanced down at their hands, placing a quick kiss to one of his knuckles before she pressed one of her cheeks against it as a way of comfort.
She took a long deep breath before she tilted her head back to look at him. A sad smile appearing on her face. “I want to Sev, I really do,” she started, glancing over at the bed so he got the hint to what she was referring to. “But I’m not ready to answer the questions you’re going to have. Not yet.” She said softly. And he would certainly have them. She was afraid of what he would say once he saw the scars, the “what happened” was what she really didn’t want to get into. It had left her in a beaten and broken place that was hard for to think about.
She quietly searched his face, gauging his reaction. “I’m sorry,” she said sadly, gingerly placing another kiss on one of his knuckles as her thumbs gently stroked his skin.

The taste of her skin, the gentle groan that left her lips was making it increasingly difficult to think or concentrate on anything else. And Sevrin knew better. This shouldn't have been immediately what happened between after so long, especially knowing he couldn't stay, that he knew he wouldn't want to bring her with him. Even if he took a moment to really dwell on it, Sev didn't know why he was still worried about letting her tag along.
Then suddenly, everything stopped.
Despite that corset hitting the floor, Sarra was gathering his hands into both her smaller ones and pausing him instantly. For a good moment, he was even waiting for her to slap him, for whatever reason this time. He'd been a fool, no doubt, he just didn't entirely understand his impulsiveness more than half the time. He shouldn't expect her to, either. With the kiss to his knuckles, he knew right then and there that he had to calm himself. She really didn't have to say anything more.
Still, those heavy-lidded eyes continued to watch her closely before the look in them changed. He would have questions? Questions about what, exactly? Now, his brow furrowed in slight confusion, his lips pursing as if to ask her right then and there, but he refrained for a moment.
"Don't be sorry," he told her, blinking away the remnants of that lustful trance. Again, he should have known better, but he never claimed to be a smart man in regards to this, or her. "But, uh...now you must know that I'm curious, and what I'm going to ask." Sarra couldn't elude to something and not expect him to want to understand.
